Generate a Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT) with The Forest’s Steam App ID, 242760, then paste the token into your host’s Server Token or Steam Game Server Account field. For a self-hosted installation, put it in server.cfg as serverSteamAccount. Save the change and restart the server.

A valid token identifies the server to Steam. Without one, The Forest can appear as an anonymous server, which may reduce browser visibility and can cause player-inventory saving problems according to hosting guidance.

A GSLT is a Steam Game Server Login Token associated with your Steam account and a specific game App ID. It gives Steam a persistent identity for your dedicated server instead of leaving the server anonymous.
For The Forest, the App ID used when creating the token is 242760. This is the game’s App ID for GSLT creation; do not substitute an App ID for a dedicated-server tool or another related application.

The token is not your Steam password, account name, or normal game CD key. Treat it as a server credential: copy it exactly, keep it out of public logs and screenshots, and revoke or replace it if you believe it has been exposed.
Check your Steam account before generating a token
Steam applies account-level requirements to Game Server Login Tokens. Current hosting guidance lists these conditions:
- Your Steam account must own The Forest.
- The account must not be banned or otherwise blocked from Steam services.
- The account must not be limited.
- The account must have a qualifying registered phone number.
- You must remain below the stated limit of 1,000 GSLT keys on the account.
If token creation is rejected, check these requirements before changing the server configuration. A token generated by an account that does not own The Forest may not authenticate the server correctly, even if the token itself can be copied into a configuration field.
Generate a GSLT for The Forest
- Sign in to Steam. Use the Steam account that owns The Forest and meets the eligibility requirements above.
- Open Steam’s Game Server Account Management page. This is the Steam page used to create and manage server login tokens, not the regular game library or community profile.
- Enter the App ID. In the App ID field, type
242760. - Add an identifying memo if useful. A memo such as “The Forest home server” or “The Forest production instance” helps you identify the token later when one account manages several servers. The memo does not replace the App ID or token.
- Click Create. Steam displays a Login Token after the account and App ID are accepted.
- Copy the Login Token immediately. Copy only the token value. Do not add quotation marks, spaces, labels, or punctuation when you paste it into the server configuration.
The value Steam calls a Login Token is the GSLT key that hosting panels commonly request. Keep the memo and the server name documented somewhere private so you can tell which token belongs to which instance.

Add the token in a managed hosting panel
Provider control panels use different labels for the same setting. Look for Server Token, Steam Game Server Account, or STEAM ACCOUNT TOKEN. These labels all refer to the GSLT input described above.
- Stop the server. Use the panel’s Stop button and wait until the status shows that the process has exited. Editing a live configuration can be overwritten when the service stops or restarts.
- Open the game configuration. Depending on the panel, this may be under Configuration, Startup, Files, or a The Forest settings page.
- Find the token field. Select the field named Server Token, Steam Game Server Account, or STEAM ACCOUNT TOKEN.
- Paste the Login Token. Paste the complete value with no leading or trailing spaces. Do not paste the App ID in this field; the App ID was used only on Steam’s token-generation page.
- Save the configuration. Wait for the panel to confirm that the setting was written before leaving the page.
- Start or restart the server. The process must launch again to read the new credential. A token entered while the old process is still running has no effect on that process.
Panels change their layout over time. A hosting guide may show an older control panel, so the location and wording of the field can differ while the required value remains the same.
Configure a self-hosted server with server.cfg
On a server you operate yourself, the official Steam tutorial documents the server.cfg configuration file and the serverSteamAccount setting. The essential entry is:
serverSteamAccount YOUR_GSLT_LOGIN_TOKENReplace YOUR_GSLT_LOGIN_TOKEN with the exact Login Token generated for App ID 242760. Do not include explanatory text, angle brackets, or quotation marks unless your existing configuration format specifically requires them.

