If a Nintendo Switch demo says there is not enough space to download, archive an installed game you are not playing. Open System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software, select a title, choose Archive Software, and confirm. Archiving removes the installed game files but keeps the HOME Menu icon and save data, so you can download the software again later.

For several unused titles, use System Settings > Data Management > Quick Archive. Check the demo’s eShop listing afterward because each game has its own storage requirement. If the console still lacks room, add a compatible microSD card; it can store software data, updates, downloadable content and screenshots, while save data remains in the console’s system memory.

Start with Nintendo’s built-in archive tools

Archiving is the safest no-cost first step when a demo will not download. Nintendo describes archiving as removing the installed software data while leaving your save data unaffected. The title’s icon remains available on the HOME Menu, and selecting it later lets you redownload the software.

The wording of some menu items can differ slightly after a system update. If your console does not show an option exactly as written below, look for the equivalent archive command in the same Data Management area or in the selected game’s HOME Menu options.

  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

Archive one game

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Scroll to Data Management.
  3. Select Manage Software.
  4. Choose an installed downloadable game that you are not currently using.
  5. Select Archive Software.
  6. Read the confirmation prompt and choose Archive.

The software data is removed from the storage location where it was installed. Your save data is not removed by this archive operation. The HOME Menu icon remains, which provides a shortcut to download the title again when you have enough space and an internet connection.

Archive several games with Quick Archive

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Choose Data Management.
  3. Select Quick Archive.
  4. Mark each software title you can temporarily remove.
  5. Select Archive Data, then confirm with Archive.

Quick Archive is useful when a single title does not free enough room. Select only software you can redownload later; do not treat the list as a prompt to remove games you still need immediately.

Use the game’s HOME Menu options when the settings path is inconvenient

On systems that offer the equivalent command from a title’s HOME Menu options, highlight the game, open its options, and choose the archive command. The result is the same: installed software data is removed while the title’s save data is retained. If the option is missing, use the Data Management path above.

Check the demo’s actual space requirement

After archiving, return to the demo’s Nintendo eShop listing and read the storage requirement shown there. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance says requirements vary by game, so there is no universal demo size or single amount of free space that guarantees every download will start.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Compare that requirement with the console’s available storage shown in System Settings > Data Management. If the available amount is still below what the listing requests, archive another title and check again. Do not assume that archiving one large game will always be sufficient; the correct amount depends on the particular demo and the space already occupied by other software, updates, downloadable content and screenshots.

Allow room for the complete installation

The eShop listing is the authoritative place to check the demo’s stated requirement for your account and console region. A download can fail when the system cannot reserve enough space for the software, even if a small amount of free space remains. Use the listing’s figure as your planning target rather than relying on the size of a previous demo.

Understand what archiving does—and what it does not do

Option What it removes or adds What happens to save data When to use it
Archive Software Removes the installed software data and keeps the HOME Menu icon for a later redownload. Save data is preserved. One game is enough to free the required room.
Quick Archive Lets you select multiple software titles and archive their data in one operation. Save data is preserved for the archived software. You need space from several unused titles.
Compatible microSD card Adds storage for software data, updates, downloadable content and screenshots. Save data remains in system memory and cannot be saved or copied to the card. You regularly need more software storage than archiving can provide.

Archiving does not create a backup of your save data on a card. It simply removes the installed game files so they can be downloaded again. You still need the appropriate Nintendo account access and an internet connection to reinstall an archived title.

Add a compatible microSD card if archiving is not enough

A microSD card is optional storage expansion for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED Model systems. Nintendo identifies the card as a place for software data, game updates, downloadable content and screenshots. It is a practical second step when your library is larger than the console’s available internal storage.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Choose the card for your actual library

  • Estimate how many full games, demos, updates and downloadable-content packages you expect to keep installed.
  • Verify that the product listing explicitly supports your Nintendo Switch model and the console’s required card format.
  • Choose capacity based on that planned library rather than the size of one demo.
  • Follow Nintendo’s on-screen setup or formatting instructions when the card is first used.

