The sequence is straightforward; the legal and practical details are not uniform across Africa. First confirm that the broker accepts residents of your country, then obtain a fresh deposit instruction, ask your bank whether investment-related transfers are permitted, compare the complete foreign-exchange and wire cost, and retain proof of payment.
Your country’s foreign-exchange rules, tax obligations, permitted currencies, bank forms, limits and reporting requirements control what is possible. The South African examples below illustrate one jurisdiction and one bank workflow; they do not establish rules for Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco or any other country.

What you need before sending money
Prepare these items before opening your bank’s international-payment screen:
- A brokerage account that is approved for residents of your country and has passed any required identity or tax checks.
- The broker’s current wire instructions for the exact currency you plan to send.
- A bank account held in the same legal name as the brokerage account, unless the broker has explicitly approved another arrangement.
- Your bank’s requirements for outbound investment payments, including purpose code, supporting documents, permitted currencies and transaction limits.
- A way to record the payment reference, bank confirmation and broker deposit notification.
Do not rely on a routing number copied from an old article, a social-media post or another customer’s account. Banks and brokers can use different receiving accounts for different currencies, and an instruction that was correct for one customer or date may be wrong for yours.

Step 1: Confirm the broker and route are available to you
Check country-of-residence eligibility
Broker availability is country-specific. Sign in to the broker’s official account-opening or support area and confirm that it accepts customers resident in your country. Also check whether it accepts the currency you can legally remit and whether it supports funding by bank wire from your jurisdiction. The evidence available for this guide does not provide a complete eligibility list for African countries, so a forum post or a successful transfer by someone in another country is not proof that your account will qualify.
Check the account holder and sender names
Use a sending account that matches the brokerage customer’s legal name. Interactive Brokers (IBKR), for example, states: “Third-Party Deposits – Interactive Brokers strongly discourages and, generally, rejects third-party deposits, which have historically been viewed by the financial services industry and its regulators as being highly susceptible to acts of fraud and money laundering.” A spouse’s, friend’s or company account can therefore trigger a rejection or a compliance review unless the broker confirms the arrangement in advance.
Confirm the destination currency
A broker may publish separate instructions for dollars, euros, pounds or another currency. Sending a currency to an account that does not accept it can result in rejection or automatic conversion under the receiving bank’s policy. Decide whether your local bank will convert your funds before the wire or whether a permitted foreign-currency account will be used, then obtain instructions for that exact route.

In IBKR’s documented workflow, you begin in Client Portal by creating a wire-deposit notification. The notification tells the broker to expect funds; it does not transfer money from your bank. You must separately submit the payment through your bank.
- Sign in to the broker’s Client Portal or equivalent funding area.
- Choose the deposit or funding option and select bank wire.
- Select the currency and enter the amount or other requested details.
- Submit the deposit notification.
- Open the resulting wire instructions and copy every field exactly, including beneficiary name, beneficiary account or IBAN, SWIFT/BIC, bank address, intermediary details, currency and payment reference.
IBKR says, “In the case of wire deposits, please note that routing instructions vary by currency type and the instructions which you will need to supply to your bank are made available upon creation of a deposit notification through Client Portal.” Treat those instructions as account- and currency-specific. If your bank asks for a field that is absent, contact the broker and the bank rather than guessing.
Step 3: Ask your bank what an investment wire requires
Questions to ask before filling the form
- Does the bank allow an individual customer to send an outbound payment to a foreign brokerage or investment platform?
- Which purpose or transaction code applies to a brokerage deposit?
- What identity, tax, source-of-funds or broker documents must accompany the request?
- Which currencies can the bank send directly, and where will conversion occur?
- Must the payment be initiated in a branch, through online banking, by telephone or through a dedicated foreign-exchange desk?
- What are the bank’s sending fee, exchange-rate spread, daily limit and approval time?
- Which intermediary or correspondent banks may be involved, and who pays their charges?
- What happens if the beneficiary account cannot receive the source currency?
Give the bank the broker’s live instructions, not a generic broker name. A bank may require local beneficiary fields in addition to the SWIFT/BIC and account number shown by the broker.

