Then review large files and Downloads in My Files, remove apps you no longer use, and back up anything important before deleting its phone copy. Samsung does not specify one free-space requirement for every Galaxy model and software update, so use the requirement shown by your phone.
1. See what is using storage
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care or Battery and device care.
- Tap Storage, then review the categories and inspect items before removing them.
Check the largest categories first. Samsung says you may be able to identify duplicate, large, or unused files from this area. Menu names, screens, and available controls vary by model and software version.

2. Remove files you recognize and no longer need
Review Downloads and other files
Open My Files > Downloads and select only files you no longer need. Also look for large videos, duplicate files, and saved media in folders you recognize. Check a file before deleting it; a folder name alone may not tell you whether its contents are important.
Check Gallery Trash
Deleted Gallery screenshots may remain in Trash rather than being removed immediately. Samsung’s instructions say to empty Gallery Trash to completely remove those deleted items. Review its contents first, because emptying Trash removes your chance to restore them from there.

3. Uninstall unused apps and review message cleanup
Uninstall apps you recognize and no longer use. If an app cannot be uninstalled, your phone may offer a Disable option instead; this is not the same as removing its files from storage.
Samsung also documents an optional Messages setting that automatically deletes older messages once the phone reaches 200 total messages or 20 multimedia messages. Consider what conversations or attachments you may want to keep before enabling it. This is a cleanup threshold, not a promised amount of space recovered.

4. Back up personal files before deleting their phone copies
If you want to keep pictures, videos, or documents while making room, Samsung describes backing them up with Smart Switch to external storage. Options it lists include a microSD card, USB flash drive, or SSD. USB storage may require an OTG adapter, and the supported storage and connector depend on the Galaxy model.

- Use Smart Switch to back up the files you want to preserve.
- Open the destination and verify that the important files are present and readable.
- Only then delete the phone copies you no longer need.
Moving or backing up files does not necessarily free internal storage until the original phone copies are removed. You do not need to buy external storage if ordinary cleanup gives you enough room.

5. Retry the software update
Return to Settings > Software update and try again; the exact menu wording can vary. Follow the space requirement or instructions shown on your device rather than relying on a generic figure: Samsung identifies insufficient storage as a possible update problem, but its cited support guidance does not establish one free-space threshold for every Galaxy phone and update.
If the on-device update still fails
Samsung US documents an alternative when an update is available: install Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac, connect the Galaxy phone, and follow the on-screen update prompt. Keep the cable connected until the update finishes. Smart Switch is an alternative route, not a guarantee that every failed update will be resolved.

Back up important data before attempting recovery or a factory reset after an update failure. Samsung warns that stored data can be lost during these actions.
Storage cleanup is different from Memory cleanup
Samsung’s Memory cleanup stops background apps; it is not the same as freeing storage by removing files or apps. Avoid clearing app data as a routine cleanup shortcut: it can erase an app’s local state, and Samsung’s storage guidance instead focuses on selected files and unused apps.
