How to Freeze Your Credit After a Social Security Scam

If a caller tricked you into revealing your Social Security number, place a free credit freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. Then file an identity-theft report, review all three credit reports, and contact any business tied to fraudulent activity. A freeze makes it harder to open new credit in your name, but it does not report the scam, close fraudulent accounts, or remove information already on a report.

1. Stop the scam and secure anything else you disclosed

End contact with the caller. Do not provide another verification code, password, bank detail, Social Security number, payment, gift card, or wire transfer. Caller ID can be spoofed, so a familiar-looking number is not proof that the call was from a government agency.

If you shared online-banking credentials, debit-card or credit-card details, account numbers, or one-time codes, contact the relevant financial institution using the number on its statement, card, or official website. Ask what account-protection steps are appropriate, replace compromised credentials, and watch for unauthorized transactions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change passwords and PINs that could be connected to the exposed information. Use a different password for each important account and turn on multifactor authentication where it is available. These actions protect existing accounts; the credit freeze addresses a different risk: someone using your identity to seek new credit.

Do not call the scammer back to demand an explanation or to test whether the threat is real. A follow-up call can expose more information and gives the impersonator another opportunity to pressure you. Save the information you already have, then use official agency and bureau channels that you locate independently.

2. Freeze your credit files at all three bureaus

A security freeze limits access to your credit report when a lender is deciding whether to issue new credit. That restriction can make it substantially harder for an identity thief to open a new account. The freeze is free and remains in place until you lift or remove it.

You must request the freeze from each nationwide credit bureau. Freezing one file does not automatically freeze the other two. There is no charge for placing, temporarily lifting, or removing a security freeze under the federal consumer process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the FTC bureau-contact directory

Start with the Federal Trade Commission’s official Credit Bureau Contacts page. Use the current contact route shown there for each of the three bureaus, and follow that bureau’s instructions. Bureau webpages, phone menus, and identity-verification steps can change, so use the current instructions rather than a link or telephone number supplied by the suspicious caller.

  1. Open the FTC Credit Bureau Contacts page from a device you trust.
  2. Select the freeze instructions for Equifax and complete the request.
  3. Repeat the process for Experian.
  4. Repeat it again for TransUnion.
  5. Save each confirmation, account login, PIN, or lift instructions the bureau provides. Store them somewhere secure; you will need the relevant bureau’s process if you later apply for credit or want a temporary lift.

Requesting all three freezes is the central protection after an SSN disclosure. A freeze controls access for new-credit decisions; it does not stop every possible use of an SSN, prevent an existing account from being taken over, or automatically investigate a scam.

How long the freeze lasts and what it costs

A freeze stays until you remove it or ask the bureau to lift it. It does not expire after a set number of months, and you do not have to pay a subscription to keep it active. Keep the confirmation from each bureau because the instructions for a temporary lift or permanent removal are bureau-specific.

3. Decide whether to add a fraud alert

A fraud alert is an additional signal to potential creditors, not a substitute for three freezes. It asks a business to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before extending new credit.

Protection What it does Where to request it Duration and requirements
Credit freeze Limits access to a credit report for new-credit decisions, making it harder for an identity thief to open a new account. Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. Free; stays until you lift or remove it.
Initial fraud alert Requests reasonable identity verification before a business issues credit. Contact any one of the three bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two. Free for one year.
Extended fraud alert Requires potential creditors to contact you before issuing credit. Request through a bureau and provide an FTC Identity Theft Report as directed. Seven years.

You can use both protections. The alert gives creditors a warning and verification instruction, while the freezes restrict report access. If you choose an initial alert, you only need to contact one bureau for the alert itself; that one is responsible for notifying the other two. The three freeze requests still must be made individually.

An initial alert lasts one year and is free. You can ask for another alert when that period ends if the risk continues. An extended alert lasts seven years, but it is not the default option: you must provide an FTC Identity Theft Report in the manner the bureau requires. An alert does not block report access, so a creditor may still obtain your report after taking the required verification steps.

4. Report the incident and create an official recovery plan

File a report through IdentityTheft.gov. The service creates a recovery plan tailored to the information you provide and supplies documentation that can help when you dispute fraudulent accounts or report misuse to a business.

If the call involved someone pretending to be from the Social Security Administration, also report it through ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Keep the date and time of the call, the number displayed, the caller’s name or badge claim, the story they told, payment instructions, email addresses, text messages, voicemails, and any documents they sent. Do not keep communicating with the scammer to collect more information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why an official report matters

An FTC Identity Theft Report can support an extended seven-year fraud alert and the process for blocking fraudulent information from your credit reports. It also gives businesses and bureaus a consistent record of what happened. Save the confirmation and any recovery-plan documents in a secure folder.