Purpose codes are not interchangeable
One FNB South African FAQ uses the wording “512-04: Deposit into a foreign currency account.” That label describes a deposit to a foreign-currency bank account on FNB’s page; it should not be reused as a universal purpose code for a brokerage wire. Your bank or foreign-exchange authority may prescribe a different code, description or document set for an investment payment.
Online banking versus a branch
FNB describes initiating global payments through its app or online banking and using SWIFT for online cross-border payments. This is an example of a bank-specific process, not a continent-wide standard. If your bank’s online form does not list investment transfers, stop and ask its international-payments team whether the transfer is permitted and how it must be submitted.
Step 4: Enter the beneficiary details without altering them
International wires can fail because a single field was changed or omitted. Transcribe the broker’s current instruction into the bank form and check it character by character.
| Field | What to use |
|---|---|
| Beneficiary | The name specified in the broker’s current instruction, which may be a receiving bank or a broker-related entity. |
| Account or IBAN | The exact account number or IBAN generated or displayed for your selected currency. |
| SWIFT/BIC | The code shown in the live instruction; do not substitute a code found elsewhere. |
| Bank address | The address requested by the receiving instruction or your bank’s mandatory field. |
| Intermediary bank | Include it only as specified. Some routes use a correspondent bank for a particular currency. |
| Reference or memo | Use the broker’s required customer or deposit reference exactly so the payment can be matched. |
| Currency | The same currency selected in the broker notification and accepted by the destination account. |
FNB’s foreign-exchange FAQ explains that IBANs are used for many European, Middle Eastern and Caribbean destinations, while other destinations may require account and branch details. The broker’s instruction remains the controlling source for the destination and currency; your bank may request additional local fields.
Step 5: Calculate the complete cost
The amount debited from your local account can exceed the amount credited to the broker because several costs may apply. Ask for a written or on-screen quote before confirming.

|---|---|
| Foreign-exchange conversion | The rate used, the bank’s spread, and whether conversion occurs before the wire or along the route. |
| Sending-bank fee | The fixed or percentage charge for initiating the international payment. |
| Intermediary charges | Fees deducted by correspondent banks between your bank and the broker’s receiving bank. |
| Recipient-bank charges | Any fee taken by the receiving institution before the broker receives the funds. |
| Charge allocation | Whether you select a sender-pays option, shared charges or another arrangement. |
FNB’s FAQ describes an “OUR” option in which the sender is charged for initial and post-transaction charges received from the recipient bank. That wording does not establish a fixed fee; check your bank’s current tariff and the quote for your payment. IBKR says it does not cover fees imposed by the sender or other financial institutions, so the broker may credit less than the amount you instructed if charges are deducted in transit.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Do not compare routes using the wire fee alone. A lower stated fee can be outweighed by a less favorable exchange rate or by correspondent deductions. Compare the local-currency amount you will pay with the foreign-currency amount the broker is expected to receive.
Step 6: Submit the payment and preserve an audit trail
- Review the beneficiary, account, SWIFT/BIC, currency, reference and charge option against the broker’s live instruction.
- Confirm that the sender name and account match the brokerage customer’s name.
- Attach the documents your bank requested and answer any source-of-funds or investment-purpose questions accurately.
- Authorize the payment and save the confirmation, transaction number, exchange rate, fees and timestamp.
- Keep a copy of the broker deposit notification and the bank’s payment reference.
- Monitor both institutions’ messages. If the broker does not credit the deposit after the bank’s stated processing window, give the broker the payment reference and ask the bank to trace the wire.
Never send a second payment simply because the first one is not visible yet. A duplicate can create a second compliance review, additional fees or an unintended investment balance.
How long can an international brokerage wire take?
There is no reliable Africa-wide arrival time. The elapsed time depends on the sending bank’s queue, currency, correspondent route, compliance screening, local and foreign holidays, the receiving bank and the broker’s own matching process. A payment can leave your account before it is visible in the brokerage ledger.
Ask your bank for its expected dispatch and trace procedure, then ask the broker how it identifies incoming wires and what proof it needs for an investigation. If a payment is delayed, check these points in order:
- Whether the bank actually released the wire or left it pending for documents.
- Whether the currency and beneficiary account match the broker’s instruction.
- Whether the payment reference identifies your brokerage account.
- Whether an intermediary bank requested clarification or deducted a charge.
- Whether the broker has received the funds but has not completed its compliance or reconciliation step.
South Africa: a bounded example of limits and reporting
South African residents must follow South African exchange-control and tax requirements; these rules cannot be generalized to residents of other African countries. FNB’s Global Account page describes eligibility for qualifying South African residents who are taxpayers, at least 18 and holders of a qualifying FNB cheque account in good standing.
That page currently states a R2 million single discretionary allowance and a foreign-investment allowance of up to R10 million with relevant tax clearance. These are FNB page statements accessed in 2026, in a South African product context. Bank terms, regulatory limits and tax-clearance procedures can change, so verify the current position with your authorized dealer bank and the South African Reserve Bank before relying on either figure.