Do not buy a card solely because it is described as a generic memory card. Compatibility is model- and format-dependent, so confirm it on the listing and, if necessary, Nintendo’s support information for your console family.

Know the storage boundary

Installing a microSD card does not move save data out of system memory. Save data stays in the console’s system memory and cannot be saved or copied to the microSD card. The card expands the place used for software-related files, not the location of your progress.

That distinction matters when deciding whether a card solves your problem. If the demo download is blocked because software storage is full, a compatible card can provide the needed space. If you are trying to copy or relocate save files, a microSD card is not the solution described by Nintendo’s Data Management guidance.

Do not delete save data as a first response

Save data is separate from downloadable software. Archiving software is designed to free space without affecting that progress, whereas deleting save data can remove the progress associated with a game. For a demo-download error, begin with Manage Software or Quick Archive and leave the save-data management screens alone.

Before confirming any command, read the label carefully. An archive command refers to installed software data; a save-data deletion command refers to progress. They are not interchangeable, and freeing space does not require sacrificing a game’s save.

Troubleshoot the download after making room

The demo still reports insufficient space

  1. Open the demo’s eShop listing again and note its stated storage requirement.
  2. Return to System Settings > Data Management and check available space.
  3. Archive another unused title with Manage Software or select more titles in Quick Archive.
  4. Check whether updates, downloadable content or screenshots occupy the remaining storage.
  5. Retry the download only after the available space exceeds the listing’s requirement.

There is no guaranteed number of games that must be archived. The required amount is specific to the demo and to what is already installed on your console.

The archive option is missing

Some Data Management features require a system update. Install the available Nintendo Switch system update, then revisit System Settings > Data Management. Menu wording can also vary by software version, so look for an equivalent archive option rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You archived the wrong title

The HOME Menu icon should remain after archiving. Select that icon when you want to reinstall the game, then follow the download prompt. Archiving is reversible through redownloading; it does not make the software permanently unavailable.

The card is not accepted or does not provide the expected room

Confirm that the card is a compatible microSD card for your Nintendo Switch model and that the console recognizes it in Data Management. If the card’s capacity is not reflected, stop before moving or deleting additional content and verify the card’s compatibility and setup instructions. A card cannot be used to store save data, so it will not solve a save-data-management question.

You cannot redownload an archived title

Check that the console is connected to the internet and that you are using the Nintendo account that obtained the software. The archive process leaves the HOME Menu icon, but the software files must be downloaded again before the title can be played.

A simple decision path for future downloads

  1. Read the listing first. Check the demo’s stated storage requirement before choosing what to remove.
  2. Check available space. Use System Settings > Data Management to see whether the console can accommodate it.
  3. Archive one unused game. Use Manage Software when a single title should provide enough room.
  4. Use Quick Archive for a larger cleanup. Select several titles instead of repeating the individual process.
  5. Recheck the listing and retry. Confirm that the available space now exceeds the requirement.
  6. Plan for expansion if this repeats. Add a compatible microSD card for software data, updates, downloadable content and screenshots while keeping in mind that save data remains in system memory.

This sequence keeps the no-cost, reversible option ahead of hardware expansion and avoids unnecessary changes to save data.

Scope: which Nintendo systems these steps cover

These instructions apply to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED Model systems. Nintendo Switch 2 uses different storage guidance and a different card format, so do not apply this procedure or purchase assumptions to that system without checking its specific support documentation.

Quick Recap

What to remember

  • Use Archive Software for one title or Quick Archive for several.
  • Archiving removes installed software data but preserves save data and the HOME Menu icon.
  • Check the individual demo listing because storage requirements vary by game.
  • A compatible microSD card expands software storage, but save data stays in system memory.
  • Do not delete save data merely to make room for a download.
