Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTurn an existing photo or illustration into an Open Graph (OG) share image by fitting it to a 1200 × 630-pixel canvas, choosing a crop or padded layout that preserves the subject, adding any short headline or branding, then publishing the image at a public HTTPS URL and referencing it in your page’s <head> with og:image. That size is a practical cross-platform baseline, not a universal protocol requirement. The Open Graph project describes its protocol as enabling a web page to become a rich object in a social graph (official specification).
What you need to make an OG image
An OG image is the preview image associated with a shared page URL. The page identifies it with the og:image metadata property. The image is not automatically the same as a page’s lead photo: you can crop, pad, or compose an existing asset specifically for a social preview.
- Source image: confirm its dimensions, orientation, focal point, contrast, and that you have permission to use it.
- Canvas: 1200 × 630 pixels (about 1.91:1) is a useful starting point. Cloudinary uses that as a generator default, but it is a convention rather than a size mandated for every platform (Cloudinary Open Graph image generator).
- Layout: choose a crop if the subject can fill the frame, or padding/a split layout if cropping would cut off important content.
- Published asset: make the final image publicly accessible at an absolute HTTPS URL.
- Metadata: add the image URL and descriptive properties to the page’s HTML head.
Prepare the existing image and choose its layout
Inspect the source before editing
Check the source pixel dimensions and where the subject sits in the frame. Faces, product edges, diagrams, and logos should not end up against the edge where a crop could clip them. If the original is smaller than the target canvas, avoid enlarging it aggressively: softness and compression artifacts become more noticeable. A solid or branded background with padding can look cleaner than a low-resolution image stretched to fill the card.
Crop or pad to fit 1200 × 630
For a wide landscape image, use a cover crop and set the focal point deliberately. A centered crop is not always right: move the crop window to keep the subject visible and leave a quieter area for text. Cloudinary’s generator supports smart cropping and JPG, PNG, and WebP source images (Cloudinary generator).

For a portrait or square image, consider placing it on a background with generous margins or using a split layout with a text panel. This keeps the whole subject while creating a predictable place for a title. If the image is a diagram or contains embedded text, prefer padding over a crop that removes context.
Add a short, legible overlay
Use one concise headline, sized to remain readable when the card appears as a small preview. For a busy photograph, add a translucent scrim or contrasting panel behind the text rather than relying on a subtle text shadow. A logo or site name can help identify the publisher, but should not obscure the main subject. Check the image at thumbnail size before exporting.
Export and publish the finished image
Export a web-ready file and host it at a stable, publicly accessible HTTPS address. JPG is a practical choice when broad compatibility and smaller files are priorities; PNG can preserve crisp graphic text or transparency. WebP may reduce file size where the consuming crawler accepts it. Cloudinary’s Next.js documentation identifies JPG as its compatibility-oriented default (Cloudinary Next.js OG image documentation).

Use a descriptive path, for example /og/how-to-generate-og-image.jpg. Do not assume an image URL that works only after a user signs in or after client-side JavaScript runs will work for a social crawler. Open the final URL directly in a browser to confirm it returns the image. No single authoritative byte-size limit applies to every crawler and platform, so keep the file reasonably optimized without treating one unverified number as universal.

Add Open Graph metadata to the page
Put the metadata in the document’s <head>. Replace the example domain, page URL, image path, and text with values for the page being shared. The image MIME type and dimensions must describe the actual exported asset.
<head prefix="og: https://ogp.me/ns#">
<meta property="og:title" content="How to Generate an Open Graph Image from an Existing Image">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">

<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A finished social preview image made from an existing photograph">
<meta property="og:description" content="A practical workflow for turning an existing image into an Open Graph share card.">
</head>
The protocol defines og:image and its structured properties, including og:image:url, og:image:secure_url, og:image:type, og:image:width, og:image:height, and og:image:alt (Open Graph protocol). The alt value should describe the image; it is not a caption. Use the secure URL value when appropriate, and ensure it points to the same image as og:image.

Declare multiple OG images in the right order
If you declare more than one image, put the preferred fallback first. Place its structured properties immediately after its root og:image tag, before beginning the next image’s properties. The Open Graph specification says the first image is preferred and that structured properties belong to the preceding root image (specification).

Choose manual editing or automated generation
| Approach | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual image editor or browser generator | A few pages, one-off campaigns, or designs needing hands-on art direction. | Fast to begin, but each card needs manual updates and consistent positioning takes care. |
| Template-based build or API generation | Many pages or records where cards need page-specific titles, images, or branding. | Repeatable and personalizable, but requires template and publishing setup. |
Cloudinary’s generator lets you upload an image, set title, subtitle, or brand text, smart-crop, and download a card (generator). For repeated generation, Cloudinary documents image transformations and a Next.js getCldOgImageUrl helper for metadata workflows (Next.js documentation). The right choice depends on production volume, how consistent the design must be, whether each page needs personalized content, and how much control you want over hosting and caching.

Verify the image and metadata before sharing
- Open the image URL directly. Confirm it is absolute, public, HTTPS, and loads without a login or special browser state.
- Check the exported pixel dimensions and confirm the subject and headline still read at thumbnail size.
- Inspect the rendered HTML source or server-rendered output. Confirm the OG tags are inside
<head>, not only added by a client-side preview. - Verify that width, height, MIME type, and alt text all describe the same image URL.
- After replacing an image, consider using a new filename to avoid stale cached copies, then check again after the sharing crawler refreshes its cached preview.
Troubleshoot when the OG image does not appear
The image URL works for you but not for the sharing crawler
Check that it is a public absolute HTTPS URL and does not require cookies, authentication, or a browser-only redirect. Open the URL in a private browser window and inspect whether it resolves to the image itself.
Rank #4
The wrong image appears
Inspect the final HTML for duplicate og:image tags. The first declared image is the preferred one, so move the intended preview to the first position and keep its structured properties next to it. If an old preview persists after updating the asset, publish under a new filename and allow the target platform’s crawler cache to refresh.
The preview is cropped badly or text is unreadable
Revisit the source crop and focal point. Keep important content away from the boundaries, use padding for portrait or square images, and increase contrast behind overlay text. Judge the result at thumbnail size rather than only in the full-resolution editor.
The metadata appears missing
Check the delivered page HTML, not just what a client-side development tool displays. Confirm the tags are in <head> and that og:image contains the complete HTTPS URL. Then inspect the image’s actual MIME type and dimensions against the structured values.
