What counts as an App Store screenshot?
An App Store screenshot is a still image that communicates what using your app looks like. You can capture the app UI directly from a running app, or create a composed image that presents the real interface with supporting text or design elements. Either way, the result should accurately represent the app; do not present a feature or screen that users cannot access.
Apple documents using Xcode to capture screenshots for App Store submission, and App Store Connect provides the upload workflow. Apple describes screenshots and app previews as a way to visually communicate the app’s user experience. See Apple’s screenshot specifications and upload instructions.
A screenshot is not an app preview. Screenshots are still images; app previews are optional videos with separate format and duration limits. Do not prepare a video when the screenshot set asks for images.

Choose a capture workflow
Capture the running app
Use Xcode or a device capture workflow when you need authentic screens from the current build. This is useful for documenting the interface precisely and avoiding discrepancies between marketing material and the shipped app. Apple’s documentation covers capturing screenshots with Xcode for App Store submission: Capturing screenshots and videos from your app.
Plan the app state before capture: use representative data, navigate to the intended screen, and ensure the UI is fully loaded. Capture the screens you want users to understand, then inspect each file before export. The precise Xcode controls and simulator/device options can change by Xcode version, so use the workflow documented for the version you have installed.
Compose presentation images
A designed screenshot can place an app screen inside a device frame or pair it with a short headline. This is a composition workflow, not a substitute for a valid app screen. Keep important UI legible at the final dimensions, avoid covering interface details with text, and ensure each claim and visual corresponds to the actual app. Export the final flattened image as JPEG or PNG with no transparency.
Choose between direct capture and composition based on the story you need to tell: direct captures prioritize fidelity; composed images can add context but require careful review for readability and accuracy. Apple’s reviewed specifications do not establish a ranking of third-party design tools, so use the image workflow that fits your team rather than assuming a particular generator is required.

Find the correct dimensions before exporting
Dimensions depend on the supported Apple platform, device display class, and image orientation. First inventory whether your app runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, or Apple Watch. Then consult Apple’s current screenshot table for every applicable screenshot group. The examples below are from the current Apple reference and are not permanent or universal sizes.
| Platform or display group | Example dimensions accepted in Apple’s current reference | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone, 6.9-inch class | 1260 × 2736 px portrait or 2736 × 1260 px landscape | For the listed models in that display group; other iPhone groups have their own dimensions. |
| iPad, 13-inch class | 2064 × 2752 px or 2048 × 2732 px portrait, with corresponding landscape dimensions | Apple marks 13-inch iPad screenshots required when the app runs on iPad. |
| Mac | 1280 × 800, 1440 × 900, 2560 × 1600, or 2880 × 1800 px | All listed options are 16:10. |
| Apple TV | 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160 px | Check the live table for the applicable asset group. |
| Apple Vision Pro | 3840 × 2160 px | Confirm the current platform requirements before export. |
| Apple Watch | Varies by watch model | Apple requires the same screenshot size consistently across localizations for the app. |
See Apple’s current screenshot specifications for the complete model mapping, orientations, and required groups. Device requirements evolve: Apple release notes have added screenshot specifications for newer iPhone and Apple Watch models. Confirm the live table immediately before preparing a release rather than reusing dimensions from an old template.
Shared assets or device-specific assets
If the interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, Apple can scale screenshots down when you supply the highest required resolution. Alternatively, use Media Manager to provide size-specific and locale-specific screenshots. A shared set reduces asset work, while custom sets let you show screens and copy tailored to each locale or device size. The correct choice depends on whether the smaller presentation remains clear and accurate.
Prepare files that App Store Connect accepts
- Use
.jpeg,.jpg, or.png. - Provide 1–10 screenshots in each applicable screenshot set.
- Remove alpha channels and transparency; screenshots cannot contain them.
- Match each file to the platform, device class, and orientation required by Apple’s live table.
- Review legibility at the final exported size, especially if one high-resolution image will be scaled down.
Apple’s screenshot rules and platform-specific dimensions are listed in its specification reference. Do not assume a file is valid merely because its pixel dimensions look close: orientation, display group, format, and transparency all matter.