The report is not the same thing as a credit freeze. Filing it does not automatically freeze any bureau file, close an account, or notify every creditor. Complete those steps separately and keep the report available when a bureau or business asks for documentation.

5. Obtain and inspect all three credit reports

Use AnnualCreditReport.com to obtain your reports. FTC recovery guidance says consumers can check their reports weekly for free. Review each report separately because an account or inquiry can appear on one file and not another.

Look for more than unfamiliar credit cards

  • Accounts or loans you did not open.
  • Hard inquiries from businesses you did not contact.
  • Collection accounts you do not recognize.
  • Incorrect addresses, employers, names, or other identifying details that could indicate a mixed or manipulated file.
  • Changes in balances, payment history, or account status that you cannot explain.

Download or print a copy of each report and mark every item that needs investigation. Note the bureau, creditor name, account number (using only the last few digits in your own records), dates, balances, and the reason you believe the item is fraudulent. Do not assume that an unfamiliar company is automatically identity theft; check whether it is a legitimate account, a transferred debt, or a business operating under a different name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checking a report does not cancel a freeze. You can obtain your own report while a freeze is active. Look again after you send disputes or blocking requests, because a corrected file may not update all three bureaus at the same time.

6. Contact the business connected to suspected fraud

For each account or transaction you did not authorize, contact the company’s fraud department. Explain that the account resulted from identity theft, ask it to close or restrict the account, and request written confirmation of the outcome. Ask what documents it needs, including an FTC Identity Theft Report, proof of identity, or a police report if the company specifically requests one.

Keep a dated log of every call, letter, email, case number, representative’s name, document sent, and promised action. Send copies rather than irreplaceable originals. Use a delivery method that gives you evidence of receipt when mailing important documents.

Ask the business whether it has sold or transferred the account to a collector. If so, record the collector’s information and address the fraudulent debt with that company too. A freeze will not close a fraudulent account that is already open, so direct contact is necessary even when all three freezes are active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Request blocking of fraudulent credit-report information

The FTC provides a sample letter and documentation checklist for asking a credit bureau to block information that resulted from identity theft. The typical package includes:

  • A copy of your FTC Identity Theft Report.
  • Proof of your identity.
  • The relevant details identifying each fraudulent account, inquiry, or other entry.
  • A clear statement that the information resulted from identity theft and should be blocked.

Send the request to the bureau reporting the inaccurate item, following the bureau’s current submission instructions. If the same fraudulent information appears on more than one report, make a separate request to each bureau. Retain the complete package and proof of delivery.

For the FTC’s specific identity-theft blocking procedure, the bureau generally must block the identified information within four business days after receiving the required materials. That timeframe applies to a properly documented blocking request; it is not a promise that every dispute, investigation, or account-closure request will be completed in four days.

Check that your documentation is legible and that the identifying information matches the report. Omitting the identity-theft report, proof of identity, or the exact account details can delay the request. Keep a copy of every page and note the date the bureau received it.

8. Understand what a freeze can and cannot do

What it helps prevent

A freeze restricts access to your credit report for many new-credit decisions. Without the report access a lender normally uses, an impostor may have a harder time opening a new loan or credit-card account in your name.

What it does not fix automatically

  • It does not notify the FTC, the Social Security Administration, your bank, or a creditor that you were scammed.
  • It does not close an account that was already opened fraudulently.
  • It does not remove inaccurate entries from a credit report.
  • It does not prevent all misuse of an SSN, such as attempts involving employers, tax filings, benefits, utilities, or services that do not rely on a frozen credit file.
  • It does not protect an account whose password or payment credentials were also stolen.

That is why the freeze, fraud alert, official report, report review, and direct business contacts are separate steps rather than interchangeable options.

9. Recognize the Social Security impersonation script

Scammers commonly claim that an SSN has been suspended, linked to a crime, or will be used unless you “verify” it. The FTC’s guidance is direct: Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. The agency also says, SSA will never call to threaten you or your benefits.

An unexpected caller who demands money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, bank transfers, or secrecy is not following a legitimate Social Security process. Do not press a caller’s number, call back using the displayed caller ID, or rely on a badge number as proof. Find the agency’s contact information independently if you need to verify a real benefits question.

Legitimate government contact does not require you to keep a call secret or pay immediately to “protect” an SSN. Reporting the impersonation helps document the event even if you do not yet see a fraudulent account.

10. Keep a recovery file and monitor for follow-up problems

Create one secure folder containing your three freeze confirmations, fraud-alert confirmation if used, FTC report, credit reports, dispute letters, delivery receipts, business case numbers, and notes of every conversation. A simple chronological log prevents missed deadlines and helps you give consistent information to a creditor or bureau.

