How to Free Up Storage Before Installing a HyperOS Update

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free space for a HyperOS update is not just the size shown beside the download button. Xiaomi says the phone downloads the package and then extracts it locally, so the process can need more than twice the package size; a larger update may require more than 15 GB available. That 15 GB figure is not a universal minimum for every phone or update.

Start by checking storage, then use Xiaomi’s Storage, Cleaner and Deep clean tools to remove only files and apps you have reviewed. Protect important photos and documents before deleting anything. Once enough working space is available, return to the HyperOS update screen and retry the installation.

Why a HyperOS update needs more space than its download

An update package is first saved on the phone and then unpacked locally before the new system can be installed. Xiaomi Global Support describes the process this way: “During the update, the update package must first be downloaded and then extracted locally, a process that requires more than twice the size of the update package itself.” See Xiaomi’s explanation of insufficient storage during system updates (publication date not shown; accessed 2026-10-13).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That temporary working space is in addition to the space already occupied by Android, HyperOS, apps, photos, videos, downloads and cached data. After the update finishes, some temporary files may be removed, but the phone still needs enough free space to complete the download and extraction safely.

How much free space should you aim for?

Guidance What it means
More than twice the package size Xiaomi’s general explanation of the working space needed to download and extract an update.
More than 15 GB for larger updates A possibility Xiaomi mentions for larger packages, not a required minimum for every HyperOS device.

The exact requirement depends on the package, your model, the installed software and the space already occupied by system files. Do not treat 15 GB as a universal threshold, and do not assume that a phone showing a package of a particular size needs exactly twice that amount. Use Xiaomi’s estimate as a safety margin, then follow the storage warning shown on your own device.

For perspective, if a hypothetical package were 6 GB, “more than twice” means more than 12 GB of working room, not merely 6 GB. That arithmetic is an illustration of Xiaomi’s rule, not a prediction of the size of your update. The update screen and the phone’s own warning remain the most relevant indicators.

Before you clean: identify the right storage figure

Check internal storage, not RAM. Internal storage is where photos, videos, apps, downloads, installation packages and cached data live. RAM is working memory used while apps and processes run. Xiaomi distinguishes these functions in its Phone Storage/RAM FAQ. Closing recent apps or using a RAM-clearing command will not create the internal storage needed for an update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the free-space figure before making changes. This gives you a baseline and helps you tell whether a cleanup actually recovered room. If the number barely changes, a large item may still be selected, a download may be continuing in the background, or the phone may not have emptied a trash area yet.

Check storage before deleting anything

First establish what is consuming space. Menu names vary by model, region and HyperOS version, so one route may not appear exactly as written on your phone.

Use the Storage screen

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About phone.
  3. Open Storage.
  4. Use Clear if that control is available, and review the categories and suggestions before confirming anything.

Xiaomi’s UK support instructions document this route in its low-storage guidance. The screen should help you identify whether videos, applications, downloads or other files are the largest contributors. Some phones expose the same destination through a differently named storage card or a Settings search result.

Run Cleaner, then inspect Deep clean

  1. Open the Security app.
  2. Tap Cleaner.
  3. Choose Clean up and examine the proposed items.
  4. From Security, open Deep clean for a more detailed list.

Xiaomi’s storage FAQs say Deep clean can suggest videos, infrequently used apps, installation packages, app data and large files. The suggestions are not an instruction to erase everything: open each category, inspect the individual entries and select only items you are prepared to lose. See Xiaomi’s Phone Storage/RAM FAQ and the UK cleanup instructions.

A quick preparation checklist

  • Write down the current free-storage number.
  • Connect the phone to a reliable charger if the battery is low.
  • Make sure you know which photos, videos, documents and recordings must be retained.
  • Verify that an existing backup can actually be opened, rather than assuming that a sync completed.
  • Have a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection ready for a new download.

These steps prevent a rushed deletion when the update warning appears. Xiaomi’s pages identify the cleanup targets, while checking copies and charging conditions is prudent preparation for your own files and device.

What you can usually remove safely

“Safe” depends on whether you still need the file or app. A cleanup tool can identify candidates, but only you can decide whether a recording, download or app contains something worth keeping.

Large videos and other media

Open the list of large files and videos and check each item’s thumbnail, location and date. Move a file to another location or make a separate copy before deleting it. For photos, videos and documents that matter, verify that a backup exists and that you can open it before removing the phone’s copy. Xiaomi’s cited pages identify large media as a cleanup target but do not prescribe a complete backup method.

