Use a browser extension when you need to capture the page you are viewing and annotate or redact it. Use an API when screenshots must run repeatedly in monitoring, visual QA, previews, or other software.
Choose the right screenshot method

These methods are not interchangeable. A URL tool starts from an address, an extension works inside your browser session, and an API creates a repeatable request that your own code or scheduler can run.
Generate a screenshot with an online tool
- Open the service. Use a browser-based URL screenshot tool such as Site-Shot. Its online tool is described as free and requiring no registration or API key.
- Paste the complete URL. Include
https://where applicable. If the page is behind a login, regional restriction, or bot check, an anonymous public tool may not be able to render it. - Choose the capture area. Select visible-area for what fits in the viewport, or full-page/scrolling capture for content below the fold. Full-page is a separate mode; a normal viewport capture does not automatically include the whole document.
- Set the viewport. Pick a desktop, tablet, or mobile preset, or enter custom width and height. The viewport changes responsive breakpoints, navigation, typography, and the amount of content visible.
- Select the format. Choose PNG when lossless text and transparency matter, or JPEG when a smaller photographic file is acceptable, if those controls are offered.
- Run the capture and download. Wait for the rendered result, inspect the top, bottom, menus, images, and overlays, then save the file.
Capturing a whole, tall page
Select full-page explicitly and inspect the service’s height control. Site-Shot’s homepage documentation describes a maximum full-page height of 20,000 pixels. That is a Site-Shot limit, not a universal browser or industry limit; other services can impose different ceilings. Very long pages can also expose lazy-loaded images, sticky headers, repeated backgrounds, or sections that only appear after scrolling.
Capturing a mobile layout
Choose a phone preset when available, or enter a narrow custom width and a suitable height. Check the rendered navigation, font wrapping, cookie dialog, and horizontal overflow. A desktop screenshot resized after capture is not equivalent to rendering the page at a mobile viewport.

Dynamic pages and timing
Dashboards, single-page applications, animations, lazy images, and client-side content may need time before capture. Site-Shot’s API documentation says its real Chromium browser executes JavaScript and supports configurable delays and timeouts; that is the vendor’s description of its API, not independent validation that every site will render perfectly. If a page is incomplete, try a longer delay, wait for a visible state, or use a browser session where authentication is available.

Use a browser extension for capture and markup
- Install the extension from your browser’s official store and review its current permissions and privacy disclosure.
- Open the target page and wait until the state you want is visible.
- Choose full-page, visible-area, or custom-area capture.
- Use annotation or redaction tools if you need callouts or must remove sensitive information.
- Export PNG, JPG, or PDF according to the Chrome listing’s available options.
Extensions are convenient for pages that depend on your current browser cookies or login. Treat captures as potentially sensitive: account names, order numbers, internal URLs, and personal data can appear in the image or in extension processing.
Automate screenshots with an API
An API is the practical choice when a screenshot should run on a schedule, be generated for every link preview, or become part of visual regression and uptime workflows. A request normally supplies a URL and capture settings, then returns an image or a structured response. Site-Shot documents HTTP GET capture, full-page and emulation options, direct image output by default, and JSON/base64 output as an option. Its documentation also describes API access as subscription-based, so verify current plans and quotas before building around it.
What to specify in an automated request
- Canonical target URL and redirect policy.
- Viewport width and height or a device profile.
- Visible-area versus full-page mode and any maximum height.
- Delay or timeout for JavaScript, fonts, images, and API data.
- Output format and a deterministic filename or object key.
- Authentication, cookies, region, and user-agent requirements.
- Retries, logging, and a way to distinguish a failed load from a valid blank page.

Output, privacy, and reliability checks
- Verify dimensions. Record viewport and full-page height alongside each image so visual comparisons remain meaningful.
- Check state. A screenshot can be technically successful yet show a consent banner, login wall, loading spinner, or empty data state.
- Protect credentials. Do not place API keys in client-side JavaScript or public image URLs unless the provider’s signed-link feature is designed for that use.
- Control caching. Cached images improve speed but can hide a page update. Use a deliberate cache TTL or disable caching for validation runs.
- Handle failures explicitly. Retry transient network errors, but do not treat a repeated blank page or CAPTCHA as a valid capture.
Troubleshooting common failures
The result stops at the first screen
Full-page mode was not selected, or the service hit its height limit. Enable scrolling/full-page capture and check the provider’s documented maximum.

Images or text are missing
The page had not finished loading, content is lazy-loaded, or a request was blocked. Increase the wait, wait for a selector or network idle where supported, and test the public URL without extensions that block resources.
The mobile screenshot looks like desktop
The viewport remained at desktop dimensions. Select a mobile preset or set a narrow custom width before capturing; do not merely resize the finished image.
A login page or regional variant appears
The capture environment lacks your cookies, headers, location, or authorization. Use an extension in your authenticated browser, or choose an API that supports the required request context and complies with the site’s access rules.

A CAPTCHA, blank page, or timeout is returned
Automated access may be blocked, the page may require interaction, or the origin may be unavailable. Confirm the URL in a normal browser, then adjust timeout or interaction settings. Never present an error image as a successful page capture.

Use JPEG where lossless output is unnecessary, reduce viewport or device scale, capture a specific element, or resize after capture. For documentation, consider PDF only when pagination is more useful than one very tall image.

Can I screenshot a private webpage online?
Only if the capture method can access the required login, cookies, headers, or authorization. A public URL tool generally cannot use your private browser session.
Is full-page capture the same as a browser window screenshot?
No. A window or visible-area screenshot records the current viewport; full-page mode scrolls or renders the document to include content below it.
Which format should I choose?
