The safest way to reclaim space on a Windows gaming handheld is to work from largest to smallest: open Settings > System > Storage, inspect what is using the drive, apply only the cleanup items you recognize, then remove or relocate large games and personal files through their normal apps. Consider a microSD card, internal SSD replacement, or external drive only after checking your exact handheld model, slot, and SSD form factor.
Start by identifying the full drive
Do not begin by deleting random folders. Windows can show whether the shortage is caused by installed games, temporary files, personal media, system-reserved data, or another category.

- Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows presents categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system-reserved storage. The labels and layout can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Storage settings guidance.
- Open File Explorer > This PC and check the free-space bar for the system drive and any installed SD card or external drive. A handheld may have more than one storage location, so confirm which drive is nearly full before changing anything.
- Open the largest category in Storage and note the folders, applications, or file types it identifies. Treat the displayed amount as an estimate to investigate, not as permission to erase everything in that category.
Checking first prevents a common mistake: removing a few screenshots while a single game installation or video folder is consuming most of the drive.
Make a drive-by-drive inventory
Write down which drive is nearly full and what Windows says is using it. The internal system drive is usually where Windows, updates, temporary data, and default app installations live. A microSD card or external drive can show plenty of free space without changing the amount available on C:. That distinction matters when an update fails because the system drive, rather than the game-storage drive, is the one running out of room.

Storage categories can take a moment to recalculate after an uninstall or large deletion. Recheck the page after each major cleanup instead of assuming that an unchanged number means the operation failed.
Use Windows’ built-in cleanup tools
Review Cleanup recommendations in Windows 11
Windows 11 groups suggested deletions in Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. The groups can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.
- Open each group and inspect the individual items.
- Read the space estimate shown for that group and for each item.
- Select only files or apps you recognize as disposable, then confirm the cleanup.
Large files can be useful even when Windows calls them unused, and a cloud-synced file may still be needed on another device. Menu names differ in Windows 10; use the Storage page and its available cleanup controls rather than assuming the Windows 11 wording will appear. Microsoft documents the process in its free-space guide.
Use the recommendations as a review list, not a one-click purge. Expand a category far enough to identify the actual files or applications. A downloaded installer, a recording you want to archive, or a cloud copy that is still needed elsewhere may all look like easy savings until you check the contents.
Configure Storage Sense instead of deleting blindly
Storage Sense can automatically remove eligible temporary files and Recycle Bin content. Microsoft says it operates on the system drive, typically C:. Its defaults do not manage the Downloads folder or cloud content unless you configure those locations.
- Go to Settings > System > Storage and open Storage Sense.
- Review the temporary-file and Recycle Bin options before enabling a schedule.
- Check the settings for Downloads and cloud files. Leave them off if you want those files preserved, or choose a retention period only when you understand what will be removed.
- Run Storage Sense manually or enable a schedule after reviewing the selections.
Storage Sense is useful for recurring housekeeping, but it is not a substitute for reviewing large games and personal folders. Those files generally require a deliberate decision about uninstalling, moving, or keeping them.
The important distinction is between what Storage Sense is allowed to manage and what remains under your control. Temporary data and eligible Recycle Bin content can be automated, while Downloads and cloud content require explicit settings. If you use the handheld for school, work, or content creation as well as gaming, leave those locations unmanaged until you have checked their contents.

From the Storage page, open Temporary files and examine the categories before confirming. Keep anything you still need, such as files waiting in a downloads queue or an installation package you intentionally saved. If you delete files through File Explorer, they normally remain in the Recycle Bin and continue occupying space until the bin is emptied.
Empty the Recycle Bin only after checking its contents. This is the final removal step for items you have already decided you no longer need; it is not a way to recover files later.
Because a handheld’s internal drive can be relatively small, temporary data and deleted files can matter even when they are not visible in your game library. After emptying the bin, return to Storage and compare the category totals. If the free-space figure has not changed, confirm that you emptied the bin on the drive that was actually full and that another category, such as installed apps, is not responsible.

Manage large games through their launchers
Game libraries are often the largest controllable use of space on a handheld. Use the launcher’s own uninstall, library, or storage-management controls so it can update its records and remove associated files correctly. Do not drag a game directory to another drive and do not delete launcher folders by hand unless the launcher’s current documentation explicitly instructs you to do so.
ASUS documents the following launcher support for the ROG Ally family:

These services do not share one universal move procedure, and labels can change after an app update. The ASUS ROG Ally FAQ confirms the launcher support; consult the current instructions inside the launcher you actually use.
When uninstalling is the right choice
Uninstall a game you are finished with, have completed, or can redownload reliably. Keep saved games only where the launcher or game requires them; many titles store saves separately from the main installation, while others use cloud synchronization. Check the title’s own save and synchronization settings before removing it.
Uninstalling is often the cleanest option when a title is not being played. It lets the launcher remove the installation and update its library record at the same time. Record the title’s save and synchronization behavior first, especially if you play offline or use more than one launcher.

Move a game only through a launcher-supported library or install-location feature. Verify that the destination drive is connected and available whenever you play. If a launcher offers no supported move option, uninstalling and reinstalling to the destination is safer than manually renaming or relocating folders.
When the destination is a removable card or external drive, remember that the drive must remain available for the launcher to find the installation. A move can free internal space without reducing the game’s installed size, so confirm the destination and the resulting free-space figure before starting another download or update.
Sort personal files by size
Microsoft specifically highlights Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads as folders that can contain large files. In File Explorer:
- Open one of those folders.
- Switch to a details view and sort by Size.
- Open or preview large files before deciding whether they are still needed.
- Delete files you no longer want, or copy them to an external drive or compatible SD card.
- Empty the Recycle Bin if the deleted files should actually be removed from the drive.
Screen recordings and downloaded installers are easy to overlook because they may sit outside your game library. Keep personal files on a removable or external drive when you need them occasionally but do not want them competing with installed games.

