The exact mechanics depend on the authoring environment and output you need. A Word-based template can be used with a document-generation API, while a Google Docs template can be copied and updated through Google’s APIs. For batch work, an endpoint may accept an array of records and produce a document for each one. These are different integrations, not interchangeable formats or guarantees about page layout.
Choose a generation path
Decide first whether the finished file must remain editable or should be delivered as PDF, and whether you are generating one document or many. Then compare the available paths against your existing template, data format, authentication needs, and layout-control requirements.

Use the service documentation for the exact endpoint and integration you select. In particular, do not assume that accepted formats or output options for a service’s single-document endpoint also apply to its batch endpoint.
Build a template that can handle real content
Keep fixed text and layout in the document, and replace only the portions that change. Choose placeholders that are easy to distinguish from ordinary text, such as {{customer-name}}. Google’s merge guide describes using distinctive tags and replacing placeholder content while retaining intended text formatting. Adobe’s guide covers adding template tags to a Word document, including through an add-in.
Plan for optional and variable-length fields
Decide what should appear when a value is missing: omit the field, show a default, or include a label with an empty value. Apply that rule consistently to the data and template rather than leaving the result to chance.
Content length affects layout. A short address and a long address may take up different amounts of space; a description or table can expand enough to move later content onto another page. Design with realistic examples and make those boundary cases part of testing. The cited service documentation describes merge workflows, but it does not establish a universal page-break algorithm shared across renderers.
Prepare data that matches the template
For each placeholder, define the corresponding field and provide the intended value. Adobe documents preparing JSON data for a Word template. For batch generation, structure each record as a separate set of values for the same template. Generate one document or many
Single document
In Adobe’s documented flow, send the Word-based template and JSON data through its API or SDK to generate PDF or Word output. In Google’s workflow, copy the template and replace its placeholders using Docs API batchUpdate. The first route is a document-generation API workflow; the second is an application-controlled copy-and-update workflow. Batch documents
When many recipients share a layout, use a batch interface that explicitly supports multiple records. Check pagination before production
Page count and breaks depend on the template, content, and renderer. The cited documentation does not establish cross-tool guarantees for page breaks, repeated headers, or table flow. Validate the actual output produced by your chosen integration.
- Generate a typical record and inspect every page.
- Generate boundary cases: the longest names and descriptions, populated and empty optional fields, and tables with enough rows to cross a page.
- Check for clipped text, awkward blank areas, stranded headings, and unexpected page breaks.
- Verify repeating page elements such as headers and footers, along with images and final-page layout.
- Adjust the template or data rules, then render the samples again before scaling up.
For a batch, inspect more than the first output. A template that looks correct with one short record may behave differently with a record containing long text or many line items.

Placeholders remain in the output
Check that the template tag and data field match exactly, including punctuation and capitalization where the selected integration requires it. Confirm that the request uses the correct template copy and that the merge step runs against the intended document.
Some fields are blank or inconsistent
Compare the incoming record with the template’s expected fields. Inspect missing values, empty strings, and differences in field names or data shape. Define an explicit rule for optional content and apply it before generation.

Pages break differently between records
Variable-length values and table rows can change how much space content consumes. Test the longest expected fields and largest tables in the actual renderer, then revise the template and repeat the checks. Do not rely on a short sample as proof that all records will paginate identically.
