Plan for more than the published minimum, and treat GTA VI’s size as unknown until Rockstar posts an official figure. Steam lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 at 115GB available on an SSD at launch, while Xbox warns that mandatory updates can need additional space. Rockstar’s cited support documentation confirms PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of GTA VI and a November 12, 2026 preload start, but does not publish a final install size as of October 16, 2026.
The safest approach is to remove games you no longer use, archive less-played PS5 titles to USB storage, and add a compatible internal M.2 SSD if you want several large games ready to launch without moving them back and forth.

What is officially known about the storage requirements?
Storage planning is different for each game and platform. The figures below separate confirmed requirements from information that has not been published.
| Game and platform | Confirmed information | What it means for your cleanup |
|---|---|---|
| GTA VI on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Rockstar confirms these console versions and says preload begins November 12, 2026. Its cited support page does not state a final install-size figure as of October 16, 2026. | Do not rely on social-media or retailer rumors. Clear a substantial amount of space before preload, then use the launcher’s actual requirement when it appears. |
| Modern Warfare 4 on Windows PC | Steam lists 115GB available on an SSD at launch. | Keep more than the listed baseline so the download, installation process and later patches do not collide with a full drive. |
| Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox | The Xbox listing warns that mandatory updates may require additional storage. A universal console-size figure is not established. | Leave headroom instead of treating a single advertised number as a permanent requirement. |
| PS5 internal expansion | Sony’s cited safety guide specifies a commercially available PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 drive, with supported capacities from 250GB through 4TB for the cited PS5 model, plus physical-fit requirements. | An installed M.2 drive is the practical way to keep PS5 games installed and playable without repeatedly transferring them. |
GTA VI’s physical package is not a way to avoid a download: Rockstar says the package contains a download code and no disc. The console still needs enough storage for the downloaded game and any updates.

Choose the right way to make room
| Option | Cost and speed | Can you play immediately? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete a game | Free; redownloading later uses time and bandwidth. | No, until you download it again. | Games you have finished or do not expect to play soon. |
| Archive to USB extended storage on PS5 | Requires a compatible USB drive; moving a game back takes time. | PS5 games cannot run directly from that USB drive. | Large games you want to keep locally without using internal playable storage. |
| Install an internal M.2 SSD in PS5 | Additional hardware and installation; offers the most convenient permanent capacity. | Yes, after installation and moving or installing the game there. | A frequently played library that should remain launch-ready. |
| Move compatible Xbox titles to supported expansion storage | Requires compatible expansion hardware; transfer time varies. | Only titles supported by that storage arrangement can launch there. | Reducing internal-console usage while retaining installed games. |
Delete when you need the fastest free space
Deletion is the simplest choice when a game is complete or rarely played. On PlayStation, a purchase you delete remains associated with your account and can be downloaded again from your game library. That makes deletion reversible, but you should account for the time and data required to reinstall it.
Archive when you want to avoid another full download
USB storage is useful for keeping a large PS5 game nearby. It is an archive, not a second execution drive: PS5 games must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can start.
Expand when several games must stay playable
An internal M.2 SSD avoids the repeated copy-back step. Check the exact PS5 model, drive dimensions, heat-management requirements and Sony’s current compatibility guidance before buying; availability and prices change.

- Open the storage dashboard. Go to Settings > Storage. Review the space categories and open Games and Apps so the largest installed items are easy to identify.
- Sort by size and identify candidates. Start with games you have finished, duplicate installations and titles that have not been used recently. Keep the games you need for regular play until you know how much room the next download actually requires.
- Use Customize before deleting a whole game. Highlight a title and choose Customize when that option appears. Some games expose separate add-ons, language packs or completed portions that can be removed without uninstalling the base game. The available components vary by title.
- Delete unused games. Remove the selected installation from the Games and Apps screen. Your purchased games can be redownloaded from the library later, but saved progress should be protected separately.
- Back up important saves. If a save matters, upload it to PlayStation Plus cloud storage before changing game data, subject to your subscription and the game’s save behavior. Do not assume that deleting an installation is the same as deleting every save, and verify the save location before confirming a broader deletion.
- Recheck the free-space figure. Return to Settings > Storage and confirm that the available amount increased. If it did not, look for another installation, add-on or media category consuming the space.
Use a USB drive to archive PS5 games
Connect a compatible USB extended-storage drive, then use the PS5 storage controls to move less-used PS5 games from console storage to the drive. This preserves the installation locally and avoids downloading the entire title again.

The limitation is important: Sony’s storage guide states that PS5 games must be moved from USB extended storage back to PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage to play. If a game remains on USB, the console will require a transfer before launch. USB storage can therefore free internal space, but it does not provide the same instant-play behavior as an internal M.2 drive.
Use USB archiving for games that you may return to, but not for a title you expect to launch repeatedly during a download or update window. Keep the drive connected and safely managed, and do not disconnect it while a transfer is in progress.
Add an internal M.2 SSD for a permanent PS5 library
An internal M.2 SSD is the strongest PS5 solution when the goal is to keep multiple large games installed and playable. Sony’s cited guidance calls for a commercially available PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe drive, supports capacities from 250GB to 4TB for the cited model, and requires the drive to meet physical-fit and heat-dissipation specifications.

