To free up phone storage safely, check the device’s storage breakdown, remove downloads or offline media you no longer need, and choose app options that preserve data where possible. Treat photos as the final step: verify they are backed up before deleting local copies.
Check what is using storage first
Look at the phone’s built-in storage screen before deleting anything. It can show whether space is tied up in apps, photos, downloaded media, or files, and may offer device-specific recommendations.

- Android: Open Settings > Storage. Menu names and available controls can vary by manufacturer and Android version. Google’s Android storage guide explains the available options.
- iPhone: Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple’s storage guide describes the categories and recommendations shown there.
Here, “storage” means space for files and apps, not the memory Android uses to run apps and the system.
Remove clutter you can identify
Start with content you recognize and can replace or do without. Review downloaded movies, music, podcasts, and files in the app or folder that holds them. Apple also identifies large Messages attachments, Files documents, and unused apps as possible space users. Delete only items you no longer need; a file’s presence in a large category does not tell you whether it is safe to remove.

Choose app options that fit what you want to keep
Android: clear cache, not storage, unless you intend to erase app data
For an app using substantial space, open its app information in Settings and look for storage controls. Clearing cache removes temporary data. Clearing storage is different: Google says it permanently deletes all data for that app. Avoid that option unless you are prepared to lose the app’s stored data and settings. Exact paths and labels vary by device.
Some Android devices also let you archive eligible apps. Archiving removes the app while retaining personal data, and its icon can remain available for re-download if the app is still on Google Play.

iPhone: offload to retain documents and data
In Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select an app to see available actions. Offload App removes the app itself while keeping its documents and data; reinstall it later to use it again. Delete App removes the app and related data, so use it only if you accept that loss. Apple notes that cached or temporary data may not be counted in an app’s reported storage.

Free local photo space only after confirming backup
Before using Google Photos’ Free up space option, confirm that backup has finished for the photos and videos you want to keep. The feature removes device copies that have been backed up; it does not mean the files have been deleted from your Google Photos account.

After removal, backed-up items remain accessible in Google Photos or at photos.google.com, but they may no longer appear in the phone’s built-in gallery. You may need an internet connection and to be signed in to view them; they will not be available as local copies offline. Follow the platform-specific instructions for Android or iPhone and iPad. On iPhone, Google’s instructions also say to remove the same items from Apple Photos’ Recently Deleted folder to recover the local space.
Keep device space and cloud space separate
Your phone’s storage and your Google Account’s cloud storage are different limits. Removing backed-up copies from the device can free handset space; it does not, by itself, increase the Google Account quota. Google Photos’ account storage manager addresses cloud-account capacity, not the phone’s local storage.

Check the result
Return to the same storage screen and review the available space. The amount freed depends on the files and app data you chose to remove; these support instructions do not establish a typical or guaranteed recovery amount. If a file needs to leave the phone but still be kept, Google’s Android guidance includes copying files to a computer by USB. Check compatibility for your particular phone and computer before relying on a cable or accessory.
