Method 1: Capture the current YouTube frame with a browser extension
- Install carefully. Open the current Chrome Web Store page for Screenshot YouTube, read the permissions and confirm that the extension still supports your browser version. - Open the video. Navigate to the YouTube video and wait until the player has loaded the quality you want. Expand the player if you need a larger view, but remember that an enlarged display cannot create detail that is absent from the source frame.
- Find the moment. Pause on the target image. Drag the timeline, use the frame-step controls available in the player, or move with the keyboard until motion blur and subtitles are where you want them. If the frame is soft, try a nearby frame rather than upscaling immediately.
- Use the extension’s capture control. The reviewed listing describes a button that saves the currently playing video image to a file, copies it to the clipboard, or performs both actions. - Open the local-video screenshot page. Choose the file picker and select the video. A browser permission prompt or file-access warning should be read before continuing.
- Scrub to the target time. Drag the timeline, play and pause, or step one frame at a time if the interface provides it. Pause only after the image is stable; fast movement can produce a blurred frame.
- Capture and choose a format. Export PNG when you need lossless text or diagrams, JPEG when a smaller photographic file is preferable, and WebP when your destination supports it and you want a compact modern format.

Fallback: use your operating system’s screenshot command
If an extension is unavailable, pause the video, switch the player to the largest practical view and use your operating system’s region screenshot. Select only the video rectangle, then crop out controls or overlays in an image editor. This is convenient but less exact: browser scaling, playback controls and notifications can become part of the pixels. Do not claim a quality advantage over the original video; the capture cannot exceed the detail rendered on your display.
How to get a sharp, useful frame
- Pause first, then capture. A moving timeline or subtitle animation can create an unintended intermediate frame.
- Prefer source quality over enlargement. Set the YouTube player to the highest quality available to you, but do not promise a particular maximum resolution; availability depends on the video and playback conditions.
- Check adjacent frames. A single frame may have a blink, motion blur or a subtitle transition. Compare the frame immediately before and after it.
- Keep text readable. For slides or demonstrations, PNG is usually safer than a heavily compressed JPEG. For photographic scenes, JPEG or WebP may reduce file size.
- Retain context. Save the video title, channel and timestamp with your image so another person can locate the source.
- Do not upscale as a rescue. Upscaling changes dimensions, not the underlying information. Use it only when your destination requires a larger canvas and you accept softer detail.
Copyright, permission and responsible reuse
YouTube explains that when someone creates an original work, such as a video, they usually automatically own its copyright. A screenshot reproduces part of that audiovisual work. Before posting it publicly, check the creator’s permission, the video’s license and the law where you are located.
YouTube identifies permission, Creative Commons licensing, public-domain material and legal exceptions such as fair use or fair dealing as possible routes for using copyrighted material. None guarantees that you will avoid a copyright strike or a Content ID claim, and the rules differ by country or region. Commentary, criticism, research, teaching and news reporting can raise different questions from using a frame as decoration, advertising or a thumbnail. Troubleshooting
The extension button is missing
Pin the extension in Chrome’s toolbar, reload the YouTube tab and confirm the extension is enabled for that site. If it still does not appear, check the current listing for compatibility, permissions and a changed interface rather than relying on an old shortcut.

Pause before controls fade, move the pointer away, wait for the video to finish rendering and capture again. A system screenshot may include overlays that a player-aware extension avoids.
The local tool will not open the video
Confirm that you selected a file rather than pasted a YouTube URL, that the browser supports the file’s codec and that the file is not still being copied from another drive. Try a browser-supported export of the video if you have permission to convert it.

Return to the original video, choose a higher available playback quality and test neighboring frames. Do not expect upscaling to recreate detail lost through low source resolution, compression or motion blur.
