Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Chromecast with Google TV reports that there is not enough storage for an update, clear cached data first, then uninstall apps you no longer use. These are the least disruptive built-in fixes. After cleanup, run the update check on the television itself at All settings > System > About > System update; the update is not shown in the Google Home app.
If internal storage is still too full, Google documents expansion through a compatible USB-C hub with Power Delivery, a sufficiently rated charger and USB 2.0-or-faster portable storage. That setup reformats the connected storage, so treat it as a storage migration rather than a risk-free plug-in.

Use this order before changing hardware
Start with actions that change the least. Clearing cache removes temporary files without signing you out. Uninstalling an unused app releases the space occupied by that installation, but you will need to install it again if you want it later. Only consider USB expansion after those two steps fail to create enough room.

1. Clear cached data
Google describes cache clearing as removal of temporary data. Its support guidance says: “Clearing your app cache only removes temporary data. You’ll remain signed in to your apps, and media will load faster.” The space recovered depends on how much temporary data your installed apps have accumulated.

- On the Google TV home screen, open your profile icon.
- Choose Settings.
- Open System > Storage > Internal shared storage.
- Select Cached data.
- Choose OK to confirm.
This is the best first move when you want to preserve your installed apps and their sign-in sessions. Cache contents can build up again, so the amount shown as available storage may change as apps run.
2. Uninstall apps you do not use
If cache clearing does not provide enough room, remove applications that are no longer needed. This is more consequential than clearing cache because the app itself is removed, but it does not require buying accessories.
- Open your profile icon on the Google TV home screen.
- Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps.
- Select an app you no longer use.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Select OK to confirm.
Work through the list deliberately rather than deleting everything at once. Keep apps you need for an imminent trip, presentation or accessibility setup, and remove the ones you can reinstall later. If you are unsure about an app, check its name and purpose before confirming; the uninstall screen is the point at which the app leaves the device.

3. Retry the system update on the TV
After cache cleanup or app removal, check for the update from Google TV’s own settings. Google says the update check is not presented in the Google Home app.
- From the Google TV home screen, choose All settings.
- Open System.
- Select About.
- Choose System update.
Google’s documented path is All settings > System > About > System update. If an update is offered, leave the device connected to power and allow the process to complete. A typical update takes about 10–12 minutes according to Google Support. During that period, the Chromecast is unavailable for casting.

Which storage fix fits your situation?
The choices differ in reversibility, cost and risk. Use the table to decide whether another cleanup pass is sensible or whether expansion is justified.
| Option | What changes | Reversibility | Immediacy | Cost | Setup and power | Data-loss risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clear cached data | Removes temporary app data; the amount recovered varies. | High. Apps can recreate cache as needed. | Immediate, using existing menus. | No accessory cost stated. | No additional hardware or power requirement. | Low; Google says you remain signed in. |
| Uninstall unused apps | Removes selected app installations and frees the space they occupy. | Moderate. You can install an app again later, but it is no longer present after confirmation. | Immediate after each uninstall. | No accessory cost stated. | No additional hardware or power requirement. | Higher than cache clearing because the app is removed. |
| USB storage expansion | Adds portable storage through a compatible USB-C hub. | Lower. The storage is configured for the device and can be reformatted. | Requires hardware connection and on-screen setup. | Accessory prices are not stated. | Requires a USB-C Power Delivery hub and a charger above 1.5 A / 7.5 W, plus USB 2.0-or-faster storage. | High during setup because Google prompts you to reformat the storage. |
Google’s official documentation does not give one universal minimum amount of free space that applies to every Chromecast with Google TV update. Do not treat any particular free-space number as a guaranteed threshold. If the update still refuses to start after the built-in cleanup steps, expansion is the documented next option.

Chromecast with Google TV can use portable storage when the connection supplies both data and adequate power. Google’s documented arrangement requires all of the following:
- A compatible USB-C hub with a Power Delivery (PD) port.
- A USB-C charger rated higher than 1.5 A / 7.5 W.
- Portable storage such as a USB flash drive or SD card.
- USB storage rated USB 2.0 or faster.
The hub is important because the Chromecast has to receive power while also communicating with the attached storage. A hub or switch that lacks suitable Power Delivery support can leave the device underpowered or prevent the storage setup from working as expected.
Prepare the storage before connecting it
Copy any files you need from the flash drive or SD card before using it with the Chromecast. During setup, Google says the device prompts you to reformat the storage. Reformatting normally erases existing contents, and the connected media should therefore be treated as expendable until the setup is complete.

Connect the components in a safe sequence
- Use a USB-C hub that has a Power Delivery port and supports USB 2.0 or faster storage connections.
- Connect the hub to the Chromecast with Google TV’s USB-C connection.
- Connect the USB-C charger to the hub’s Power Delivery port. The charger should be rated above 1.5 A / 7.5 W.
- Insert the compatible USB stick or SD-card reader into the hub.
- Follow the on-screen Google TV prompt to configure and reformat the storage.
The exact capacity you should choose depends on the media available to you; Google’s cited setup requirements specify the connection type and speed, not a universal storage size or a guaranteed amount of additional usable space. Do not assume that any USB-C adapter, hub or card reader will meet the Power Delivery requirement.
Check power before blaming storage
An update can fail or appear to hang when the Chromecast is not receiving stable power. Use the supplied power adapter and cable whenever possible. Google’s power troubleshooting guidance recommends a replacement adapter rated 5 V / 1.5 A when a replacement is necessary.
USB Type-C hubs and switches can change the available power and may not be compatible with the required Power Delivery behavior. If the Chromecast becomes unstable after adding a hub, verify that the charger is connected to the hub’s PD port, that its rating exceeds 1.5 A / 7.5 W for the documented storage setup, and that the hub is intended to pass power to the Chromecast.
Keep the device powered for the entire update. The normal duration is about 10–12 minutes, and casting is unavailable while the update runs. If the process takes substantially longer than that, check the network connection and the power path before repeatedly starting the update.

The storage warning remains after clearing cache
Cache is temporary data, so it may not release enough space by itself. Return to Settings > Apps > See all apps and uninstall applications you no longer need. Then run the update check again at All settings > System > About > System update.

You cannot find an update in Google Home
Use the Chromecast’s on-screen settings instead. The supported path is All settings > System > About > System update; Google says the update is not shown in the Google Home app.
The update appears stuck
Remember that Google’s typical duration is 10–12 minutes and the device cannot be cast to during that interval. If it runs far beyond that window, inspect the internet connection and confirm that the supplied or correctly rated replacement power adapter and cable are being used. A USB-C hub or switch may also affect power delivery.
USB storage will not configure
Confirm each documented requirement: the hub must have a Power Delivery port, the charger must be above 1.5 A / 7.5 W, and the storage must be USB 2.0 or faster. If the drive contains important files, stop before accepting the reformat prompt and make a backup elsewhere.
You are deciding whether to buy storage hardware
Try both built-in cleanup actions first. They cost nothing, require no change to the power setup and let you retry the update immediately. Buy a hub, charger and portable storage only when removing cache and unused apps does not leave enough room or when you need additional capacity beyond this update.
