To reclaim the space immediately, open Steam’s Library, right-click the installed demo, choose Manage → Uninstall, and confirm. Steam removes the demo’s local files; Steamworks also states that an uninstalled demo is automatically removed from your library. If the drive is still too full, use Steam → Settings → Storage to add another library location and move larger games there.
Uninstall the demo through Steam
Removing one demo is a narrowly scoped operation. It deletes that demo’s installed files without touching your other games, and you can download the demo again later if it remains available. Use Steam’s own control rather than deleting a folder manually, because Steam needs to update its library record as well as remove the files.

Before you start
- Close the demo and wait for any save or cloud-synchronization activity to finish.
- Make sure you have selected the demo rather than the full game or a similarly named test build.
- If the demo contains progress you may want later, check its save behavior before removing it from your account.
1. Find the installed demo
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Use the search box or your library filters to locate the demo that occupies the drive.
- Confirm that the demo is installed. An installed title normally shows a play or launch control rather than an install control.
- If you have more than one Steam library, open the title’s properties or management view and note which location contains it. This helps you check the correct drive after removal.
2. Choose Manage and Uninstall
- Right-click the demo’s entry. On a controller or in a compact library layout, open the title’s management menu instead.
- Select Manage, then Uninstall.
- Accept Steam’s confirmation prompt and wait for the uninstall to finish before closing Steam.
Steamworks documents the same management menu for account cleanup: Manage → Remove from account explicitly removes a demo from the account. That command is different from simply deleting a shortcut. Steamworks also says that when a demo is uninstalled, it is automatically removed from the library.
3. Check the recovered capacity
After Steam finishes, check the free-space indicator in your operating system or in Steam’s Storage view. The amount recovered equals the demo’s installed footprint, which can differ from the size shown on the store page because the store figure describes a download or a requirement rather than the final files on disk.

Uninstall versus remove from account
These two commands solve different problems. Uninstall is the storage operation: it removes the local installation. Remove from account is the account and library operation: Steamworks describes it as explicitly removing the demo from your account, and an uninstalled demo is automatically removed from the library.
If your only goal is disk space, uninstall first and leave the account entry alone when Steam offers that choice. Keeping the account association can make it easier to find and redownload the demo later, assuming the publisher still makes it available. If you never want the demo listed again, use the explicit account-removal command after considering saves and future access.

When uninstalling one demo does not free enough space
A demo may be only one part of the capacity problem. Instead of uninstalling the Steam client or randomly deleting folders, use Steam’s Storage Manager to see which library locations contain installed games and to relocate the largest installations.
Open the Storage Manager
- In Steam, open Steam → Settings.
- Select Storage. In some client versions, this appears under the downloads or storage-related settings area; use the Storage entry shown by your current client.
- Review each listed library location and the installed titles associated with it.
- Compare the listed libraries with the drive that is reporting low capacity. A demo on one drive cannot explain a full second drive.
Add another library folder
- From the Storage screen, choose the control for adding a drive or library folder.
- Select an available internal drive or a connected external drive.
- Create or select a Steam library folder on that drive and let Steam register it as an installation location.
- Wait until Steam shows the new location as available before beginning a move or a new download.
Steam Support describes the Steam library folder as the place where installed games are stored and documents adding another library location from the Storage tab. Keep the new drive connected and mounted whenever you plan to launch titles stored there.

Move an installed game
- In the Storage Manager, select the library that currently contains the game.
- Mark one or more large games and choose the move option.
- Pick the newly added library folder as the destination and start the transfer.
- Wait for Steam to verify the move before launching the game or disconnecting the destination drive.
Moving a full game preserves its local installation while creating capacity on the original drive. It is therefore more reversible than uninstalling: you avoid a later download, but you must keep the destination drive available. Moving a larger title may recover substantially more room than removing several small demos, while still leaving those games installed.

