Start with Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Storage to see what is taking up room. Review suggested files before removing anything, check app Recycle bins for items you may want back, and move files to another location only after confirming the destination. Menu names and available features vary by Galaxy model, country, and software version.
1. Find what is using storage
Open Settings and look for Device care or Battery and device care, then tap Storage. Note which categories use the most space and how much remains. Samsung says the available screens and settings vary by model and country. If you cannot find the path, search Settings for “Storage.”

Samsung’s Device care guidance explains the storage view. It notes that removing unnecessary images, videos, and audio recordings can free space, but you should decide which files are unnecessary.

2. Review cleanup suggestions before deleting
Where available, the Storage screen may identify large, duplicate, or unused files. Treat these as candidates to inspect, not files that are automatically safe to remove. Open each file and check its name, date, contents, and location. For duplicates, choose which copy to keep rather than deleting every match.

3. Check Recycle bins before emptying them
A file you deleted may still be recoverable in an app’s Recycle bin. Check the relevant app and restore anything you want to keep before choosing Delete, Delete All, or emptying a bin.

- My Files: Open My Files > Recycle bin, select a wanted item, and choose Restore.
- Gallery: Open Gallery > Menu > Recycle bin, select items to restore, and restore them before deleting or clearing the bin.
- Voice Recorder: Check its trash or Recycle bin if you have deleted recordings you may need.
Menu labels and Recycle bin availability can vary by model and software version. Samsung Canada says Gallery Bin items are automatically permanently deleted after 30 days; that stated period applies to Gallery Bin guidance, not necessarily to every app or Galaxy phone. 4. Move files you want to keep
If your exact Galaxy model supports expandable storage, moving files to a compatible microSD card can free internal storage without discarding those files. Samsung says most Galaxy smartphones offer an SD card option, but support depends on the model. Check your model’s specifications before buying or using a card.

- Open My Files and select the files you want to move.
- Choose Move, then select the SD card and the intended folder as the destination.
- Open the files from the destination to confirm they are accessible before removing any other copy.

5. Back up separately and verify before removing local copies
Samsung’s instructions describe Google Drive backup through Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data. A backup and freeing local storage are separate actions: backing up does not necessarily remove the phone’s local files. Check that the backup has completed and that important content is accessible before deleting its local copy. Google Drive backups use storage available with the Google Account. 6. Be cautious with app storage controls
If you use an app’s storage settings, distinguish Clear cache from Clear data or Clear storage. The latter options can affect information saved by the app. Do not clear app data unless you understand the consequences for that particular app; the available labels and behavior can vary across Galaxy versions.