Cloud-synced files deserve an extra check. Removing a local copy may affect what is available on the handheld while leaving the cloud version intact, or it may remove the file from synchronization depending on the service and setting. Read the status shown for the file and use Windows’ recommendation details before selecting cloud content.

Do the same review for files copied to an SD card or external drive: open a few of the largest items from the destination before deleting the originals. This confirms that the copy completed and that the destination is readable on the handheld or another computer.
Be cautious with Windows system files
Storage cleanup may offer a previous Windows installation as a removable item after an upgrade. That folder can provide the rollback path to the earlier version. Microsoft states: “If you delete your previous version of Windows, this can’t be undone, and you won’t be able to go back to your previous version.” This warning appears in Microsoft’s free-space guidance.
Keep the previous installation while you may need to undo an upgrade or troubleshoot a newly introduced problem. Remove it only after you have decided that returning to the former Windows version is no longer necessary.

Decide whether you need more physical storage
Cleanup is free, but it cannot create space for games and files you genuinely want to keep. Expansion choices depend on the handheld’s exact slot, drive interface, physical clearance, and your willingness to open the device or reinstall software.

There is no universal speed ranking or universally correct capacity for these options. Choose based on your handheld, the way you play, and whether you are comfortable opening the device.
Think about total cost, not just purchase price
The built-in cleanup steps cost nothing and should come first. A microSD card adds a purchase cost but normally avoids opening the handheld. An internal SSD adds the drive cost and may also require time to migrate or reinstall Windows and games. An external drive can be useful for files kept elsewhere, but a cable, adapter, or separate power arrangement may affect how practical it is during handheld play. The right choice depends on convenience and compatibility as much as capacity.

Do not buy a card or SSD until you know the exact model. A part that fits one revision may not fit another, and a drive that works in a desktop may have the wrong physical length for a handheld.
Check your handheld model before buying a card or SSD
ROG Ally examples
ASUS lists microSD game storage support for the ROG Ally family. Its original ROG Ally announcement lists a 512 GB M.2 2230 SSD, while the ROG Xbox Ally X announcement lists a 1 TB M.2 2280 SSD. Those specifications show why a replacement drive must be matched to the exact model rather than chosen from a generic “handheld SSD” list.
- Check the model name and revision in Windows or on the device label.
- Confirm the supported microSD slot and any manufacturer guidance before purchasing a card.
- Confirm the M.2 length and interface before opening the chassis.
- Plan how Windows, drivers, launchers, and games will be restored if you replace the internal drive.

For another Windows handheld, use the manufacturer’s own specifications and support pages instead of assuming the Ally’s slot or M.2 dimensions apply. Confirm whether the device supports game installation on removable storage, whether the internal drive is replaceable, and what restoration process the manufacturer documents.
Do not copy Steam Deck instructions to a Windows handheld
Steam Deck hardware also supports microSD expansion, according to Valve’s hardware page, but Steam Deck uses a different operating-system environment. Its menus, file paths, and launcher behavior should not be treated as Windows instructions. Follow documentation for your own handheld and Windows edition.

The deleted files are still counted
Check the Recycle Bin. Files removed from Explorer may remain there until you empty it. Then reopen Settings > System > Storage and allow Windows to recalculate the categories.
A game still appears installed after deletion
Reopen the launcher and use its own uninstall or library-management command. Manually removing a folder can leave the launcher’s record intact, so the app may continue to report the title as installed or attempt to repair missing files.
The system drive is full even though another drive has space
Windows and many launchers use the system drive for updates, temporary data, and default installations. In Storage, identify which drive is actually full. Then change the destination only through the relevant launcher or Windows storage control; having free space on an SD card does not automatically increase free space on C:.
Cleanup recommendations show a large amount you cannot identify
Expand each recommendation and inspect its file list. Large or unused does not mean disposable. Check whether an item is a personal file, a cloud-synchronized copy, an installer, or a previous Windows installation before selecting it.
The handheld is still nearly full after cleanup
Return to Storage and compare the categories again. If games and personal files are all needed, the remaining solution is expansion that your model supports: a compatible microSD card, a correctly sized internal SSD, or an external drive for files that do not need to stay on the handheld.
A move option is missing in the launcher
Do not substitute a manual drag-and-drop operation. Launcher interfaces and supported destinations differ, and the absence of a move command may mean that uninstalling and reinstalling to the chosen drive is the supported path. Check the launcher’s current help or installation settings before proceeding.
A repeatable storage-maintenance routine
- Check Settings > System > Storage before deleting anything.
- Review Cleanup recommendations when using Windows 11, and inspect each item.
- Configure Storage Sense deliberately; verify its Downloads and cloud-content settings.
- Use each launcher’s own uninstall or storage controls for games.
- Sort Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads by size and move files you still need.
- Empty the Recycle Bin only after confirming its contents.
- Keep the previous Windows installation if rollback may still be important.
- Verify your handheld’s slot and SSD form factor before buying expansion hardware.
This order keeps reversible inspection ahead of destructive actions and prevents a storage upgrade from being used to cover files that could have been safely removed.

Will Storage Sense delete my Downloads folder?
Not by default. Microsoft says Storage Sense normally works on the system drive and does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those settings. Review the options before enabling automatic cleanup.
Can I move a game by dragging its folder to an SD card?
That is not a universal or safe workflow. Use the game launcher’s own storage, library, uninstall, or installation-location controls. If no supported move option exists, reinstalling to the destination is safer than manually relocating the folder.
Does every Windows handheld support game storage on microSD?
