Both produce visible, editable Cypress code. Studio’s basic recorder does not require Cypress Cloud; cy.prompt and Studio’s AI suggestions do require a Cloud connection or the documented recorded-run setup. You still need to review selectors and assertions to ensure the test checks the behavior you intend.
Choose how you want to create the test
| Starting point | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cypress Studio | Records supported actions as you demonstrate a flow in the app, adding Cypress commands to a spec. | Recording requires internet access and sourcemaps. AI assertion suggestions require a linked Cloud project. |
cy.prompt |
Turns natural-language steps into commands, finds targets in the DOM, and executes the commands in sequence. | Requires Cypress Cloud connectivity or a recorded run with a valid key. |
| UI Coverage Test Generation | Drafts a test around an untested interactive element identified in a coverage report. | This is a targeted Cloud coverage workflow, not a general recorder for a first test. |
Cypress describes Studio and cy.prompt as minimal-code approaches: they reduce manual authoring but leave you with code you can read, edit, and commit. Cypress’s documentation says, “You always have full visibility into what the AI generated.”
Record an interaction with Cypress Studio
Set up and record the flow
- Open the project in Cypress App and start a test spec that visits the application page you want to exercise.
- Use Studio to open the application in the test runner and begin recording.
- Demonstrate the user journey. The Studio guide lists click, type, check, uncheck, and select as supported recorded actions.
- Watch the spec as Cypress translates the actions into commands. Edit the generated code inline where needed.
- Add assertions for the outcomes that matter. Studio recording itself does not decide whether an observed outcome is the intended business rule.
The non-AI recorder can be used without Cypress Cloud. Studio requires internet access and sourcemaps so it can load test code accurately.
Selectors and optional AI assertions
Studio selects targets using a priority strategy: data-cy, data-test, data-testid, data-qa, name, id, class, tag, other attributes, and finally nth-child. You can customize priorities with Cypress.ElementSelector. This strategy does not guarantee durable selectors; application changes and local conventions still matter.
Studio AI can recommend assertions based on UI changes such as visibility, text, form values, attributes, and URL changes. Cypress says Studio AI does not access application source code, business logic, or backend rules. To use the AI recommendations, connect a Cypress Cloud account and link the project. Cypress documentation states that a user may accept up to six recommendations in a browser session before being asked to log in and link a project; confirm current availability and limits in Cypress’s official documentation.
Generate commands from a natural-language flow with cy.prompt
Describe steps and inspect generated code
Write the intended journey as an array of natural-language steps in a Cypress test. For example, the steps might tell Cypress to visit a page, search for an item, open a named result, and verify the cart. Cypress interprets each step, evaluates the DOM to choose targets, generates commands, and executes them in sequence. The Command Log’s Code control exposes the generated commands. Use the exact syntax and setup in the current Cypress cy.prompt guide; feature setup and availability can change.
To use cy.prompt, log in to Cypress Cloud or run with --record and a valid key, as Cypress documents. Cypress has described the feature as available on every Cloud plan, including the free Starter plan, with paid plans increasing execution allowance and hourly limits. Check the current plan details before relying on those limits.
Choose exported code or an active prompt
- Generate once and commit: inspect the commands, save them in the spec, and commit the code. Cypress presents this as a predictable, version-controlled option; once exported, the test can run without calling the AI service.
- Keep the prompt active: leave
cy.promptin the test so Cypress can regenerate selectors if cached commands stop working. Cypress describes this as self-healing. It can help with selector maintenance, but it does not validate whether a changed interface still satisfies your business requirements.
Cypress says generated code is cached and shared across machines and environments, including CI. The AI is called again when a prompt or relevant DOM change invalidates cached code. This is documented product behavior, not an independent performance measurement.

Review the test before trusting it
- Confirm each selected element is the one a user should interact with, especially where labels or repeated controls are ambiguous.
- Check that assertions test a meaningful result rather than merely confirming that an element appeared.
- Review how sensitive values are entered or stored; generated steps do not remove your responsibility to handle secrets safely.
- Align selectors, fixtures, and test organization with the project’s conventions.
- Rerun after relevant application changes and investigate failures instead of automatically accepting a regenerated selector or assertion.
Neither Studio nor cy.prompt eliminates QA judgment. The code-generation features help create a starting point; they cannot infer every application-specific rule from a user journey.
Use UI Coverage when you have a specific gap
If a Cypress Cloud UI Coverage report identifies an interactive element without test coverage, its AI test-generation workflow can draft a test for that element and follow patterns in existing specs. This is useful when the goal is to address an identified coverage gap. It depends on coverage information and is not the general-purpose first step for generating any test.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Cypress test generator. If your immediate task is capturing a page rather than authoring an end-to-end test, one GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Best Value
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Cypress Studio without Cypress Cloud?
Yes. Studio’s interaction recorder works without Cloud; Cloud is required for Studio AI recommendations.
Does generated Cypress code have to stay connected to AI?
No. After exporting and committing generated commands from cy.prompt, Cypress says the test can run without calling the AI service.
Does ScreenshotNeo generate Cypress tests?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures webpages as images or PDFs; it is not a Cypress test-generation tool.
