How to Free Up Storage on a Moto G When Apps and Photos Fill It Up

Start at Settings > Storage to see what is using space, then remove items in order of risk: downloads and offline media you can replace, apps you no longer use, and backed-up photo copies. Be careful with Clear storage and photo deletion: both can remove data you may not be able to restore.

Check what is using your Moto G’s storage

Open Settings > Storage and review the categories before deleting anything. Motorola documents this route for the Moto G Stylus 5G (2024), and Google gives it as the general Android starting point. Names and menus can differ by Moto G model and Android version; if you do not see Storage, search for “Storage” in Settings.

Look for the largest category and address that first. If photos and videos dominate, use the photo steps below. If apps or downloads take the most room, begin with those instead. The amount you can reclaim depends on what is on your phone.

Remove replaceable files before personal data

Review Downloads and files saved for offline use by music, video, maps, or other apps. Delete only items you can download again or no longer need. If an app created the files, its own download or offline-content controls may be the safest place to remove them.

If you want to keep files but not on the phone, copy them to a computer over USB, confirm the copies open there, and then remove the phone copies. Google’s Android guidance describes transferring files and folders this way; whether the exact steps vary depends on the device and computer.

Free space used by apps

Uninstall apps you do not use

Uninstalling removes the app and its local data. You may be able to install it again later, but information stored only on the phone may not return unless the app synced or backed it up. Check the app’s account or backup options first if its data matters.

Clear cache only when temporary files are the problem

For an unusually large app, check its own cleanup controls first. Android settings may also offer Clear cache, which removes temporary data; an app may load more slowly the next time you use it while it rebuilds that data.

Use Clear storage cautiously

Clear storage (sometimes labeled Clear data) is not the same as clearing cache. It permanently removes the app’s local data and may make you sign in or set the app up again. Use it only when you understand what will be erased and have protected anything important.

Check whether app archiving is available

Some supported Android devices can automatically archive eligible apps: the app is removed while personal app data is saved and its icon remains. The app can be downloaded again from Google Play if it is still available. This depends on Android and device support, so treat it as an optional feature rather than a control every Moto G has.

Free local space from photos without deleting the backed-up library

Confirm backup is complete first

Open Google Photos and check the backup status at the top of the library. Do not use its free-space action until it says backup is complete for the photos and videos you want to keep. If backup is still running or has failed, deleting local originals can leave you without a backed-up copy.

Use Free up space on this device

  1. In Google Photos, tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Free up space on this device.
  3. Review the amount Google Photos says it can free, then confirm only if the backup is complete and you are comfortable removing those local copies.

This action removes qualifying copies from the phone; it does not delete the backed-up copies in your Google Photos library. Those copies remain viewable in Google Photos or at photos.google.com while you are signed in. You need an internet connection to view cloud copies, and they may no longer appear in the phone’s built-in Gallery or be available offline. Google notes that photos and videos less than 30 days old may remain on the device.

Google Photos warns, “This feature deletes photos from your device.” That is different from deleting a photo inside Google Photos. Motorola’s guides for the Moto G (2025), Moto G Power (2025), and Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) say that deleting in Google Photos can also delete the Google Account copy when backup is enabled. Before confirming any deletion, check the action label and backup state. Items in Trash may be recoverable in some cases, but permanent deletion, emptying Trash, or deleting without a backup can make restoration impossible.

Set up automatic photo cleanup if your model offers it

Motorola documents a Settings > Storage > Storage manager option for the Moto G (2025), Moto G Power (2025), and Moto G Stylus 5G (2024). On those models, it can remove backed-up photos and videos from internal storage after 30, 60, or 90 days. These intervals are documented for those specific models, not guaranteed across the Moto G range. If your phone has Storage manager, review its settings and ensure photo backup is working before enabling automatic removal.

Choose a cleanup method that fits the risk

Action What it can free Data risk and access afterward
Delete replaceable downloads or offline media The selected local files Files are gone from the phone; you need the source app, account, or computer to download or retrieve them again.
Uninstall an unused app The app and its local data Local app data may not return on reinstall unless synced or backed up. Reinstallation depends on app availability.
Clear cache Temporary app data Lower risk than clearing storage; the app may rebuild temporary files or load more slowly next time.
Clear storage or data The app’s local data Permanent removal of local app data; you may need to sign in or set the app up again.
Google Photos: Free up space on this device Qualifying local photo and video copies after backup Cloud copies remain in Google Photos; viewing them requires account access and connectivity, and they may not be available offline or in the built-in Gallery.
Copy files to a computer, then delete phone copies The selected local files Check that the computer copies are intact first; later access requires that computer or another copy.

Phone storage and Google Account storage are different

Removing local files can make room on the Moto G, but it does not increase your Google Account quota. Google Photos storage is shared with Google Drive and Gmail. If photo backup is stuck because the account is full, check Google Photos Settings > Backup > Manage storage and your account usage. Cleaning account storage can help backups resume, but it does not directly free internal phone storage.