Safe editing sequence
- Stop the dedicated-server process. Close it cleanly so the configuration is not being read or rewritten while you edit.
- Locate the active
server.cfg. Edit the file used by the launch profile that starts your The Forest server, not an unused backup or template. - Add or update
serverSteamAccount. Keep one active definition of the setting. If an old token is present, replace it rather than leaving conflicting entries. - Save the file as plain text. Avoid smart quotes or hidden characters introduced by rich-text editors.
- Launch the server again. Confirm that the startup command is using the same configuration file you edited.
Headless launch options
For a machine without a graphical desktop, DustBowl documents the headless Unity launch flags:
-batchmode -nographics -nosteamclientThese flags control how the server process runs without a graphical Steam client; they do not replace the GSLT. The token still belongs in server.cfg as serverSteamAccount.
Confirm that Steam accepted the token
After the restart, allow the server process to finish loading before testing. Use the following checks in order:
- Check the startup log. Look for the server reaching its normal listening or ready state without a configuration parse error.
- Check the server browser. Search from a client outside the host machine’s local network when possible. A server that was previously anonymous should have a better chance of appearing with its Steam identity.
- Join with a test account. Confirm that the server is reachable and that a small inventory change persists after leaving and rejoining. Inventory behavior can depend on the wider server setup, so this test verifies your instance rather than guaranteeing a result for every configuration.
- Check the active configuration again. If the panel has separate startup and advanced settings, verify that the saved token appears in the setting actually consumed by the launch profile.
Do not assume that a successful paste means the token is active. The running process must have loaded the saved value, which is why stopping and restarting is part of the procedure.

Troubleshoot a server that remains anonymous or missing
The server is not listed in the Internet browser
First verify the fundamentals:
- The token was created with App ID
242760. - The Steam account that created it owns The Forest.
- The complete token was pasted with no extra characters.
- The server was fully restarted after the change.
- The server is using the configuration file you edited.
If all five checks pass, review the server’s networking configuration and the common dedicated-server ports documented for your installation. A GSLT identifies the server to Steam; it does not automatically repair blocked firewall rules, incorrect port forwarding, or an unreachable host.

The panel has no field named “GSLT”
Search for equivalent labels: Server Token, Steam Game Server Account, or STEAM ACCOUNT TOKEN. Provider terminology varies, but these fields are intended for the same Steam Login Token.
Steam rejects token creation
Recheck account eligibility: ownership of The Forest, an unblocked and non-limited account, a qualifying registered phone, and the account’s GSLT count. Shockbyte’s current guidance states a maximum of 1,000 GSLT keys. If your account has accumulated old tokens, remove unused entries where Steam permits and try again.
The server still reports an anonymous identity after a restart
Confirm that you did not paste the App ID, memo, or a quotation-marked value into the token field. On self-hosted systems, verify the spelling and capitalization of serverSteamAccount, remove duplicate entries, and make sure the launch script points to the edited server.cfg. On hosted systems, stop the server before editing, save the panel configuration, and start it again rather than relying on an in-place reload.
The token was exposed publicly
Consider it compromised. Remove or revoke the exposed token through Steam’s Game Server Account management page, create a replacement for App ID 242760, update the panel or server.cfg, and restart the server. Do not post the replacement in support screenshots or public issue reports.

Both approaches use the same Steam token. The difference is who operates the machine, files, network, and restart process.

Choose managed hosting when you want a simpler panel-based workflow and do not need direct control of the operating system. Choose self-hosting when you need control over files, launch flags, networking, and maintenance and are prepared to operate those components yourself.
Token maintenance and operational checklist
- Record which Steam account created each token and which server uses it.
- Use a descriptive memo when creating more than one token.
- Store the token in a password manager or another restricted location.
- Never include the token in a public configuration repository, screenshot, or chat message.
- After changing the token, stop, save, and restart rather than assuming a live reload occurred.
- When migrating hosts, copy the token only to the new private configuration and verify the new instance after startup.
- If you no longer use a server, remove or revoke its token so your account’s key list stays manageable.

The complete workflow is therefore: verify the Steam account, create a token for App ID 242760, place the Login Token in the provider field or serverSteamAccount, save the configuration, and restart. If browser visibility does not improve, troubleshoot the account, exact token text, active configuration file, restart state, and network reachability separately.
