After a data breach, place a free credit freeze separately with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A freeze restricts access to your credit report for new-credit decisions, making it harder for someone to open credit in your name; it does not stop unauthorized use of accounts you already have. Check those accounts as well, and follow the breach-specific guidance at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.
How do I freeze my credit after a data breach?
You must request a freeze with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus. A request to one does not freeze your reports at the other two. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says a freeze is free, does not affect your credit score and stays in place until you lift it. Its consumer guidance says, “A credit freeze is something you can do anytime, for any reason.”

- Use each bureau’s official freeze service. Request a security freeze from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can also confirm bureau contact routes through the FTC’s credit freeze and fraud alert guidance.
- Save your sign-in and recovery details. Keep them somewhere secure so you can manage or temporarily lift each freeze later.
- Check that each request is complete. If a bureau’s confirmation or online account does not show the freeze, follow up with that bureau.
FTC guidance says online or phone requests must be placed within one business day and lifted within one hour. These are federal service timing rules; check the FTC’s current instructions when you submit a request in case the rules or contact routes have changed.

A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report for many new-credit decisions. Because a prospective creditor generally needs to review a report, the restriction can make it harder for a thief to open new credit in your name. It is not a blanket block on identity theft: it does not prevent unauthorized charges or changes to existing bank, credit-card or insurance accounts.

A fraud alert is a separate, free option. It leaves report access available but asks businesses to take steps to verify your identity before issuing new credit. You can have an alert while a freeze is in place.

| Protection | What it does | Where to request it | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report for new-credit decisions. | Request separately from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. | Until you lift it. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity; it does not block report access. | Contact one of the three bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two. | One year; it may be renewed. |
| Extended fraud alert | Provides an identity-verification alert for people who have experienced identity theft. | Request it through a bureau and provide the required documentation. See the FTC’s current instructions. | Seven years, according to FTC guidance. |
An initial fraud alert can add a prompt to verify identity, but unlike a freeze it does not restrict report access. If you have an FTC Identity Theft Report or police report, check the FTC’s current documentation requirements before requesting an extended alert.
What should I do if my Social Security number was exposed?
Follow the directions in the breach notice, but do not rely on the notice alone. Use the FTC’s breach response guide for steps tailored to the exposed information. If your Social Security number was exposed, get your credit reports and look for accounts or inquiries you do not recognize. IdentityTheft.gov says you can check reports weekly for free at AnnualCreditReport.com.

Also take up any free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance the affected organization offers. These services can be useful, but their coverage, monitored information and duration depend on the specific offer; they do not replace a freeze, account checks or action on suspicious activity.
Post-breach checklist: protect accounts as well as credit files
- Read the breach notice carefully. Use a contact route from the notice or the organization’s official website, rather than links in an unexpected message.
- Freeze all three credit reports. Consider adding an initial fraud alert if you want businesses to receive an identity-verification prompt.
- Review existing accounts. Check bank, card and insurance statements for unauthorized charges, new payees or account changes.
- Respond to suspected account misuse. Contact the company’s fraud department, ask it to close or freeze the affected account, and change related passwords and PINs.
- Report identity theft. If you find misuse, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow its individualized recovery plan.
What happens when you need to apply for credit?
Ask the lender which bureau it plans to check. If it can use one bureau, temporarily lift only that bureau’s freeze for the relevant period, then reinstate the freeze after the credit check is complete. If the lender needs access to more than one report, lift the necessary freezes rather than removing all three by default. A freeze does not prevent every kind of report request: federal freeze rules do not cover employment, tenant-screening or insurance report requests in the same way they cover new-credit decisions.