Pay particular attention to camera exports, screen recordings, messaging-app media and offline videos. A filename that looks generic or an old date does not prove that a file is disposable. If you cannot identify an item, leave it in place until you can.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Downloads and installation packages

Old downloads, exported videos and installation packages can remain after you have finished using them. Check the filename and folder before deleting. An installation package may be needed to reinstall an app without downloading it again, while a downloaded document may be the only copy you have.

If the update itself has already downloaded an incomplete package, do not remove random files from a file manager. Use the update screen or an official cleanup listing to identify the package. Xiaomi’s troubleshooting guidance for the Xiaomi 14T Pro says an incomplete or corrupted package may need to be redownloaded.

Apps you no longer use

Deep clean can list infrequently used apps. Uninstall games, tools or trial apps that you recognize and no longer need. Before removing an app, check whether it stores unsynced documents, offline maps, recordings or other data locally. If you may need it later, confirm that the account and data can be restored after reinstalling.

Removing an app can free both the application and some associated data, but the exact amount varies. Do not uninstall a system component merely because its name is unfamiliar. Focus on apps you installed and recognize.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cached files

Cached data is temporary information an app can recreate, so clearing a cache can recover space without uninstalling the app. Use the app’s own storage controls or the item selected by Xiaomi’s Cleaner, and read the confirmation dialog carefully. Do not select an option that says it will erase app data, downloads or account information unless you intend to reset that app.

Review before the final confirmation

  • Keep personal photos, videos, documents and recordings unless you have a usable copy elsewhere.
  • Check dates and filenames; a file that looks old may still be important.
  • Do not bulk-delete an entire category without opening its contents.
  • Distinguish clearing a cache from clearing app data.
  • After deleting, empty any trash or recycle area if the phone uses one and you need the space immediately.

Storage is not the same as RAM

Internal storage holds apps and files. RAM is working memory used to run apps and processes. Xiaomi distinguishes these functions in its storage and RAM FAQ. Closing recent apps or using a RAM-clearing command does not remove photos, downloads, cached files or installation packages from internal storage. For an update warning, target the Storage figure and the files occupying it, not the amount of RAM shown in the phone’s specifications.

Stop automatic system downloads from consuming space

If free space keeps falling after cleanup, an automatically downloaded system package may be occupying storage. Xiaomi’s support article for the Redmi 13C 5G warns that automatic system downloads over Wi-Fi can fill storage over time and recommends checking available space regularly. That article is device-specific, so the same control may be named or placed differently on your phone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About phone.
  3. Select Xiaomi HyperOS.
  4. Tap the three-dot menu.
  5. Open Update settings and review the automatic-download option if your model provides it.

Use the equivalent setting on another Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO model rather than assuming every device has the Redmi 13C 5G layout. The device-specific instructions are at Xiaomi’s automatic-download support page. If you turn off an automatic-download option, you can still check for updates manually from the HyperOS screen when you have prepared enough space.

Reach the HyperOS update controls and retry

After cleanup, return to the update screen:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About phone (or About tablet).
  3. Tap the Xiaomi HyperOS icon or update entry.
  4. Use the three-dot menu for additional update settings, if needed.

Xiaomi documents this path for phones and tablets in its HyperOS additional-settings instructions. Check the available-storage figure again, start the download and leave the phone on a stable connection while it completes. Avoid starting a large download while another cleanup or file transfer is still running.

If the update is still stuck

A failed attempt does not necessarily mean that the cleanup was ineffective. Xiaomi’s troubleshooting page for the Xiaomi 14T Pro lists insufficient storage, network conditions and battery abnormalities as possible causes. The cited procedure is for that model; the same categories are useful checks on other devices, but menus and behavior can differ.

Storage warning remains

  • Reopen Settings > About phone > Storage and confirm that the free-space number actually increased.
  • Look in Deep clean for a large installation package or media file that was not selected during the first pass.
  • Check whether a trash or recycle area is still holding deleted files.
  • Restart the phone, then check storage again before retrying.
  • Remember that the update may need temporary working space beyond the package’s displayed download size.

Download stops or fails on a network

Switch to a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection that you know is reliable, and avoid interrupting the download. A connection that drops can leave an incomplete package on the phone. Xiaomi’s 14T Pro guidance recommends continuing the download after freeing space and changing to a stable network when network conditions are involved; see the model-specific troubleshooting page.

The package may be incomplete or corrupted

If the download repeatedly stops at the same point or the phone reports a package problem, delete the incomplete package only when the update screen or storage tool identifies it, then start a fresh download. Do not remove unrelated system files from a file manager. Xiaomi’s troubleshooting guidance advises redownloading an incomplete or corrupted package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery or charging behavior is abnormal

Use the phone under normal charging conditions and follow any battery warning shown on screen. The 14T Pro support page includes battery abnormality among possible reasons for a stuck update, so resolve that warning before attempting another installation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Moving files instead of deleting them

If a video or document is important but temporarily occupying too much space, move it off the phone before the update and restore it later. A computer or a cloud-storage service can provide that extra location, but verify the copy and its accessibility first.