Check bank and card statements frequently for unauthorized activity. Continue reviewing your credit reports for new accounts or inquiries, including after an initial cleanup. If a company responsible for exposing your information offers free credit monitoring, you may use it, but monitoring is an optional notification tool and does not replace a freeze or the recovery steps above.

There is no need to buy a product to place a freeze, file the government reports, or obtain the free reports. Be cautious of services that charge for a government step that is available without a fee, or that promise to erase every consequence immediately. Use monitoring only as a supplement and continue the hands-on review and dispute process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. If you need credit while the freeze is active

A freeze does not permanently block you from borrowing. When you are ready to apply, follow the relevant bureau’s current instructions to lift the freeze temporarily or remove it. Ask the lender which bureau it will check so you can act on the correct file, and restore the freeze after the application if you still want the protection. Keep the bureau’s confirmation showing when the lift begins and ends.

Do not give a lender a freeze PIN or login through an unsolicited call or message. Initiate the lift yourself through the bureau’s official channel.

If a lender checks more than one bureau, a lift at only one bureau may not be enough. Confirm the lender’s requirements before you submit an application, then place the freeze back on every file you lifted once the application is complete.

12. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Freezing only the bureau whose report you checked first.
  • Assuming a fraud alert automatically freezes your files.
  • Using a phone number, link, or payment request supplied by the caller.
  • Waiting to report because no fraudulent account is visible yet.
  • Sending original identity documents instead of copies.
  • Failing to keep confirmation numbers, delivery records, and written outcomes.
  • Paying a third party for a free government or bureau process.

Each mistake can leave a gap: one unfrozen file, an unreported account, or no evidence for a later dispute. Work from official FTC pages and the instructions supplied by the specific bureau or business involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. A practical order-of-operations checklist

  1. Stop communicating with the scammer and send no more money or information.
  2. Secure any bank, card, email, or other account whose credentials or payment details were exposed.
  3. Request a freeze from Equifax, then Experian, then TransUnion through the FTC’s current bureau-contact routes.
  4. Optionally place a free one-year initial fraud alert through one bureau.
  5. File at IdentityTheft.gov and, for an SSA-impersonation call, report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  6. Get all three reports from AnnualCreditReport.com and mark unfamiliar accounts and inquiries.
  7. Contact each affected business’s fraud department and request written closure or correction confirmation.
  8. Send documented blocking requests to every bureau carrying fraudulent information.
  9. Keep confirmations, copies, dates, and case numbers together, and continue checking for new activity.

Following the steps in this order puts the strongest immediate barrier in place first, then creates the records needed to investigate and remove damage that may already exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to freeze all three credit reports after an SSN scam?

Yes. A freeze placed with Equifax does not automatically apply to Experian or TransUnion. Request a separate free freeze from each bureau through the FTC’s current bureau-contact page.

Is a fraud alert the same as a credit freeze?

No. A fraud alert asks creditors to verify your identity and can be placed through one bureau for one year; that bureau notifies the other two. A freeze restricts report access and must be requested separately from all three bureaus. You may use both.

How long does a credit freeze last?

It remains until you lift or remove it. Save each bureau’s confirmation and instructions so you can arrange a temporary lift when you apply for credit.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I do not see a fraudulent account yet?

Still place all three freezes, file an IdentityTheft.gov report, and check your reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. Keep reviewing for new inquiries or accounts because a freeze does not report the scam or investigate existing misuse.

Can a freeze remove an account opened by the scammer?

No. Contact the company’s fraud department to close or restrict the account, then send the FTC Identity Theft Report, proof of identity, and account details to each bureau reporting the fraudulent entry. The FTC blocking procedure generally requires action within four business days after a complete request is received.

What does an extended fraud alert require?

An extended alert lasts seven years and requires an FTC Identity Theft Report submitted as the bureau directs. It is different from the free one-year initial alert.

Will a freeze stop every use of my Social Security number?

No. It primarily restricts report access for many new-credit decisions. It does not prevent all possible misuse involving employment, tax filings, benefits, utilities, services, account takeovers, or already-open accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to pay a company to freeze my credit or monitor it?

No payment is required to place the three freezes, file the FTC reports, or obtain the free reports. Optional monitoring may provide notifications, but it does not replace a freeze or the recovery steps.

The Bottom Line

Freeze Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately, then file at IdentityTheft.gov, inspect all three reports, and contact every affected business. Add a fraud alert if useful, submit documented blocking requests for fraudulent entries, and keep monitoring. The freeze is free and lasting, but it is only one part of recovering from an SSN impersonation scam.