FNB also states that, as an authorized dealer in foreign exchange, FirstRand and its divisions, including RMB and FNB, must report cross-border customer transactions to the South African Reserve Bank. Reporting does not mean that every transaction is prohibited; it means the bank’s documentation and classification requirements matter.
The South African Reserve Bank’s 2026 Currency and Exchanges Guidelines for individuals identify online international trading accounts as including platforms used to trade foreign stocks, currencies, CFDs, commodities or indices. The guidance warns that unauthorized retention of foreign-currency balances will be viewed seriously. A South African customer should read the current guidance and obtain the bank’s instructions before opening or repeatedly funding such an account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How other African jurisdictions should approach the same process
If you live outside South Africa, replace the South African steps with your own regulator’s and bank’s rules. Do not assume that a South African allowance, code, tax-clearance process or FNB product exists in your country.
Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco and other markets
Anecdotal questions such as “How do I fund my Interactive Brokers account from Ghana?” or whether someone in Morocco has funded an IBKR account do not establish that a route is legal, available or representative. For your jurisdiction, ask the bank’s foreign-exchange desk which investment payments are allowed, what evidence of the broker’s status is required, whether there are annual or transaction limits, and how the payment must be reported. Confirm tax treatment with the relevant authority or a qualified local adviser.
Use the local regulator and authorized bank
Foreign-exchange permissions can differ by residency, account type, source of funds, currency and purpose. Obtain the current rule from your country’s central bank or foreign-exchange authority, then have the sending bank apply it to your transaction. A broker’s acceptance of your application does not override local exchange-control law.

Direct wire versus a foreign-currency account
Some customers consider holding foreign currency at a local bank and then paying the broker, rather than converting local currency immediately before a direct wire. Neither route is universally cheaper or available. Compare them only after your bank confirms that both are permitted and that the foreign-currency account can legally be used for an investment payment.
Best Value
| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Does the bank permit this route for residents and for the selected broker? |
| Currency support | Can the account and destination receive the same currency without forced conversion? |
| Local rules | Do allowances, reporting or tax documents differ between the routes? |
| Total cost | What are the conversion spread, account charges, wire fee and intermediary deductions? |
| Traceability | Will the payment originate from an account in the brokerage customer’s name and carry the required reference? |
| Timing | How long does conversion, dispatch, intermediary routing and broker crediting take? |
FNB’s “512-04: Deposit into a foreign currency account” wording is an example of a bank’s label for a foreign-currency-account deposit. It is not evidence that the same code or route applies to a brokerage transfer in another country.
Common failure modes and fixes
The bank rejects the purpose or asks for more documents
Do not change the purpose code to make the form submit. Ask the bank what investment category it recognizes and which broker, tax or source-of-funds documents it requires. If the bank cannot process the payment, ask whether its foreign-exchange desk or branch handles permitted investment wires.
The broker rejects the deposit as third-party
Check the legal name on the sending account, the brokerage profile and the payment instruction. If they differ, stop sending funds and ask the broker whether a documented exception is possible. A refund can create extra fees and another compliance review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe payment is returned
Confirm the currency, account, SWIFT/BIC, intermediary details and reference. Ask the bank whether the destination rejected the source currency or whether a correspondent bank returned it. Request the return reason before attempting another transfer.
The credited amount is lower than expected
Compare the bank confirmation with the broker’s credited amount and ask both institutions for a fee breakdown. Sending, intermediary and receiving-bank charges may have been deducted; IBKR states that it does not absorb fees imposed by other financial institutions.
The transfer is delayed
Use the bank’s trace process and provide the payment reference to the broker. Check compliance holds, holidays, missing documents and reference errors before initiating another payment.
The online form has no matching beneficiary field
Do not compress or rewrite the instruction. Contact the bank to learn which local field corresponds to the broker’s beneficiary, intermediary or reference data. Ask the broker to confirm any field that remains ambiguous.

A repeatable checklist for every deposit
- Broker accepts your country of residence.
- Chosen currency and wire route are supported.
- Fresh deposit notification created, where the broker requires one.
- Live beneficiary, SWIFT/BIC, account, intermediary and reference details copied.
- Sending account name matches the brokerage account.
- Bank confirms investment-payment permission, purpose code and documents.
- Exchange rate, spread, sending fee, intermediary charges and charge allocation compared.
- Local foreign-exchange, tax and reporting rules checked.
- Payment confirmation and deposit notification saved.
- Trace procedure understood before sending a large or repeat payment.
What to verify before increasing the amount or frequency
A successful first transfer does not prove that a larger or recurring payment is allowed. Before increasing the amount, ask whether a different allowance, tax-clearance document, source-of-funds review or reporting step applies. Recheck the broker’s instructions because receiving accounts and references can change. Keep records that connect each bank payment to the corresponding brokerage deposit, including the date, currency, amount, fees and reference.
The safest general rule is simple: use the broker’s current instructions, your own bank’s approved process and your jurisdiction’s current foreign-exchange guidance together. None of those sources can be replaced by a generic code, an old routing number or an anecdote from another country.