Check compatibility before purchase
- Confirm that your PS5 model accepts the drive specification in Sony’s current storage guide.
- Verify the PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface and the supported capacity range.
- Check the permitted physical dimensions, including height with the heatsink installed.
- Use the required heatsink or a drive with an appropriately sized integrated heatsink.
- Confirm the retailer’s current model, warranty and return terms; product availability changes over time.
Install and format safely
Turn the console off completely, disconnect it, and follow Sony’s hardware procedure for opening the expansion bay. After installation, the PS5 will prompt you to format a compatible new drive. Formatting erases that drive, so copy off any existing data first. Once formatted, install new games there or move existing games from console storage using the Storage menu.

An M.2 drive does not eliminate the need for free space. Games still need room for patches, temporary installation files and downloadable content, so avoid filling the expansion drive to its last few gigabytes.
Free space on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox provides storage-management controls for removing games and moving compatible titles to supported expansion storage. Open the console’s storage-management screen, review the largest installations first, and remove games you no longer play or transfer suitable titles away from the internal drive.
Keep update headroom
The Xbox listing for Modern Warfare 4 warns that mandatory updates may require additional storage. That warning matters even if the initial installation appears to fit. Leave unused capacity after cleanup rather than planning to occupy every available gigabyte with the launch build.
Do not confuse a physical package with a disc installation
For GTA VI, Rockstar says the physical package contains a download code and no disc. Buying the package does not provide an offline disc installation or remove the console’s need to download the game.

Free space on a Windows PC
The Windows version of Modern Warfare 4 has a concrete launch baseline: Steam lists 115GB available on an SSD. Treat that as the space required at launch, not as a promise that future updates will fit within the same amount. Use an SSD with enough additional capacity for patches and temporary files.
Use Windows’ built-in cleanup controls
- Open Settings > System > Storage and inspect which categories are consuming the drive.
- Open Installed apps, sort by size, and uninstall games or applications you no longer use.
- Review Temporary files and remove safe-to-delete caches, old delivery files and other items Windows identifies. Read the category descriptions before confirming.
- Move or delete large video captures, screenshots, installers and archived downloads. Game clips can quietly consume more space than the games themselves.
- Empty the Recycle Bin after checking its contents.
- Return to the drive overview and verify the available-space figure before starting the game download.
Find the real bottleneck
If the launcher reports insufficient space even though File Explorer shows room, check that the selected installation drive is the SSD with the free capacity. Launchers may need temporary working space on the same drive, and another drive’s free space does not necessarily satisfy that requirement. Pause other downloads and close applications that are writing large files while the installation runs.
Optional disk-visualizer utilities can help locate unusually large folders, but review the current developer, privacy terms, Windows support and any disclosure requirements before installing a named cleanup product. Built-in Windows storage controls are sufficient for the core workflow.

Activision says Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes to deliver high-quality visuals while reducing the game’s overall hard-drive footprint. The trade-off is connectivity: Activision says Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ require a continuous internet connection for this system.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Texture streaming can reduce the amount stored permanently on the drive, but it does not make storage irrelevant. The base installation, updates, caches and other installed components still occupy local space, and unstable connectivity can affect access to streamed assets.
A launch-day storage plan that avoids surprises
- Inventory first. On your platform, sort installed games by size and note which titles you can delete, archive or move.
- Protect saves and captures. Back up important PlayStation saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, and copy irreplaceable PC or console captures before deleting files.
- Choose the least disruptive option. Delete finished games, archive infrequently played PS5 titles to USB, or install an internal M.2 SSD if transfers would become routine.
- Leave headroom. For the PC installation, do not target exactly the published launch baseline. On Xbox, account for the warning about mandatory updates. On PS5, wait for the actual GTA VI requirement because Rockstar has not published it in the cited support documentation.
- Check the destination drive. Confirm that the selected console storage, expansion drive or PC SSD—not merely another drive in the system—has the required free space.
- Start downloads before the preload window. Rockstar identifies November 12, 2026 as the GTA VI preload start. Have the cleanup completed before that date so you are not deleting files while the preload is attempting to begin.
Troubleshooting storage problems
The download says there is not enough room
Cancel or pause the download, inspect the platform’s storage screen, and remove one or more large items rather than repeatedly retrying. On PS5, check add-ons through Customize and look for games that were moved to a different category. On PC, verify the launcher’s selected SSD and temporary-file space.
A PS5 game on USB will not launch
This is expected behavior, not a failed installation. Move the game from USB extended storage back to console storage or an internal M.2 SSD, then launch it after the transfer completes.
An update fails after the game initially installed
Free additional space beyond the launch requirement. Updates can need temporary working room, and Xbox specifically warns that mandatory Modern Warfare 4 updates may require more storage than the initial package.
A deleted PlayStation game appears to be gone permanently
Open your game library while signed into the purchasing account. Sony says deleted purchases remain available for redownload. If progress is missing, check the console’s local saves and any PlayStation Plus cloud backup rather than downloading the game again immediately.
You are trying to estimate GTA VI’s final size
Do not convert rumors into a requirement. As of October 16, 2026, the cited Rockstar support documentation confirms the platforms and preload date but does not publish the final install size. Use the requirement shown by the console or launcher when Rockstar provides it.
Bottom line
For Modern Warfare 4 on PC, begin with the published SSD baseline and leave room for updates. For Xbox, plan around the explicit warning that mandatory updates can need extra storage. For GTA VI, no official final install-size figure is available in the cited Rockstar support material, so prepare space without trusting rumor numbers. On PS5, delete finished games, use Customize to remove unneeded components, archive infrequently played titles to USB, and choose a compatible internal M.2 SSD when you need several large games to remain playable at once.
