Firefox Desktop can generate one locally as well.
Before you share or print it, verify the address, scan-test the finished image with a phone, and decide whether a fixed (static) link is sufficient or whether you genuinely need a managed (dynamic) redirect.
The quickest way: use your browser’s built-in generator
No special QR hardware, phone app, or paid service is required for the basic job. The browser turns the URL of the page currently open into an image that another device can scan.

Generate a QR code in Google Chrome
- Open the exact webpage you want people to visit.
- Check the address bar. Confirm the spelling, domain, path, and
https://scheme before creating anything. - Select More (the three-dot menu), then Cast, save, and share, and finally Create QR code.
- In the QR panel, choose whether to copy the QR link, download the image, or scan it with another device.
- Open the downloaded image or the printed proof with a phone camera and confirm that it reaches the intended page.
Chrome encodes the URL for the page that is open at the moment you create the code. If you later navigate to a different page, the already-downloaded image does not change.

If Chrome’s command is missing
- Make sure you are using Chrome on a computer rather than a managed or heavily customized build that hides sharing commands.
- Reload the target page and open the three-dot menu again.
- Use the page’s address-bar share controls if your Chrome release presents the QR command there instead of under Cast, save, and share.
- If the page is blocked by a sign-in wall, make sure you are signed in before generating and test the code from a device that has the required access.
Generate a QR code in Microsoft Edge
- Open the page whose address you want to encode.
- Verify the complete URL in the address bar.
- Right-click an empty area of the webpage, away from links, images, form fields, and selected text.
- Select Create QR code for this page.
- Share the link or download the QR image as a PNG.
- Scan the downloaded PNG before distributing it.
Microsoft describes this as a built-in Edge feature. Its policy entry lists QR-code-generator support for Windows 125+, macOS 125+, and Android 140+, while iOS is marked unsupported in that entry. That is a policy listing, not a guarantee that every device, market, or deployment exposes the command; update Edge or use another supported browser if the menu is absent.
Generate one in Firefox Desktop
- Open the intended webpage and inspect its address.
- Open Firefox’s page actions or sharing controls and choose its QR-code option.
- Save or share the generated image.
- Scan-test the saved file on a phone.
Mozilla states that Firefox creates the QR code locally on the computer and does not upload or store the webpage URL during generation. That is useful when the URL must remain in the browser while the image is being made.
Check the URL before you create the image
A QR code faithfully carries whatever address you give it, including a typo, an unexpected tracking path, or a malicious redirect. Aalto University’s guidance recommends checking and correcting the link before creating the code.
- Confirm the destination: follow the link yourself and make sure it is the page you intend to publish.
- Check HTTPS: use the secure scheme when the site supports it.
- Inspect access requirements: a private, expired, or region-restricted page may work for you but fail for recipients.
- Watch for URL changes: a campaign page, product path, or event registration address may be replaced later.
- Scan from the final artifact: test the actual PNG, PDF proof, or printed piece, not just the browser preview.
Static versus dynamic QR codes
A browser-generated code is normally static: the destination URL is encoded directly in the image. Once the image is printed or distributed, changing the website address requires creating and distributing a new image.
A dynamic QR service encodes a hosted redirect or identifier instead. You can often change the final destination after printing and may receive scan measurements, but every scan depends on that service remaining available and trustworthy. Aalto University warns that dynamic codes can be redirected to a malicious website, so the redirect domain and final destination need review.

For a dynamic code, verify the short or redirect domain before publication and scan it on more than one network. Do not assume that an editable destination is automatically safer or permanent.
Download, share, and print the QR image safely
- Save the original export: keep the downloaded PNG in its original form so you can retest it later.
- Do not crop into the corner markers: the scanner needs the complete code and its clear surrounding margin.
- Preserve contrast: use a dark code on a light, uncluttered background and avoid placing graphics over the modules.
- Test at the intended distance: a code that scans on a large monitor may fail on a small label or a dim poster.
- Proof the physical item: scan a photograph or physical proof after printing, folding, laminating, or placing it behind glass.
There is no universal minimum physical size established here because readability depends on the encoded URL, printer, contrast, viewing distance, and scanner. Start with a generous size, then validate the actual use case rather than relying on a nominal measurement.
Troubleshooting common failures
The QR command is not visible
Use the browser and platform combinations documented above, update the browser, and try the page menu again. In Edge, right-click a genuinely blank area; right-clicking an image or link opens a different context menu. Enterprise policies, regional rollouts, and browser versions can also change availability.

Return to the original page, copy the address from the address bar, and compare it character by character with the intended destination. Generate a new image after correcting the URL. A static image cannot be repaired after distribution.
The code will not scan from a printout
Check that the image was not compressed, blurred, clipped, covered by a logo, or printed with insufficient contrast. Re-export the original PNG, leave clear space around the code, enlarge it for the target distance, and scan the physical proof under normal lighting.

The code works for you but not for other people
Test while signed out, on cellular data, and on a different device. The page may require an account, depend on an internal network, block a region, or have expired. Replace it with a publicly reachable HTTPS page or explain the access requirement next to the code.
A dynamic QR redirect has stopped working
Check the provider account, redirect domain, subscription status, and destination URL. If the service is unavailable, a static code made for the final URL is the only way to remove that dependency for future materials.

For most one-off links, the browser-generated static image is the simplest and least dependent choice. Whichever route you take, the final scan test is the step that catches mistakes before your audience does.

Can I make a QR code without installing an app?
Yes. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox Desktop can generate one from the webpage you already have open; download the image and scan-test it before sharing.
Does a browser-generated QR code expire?
The image itself does not have an expiration date. It will work as long as the encoded URL remains reachable and its access requirements have not changed.
Can I change the destination after printing a static QR code?
No. A static code contains the original URL. Changing the destination requires a new image, unless you used a managed redirect from a dynamic QR service.