Upload screenshots in App Store Connect
- Open the app record and version. In App Store Connect, select the app, then open the platform/version whose product page you are preparing.
- Choose the screenshot set. Select the relevant platform and, where applicable, iPhone or iPad. Select the locale you are editing.
- Upload the files. Drag the correctly sized images into the corresponding screenshot well. Follow Apple’s current upload instructions at Upload app previews and screenshots.
- Add custom variants if needed. Use Media Manager to upload device-size-specific or localized variants instead of relying on scaling where the UI or presentation differs.
- Check processing and required wells. Confirm the images appear in the intended locale and device group. Resolve missing required groups or processing issues before submitting.
Apple documents screenshot uploads for app records in supported states including Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected, and Developer Rejected. If the app is already submitted and approved, Apple says you must create a new version to update its screenshots.
Automate uploads with the App Store Connect API
For a release pipeline or a large set of localized assets, the App Store Connect API can automate screenshot upload. Apple describes the asset flow as four stages: reserve the asset, upload its bytes (potentially in parts), commit the upload, and verify processing. This is not simply a single file POST; your automation needs to handle the API’s asset metadata, upload instructions, commit, and status check.
- Reserve an asset. Create the screenshot asset in the appropriate app version localization and screenshot display type.
- Upload the file. Send the file to the upload operation or operations returned for the reservation. Large assets may be split into parts according to the API response.
- Commit. Tell App Store Connect the upload is complete.
- Verify processing. Check the asset’s processing state and resolve any validation failure before considering the upload successful.
Use Apple’s asset upload documentation and the API reference for the current request schemas and authorization requirements. The API is useful when repeatability matters, but the web interface may be simpler for a small release. Do not mark a release complete merely because bytes were transferred; verify processing and that the screenshot landed in the intended version, device group, and locale.
App previews are optional videos, not screenshots
If you also want a video, prepare it as an app preview and follow Apple’s separate requirements. Apple’s current specifications list a 15-second minimum, 30-second maximum, 500 MB maximum file size, and accepted .mov, .m4v, or .mp4 extensions for H.264; ProRes 422 HQ is also listed in .mov. Apple allows up to three app previews per supported device size and language. These are video-specific limits, not still-image rules. See Apple’s app preview specifications.

Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
App Store Connect rejects the dimensions
Likely cause: the image targets the wrong display group, orientation, platform, or a superseded device size. Fix: identify the app’s supported platform and device group, compare exact pixel dimensions against Apple’s live table, and export again. Do not resize to a guessed “standard” iPhone size.
A screenshot is missing from a required set
Likely cause: a required platform or display group was not populated, or the asset was added under the wrong platform, version, or locale. Fix: revisit the screenshot wells for each supported platform and the required iPad group if the app runs on iPad; verify the selected locale and version.
The file fails because of transparency
Likely cause: a PNG export retained an alpha channel even if the transparent area looks white in an editor. Fix: flatten the image against an opaque background and export again as JPEG or PNG without alpha.
The screenshot looks blurry or text is too small
Likely cause: the asset was enlarged from a smaller capture or a single high-resolution screenshot was scaled down for a smaller presentation. Fix: capture or compose at the required output resolution, then inspect a scaled preview. If the same image does not remain clear across sizes, provide custom assets via Media Manager.

You need to change screenshots after approval
Cause: screenshots belong to the submitted app version’s product-page metadata. Fix: create a new app version, then make the screenshot change in that version, as described in Apple’s upload guidance.
An API upload transferred but the asset is not ready
Likely cause: the upload was not committed, processing is incomplete, or validation failed. Fix: follow the reserve-upload-commit-verify sequence in Apple’s asset upload documentation; inspect the processing status and error before retrying.

For a screenshot of a live web page used in your app workflow or documentation, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an App Store Connect uploader: you still need to prepare assets at Apple’s required dimensions and upload them to the correct product-page set. Before capture, it can accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents.
Install the API key as an environment secret in your own workflow, then run this cURL example (replace the target URL with the page you need):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