The built-in Storage, Cleaner and Deep clean tools do not require a paid app or accessory. A cloud service may involve a subscription or storage limit, so check its current terms yourself; Xiaomi’s support pages do not endorse a particular provider.

A USB-C flash drive may also help, but compatibility is not universal. Before buying or connecting one, confirm that your exact phone supports USB On-The-Go (USB OTG), that the connector fits, and that the drive’s file-system format is supported. Xiaomi’s cited guidance does not validate a particular accessory or promise that every HyperOS device will recognize an external drive.

A practical cleanup sequence

Use this order when the update is waiting for space:

  1. Record the current free-storage figure in Settings > About phone > Storage.
  2. Back up or separately copy important photos, videos and documents, then verify the copies.
  3. Run Security > Cleaner > Clean up and inspect every proposed selection.
  4. Open Security > Deep clean and review large videos, large files, old installation packages, infrequently used apps and app data one item at a time.
  5. Clear appropriate app caches, taking care not to choose an app-data reset accidentally.
  6. Check for automatic system-download settings under the HyperOS update menu if storage keeps disappearing.
  7. Restart the phone, recheck available storage and connect to a stable network.
  8. Open Settings > About phone/tablet > Xiaomi HyperOS and retry the update.

Menu labels and available controls can change with the model, region and HyperOS version. If a route is missing, use the phone’s Settings search for “Storage,” “Cleaner,” “Deep clean” or “Update settings,” then confirm that the destination is an official system screen.

What not to do

  • Do not assume that 15 GB is mandatory for every update.
  • Do not confuse a RAM booster with storage cleanup.
  • Do not delete photos, recordings or documents before verifying another copy.
  • Do not erase app data when you intended to clear only a cache.
  • Do not remove unfamiliar system files manually.
  • Do not assume a USB-C drive works without checking OTG, connector and format compatibility.
  • Do not repeatedly retry a download over an unstable connection while storage is nearly full.

Key points to remember

  • The update package is downloaded and extracted locally, so the process can require more than twice its package size.
  • Xiaomi says larger updates may need over 15 GB free, but that is not a universal requirement.
  • Use Storage, Cleaner and Deep clean to find candidates; do not delete blindly.
  • Protect important files before removing media or app data.
  • RAM cleanup does not create the internal storage needed for an update.
  • Automatic system downloads can consume space over time on some models.
  • If the retry fails, check storage, network stability, incomplete downloads and battery warnings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Xiaomi phone say there is not enough storage when the update download is smaller?

The package is downloaded and then extracted locally. Xiaomi says the process can require more than twice the package size, so the phone needs temporary working room in addition to the download itself.

How much free space does a HyperOS update require?

There is no single amount for every model. Xiaomi gives general guidance of more than twice the package size and says larger updates may require over 15 GB available. Treat 15 GB as a qualified possibility, not a universal minimum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can I delete safely before updating?

Review large videos and files, old downloads, installation packages, unused apps and suitable cached files. Inspect each item first, and preserve anything important or any app data that is not backed up.

Will clearing RAM fix an insufficient-storage warning?

No. RAM runs apps and processes; internal storage holds files and apps. Closing apps or clearing RAM does not remove stored photos, downloads or update packages.

Where are Xiaomi’s cleanup tools?

Depending on the model, use Settings > About phone > Storage > Clear, or Security > Cleaner > Clean up and Security > Deep clean. Labels can vary by region and HyperOS version.

Why does storage keep decreasing after I clean it?

An automatic system download may be using space. On some models, review Settings > About phone > Xiaomi HyperOS > three-dot menu > Update settings. The exact option is device-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the update download is stuck?

Confirm that storage increased, use a stable network, and check for an incomplete or corrupted package. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 14T Pro guidance also lists battery abnormalities as a possible factor.

Do I need a paid cleaner app or a USB drive?

No paid app is required; Xiaomi’s built-in tools handle the basic cleanup. A computer, cloud storage or USB-C drive can temporarily hold important files, but verify copies and check USB OTG compatibility before relying on an external drive.

The Bottom Line

Free enough room for the download and local extraction, not just the number beside the update. Check Storage, review Cleaner and Deep clean suggestions item by item, protect important files, and then retry from the Xiaomi HyperOS update screen on a stable connection. Xiaomi’s “over 15 GB” comment applies to some larger updates, not every device.