Using a portable external SSD
A portable external SSD is an optional way to provide the second Steam library that Storage Manager requires. It is not needed to uninstall a demo. It becomes useful when your internal drive repeatedly runs out of room or when you want to keep larger games installed without replacing the internal disk.
- Connect the SSD before adding its library folder in Steam’s Storage settings.
- Use a reliable cable and a port that can sustain the drive’s connection; an interrupted transfer can require Steam to verify files again.
- Do not disconnect the SSD while a game stored on it is running or while Steam is moving files.
- If the drive receives a different operating-system mount or drive letter, Steam may ask you to locate the library again before the titles become playable.
- Keep enough free capacity for the installations you intend to move; an almost-full destination will not solve the underlying storage problem.
Because no particular capacity, speed, price, or model is established here, choose an SSD based on the number and size of games you intend to keep and verify its current specifications before buying. The hardware adds a purchase cost and a cable-and-port dependency, but it avoids repeatedly downloading games after every cleanup.
Clear Download Cache is not demo removal
Steam’s Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache command addresses cached download and configuration data. It is useful when downloads stall, updates behave incorrectly, or Steam’s download state appears inconsistent. It is not the normal method for deleting an installed demo.
- Open Steam → Settings → Downloads.
- Choose Clear Download Cache and confirm.
- Sign in again if Steam requests your credentials.
- Return to the Library and uninstall the demo through Manage → Uninstall if the goal is to remove its installed files.
Clearing the cache should not be presented as a substitute for uninstalling. It can remove cached download data while leaving installed games and demos in their library folders. It may recover some temporary space, but the result is not the demo’s installed footprint and should not be confused with a title uninstall.

Do not uninstall Steam to remove one demo
Uninstalling the Steam application is a system-wide operation, not a single-title cleanup. Steam Support warns that the process removes Steam and any installed game content from the machine. Use the demo’s own uninstall command when only that demo is the problem.

If Steam itself must be reinstalled
When a repair or complete reinstall is genuinely necessary, protect existing installations first:
- Exit Steam completely, including the Steam icon in the operating system notification area.
- Locate the Steam installation directory.
- Move the
steamappsfolder outside that directory, or copy it to another safe location. - Reinstall Steam, then close it before restoring the preserved
steamappsfolder to the appropriate library location. - Start Steam and allow it to discover or verify the existing files.
Steam’s guidance specifically recommends moving steamapps when preserving installations during a reinstall. Do not treat this as a guarantee that every configuration file, mod, or save will be restored; preserve anything important separately. For a single demo, this extra risk and effort are unnecessary.
Check saves before removing a demo from the account
Steamworks notes that demo saves may share cloud storage with the full application. A demo can therefore have progress or settings that are relevant if you later purchase or install the complete game. Before using Manage → Remove from account, check the game’s own save behavior and decide whether any local or cloud data matters to you.

- If you only need local disk space, use Manage → Uninstall and leave the account entry available when possible.
- If you want the demo gone from the account and library, use the explicit remove-from-account command after considering its save behavior.
- Do not assume that uninstalling local files erases every cloud record, or that removing the account entry preserves every local setting.
- If progress matters, record where the game stores it and make any backup the game or Steam provides before account removal.
Which storage action fits your situation?
| Action | Space recovered now | What happens to local files | Reversibility | Risk to other content | Convenience |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall the demo | The demo’s installed footprint | Steam removes that demo’s files | Redownload later if still available | Limited to the selected demo | Fastest and simplest |
| Remove the demo from the account | Any local installation must still be uninstalled | The account/library entry is explicitly removed; check save behavior first | Depends on the demo’s availability and account options | Scoped to that demo, but account removal is more permanent than an uninstall | Useful only when you also want account cleanup |
| Move larger games with Storage Manager | Space equal to the moved installations on the original drive | Files remain on the destination library | Move them back or use the destination drive | Other games remain installed, but the destination must stay available | Requires another registered library and a completed transfer |
| Clear Download Cache | Cached download/configuration data only | Installed games and demos remain installed | Steam rebuilds cache data as needed | Low; you may need to sign in again | Best for download problems, not cleanup |
| Uninstall Steam | Potentially all Steam-installed content | Steam and installed game content can be removed | Requires reinstalling and restoring or redownloading content | Highest; it can affect every installed game | Last resort, never a one-demo shortcut |
Troubleshoot a drive that is still full
The demo still appears in the Library
Wait for the uninstall operation to complete, restart Steam, and check the Storage view again. If the title is still installed, repeat the title’s Manage menu and confirm that you selected Uninstall, not only a shortcut or account-management option. A library listing and an installed copy are related but are not the same check.
Free space barely changed
Open the operating system’s storage view and Steam’s Settings → Storage screen. Identify which library contains the largest remaining installations, then move one or more of those games to another registered library. Removing a small demo cannot reclaim space occupied by a much larger game elsewhere on the drive.
Steam keeps downloading or the download state looks wrong
Use Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache, sign in again if prompted, and retry the download. Return to the normal uninstall workflow for removing the demo itself; cache clearing and file removal solve different problems.

Steam cannot find a moved game
Reconnect the destination drive, confirm that its library folder is listed under Settings → Storage, and let Steam verify the installation. Avoid deleting the library folder while Steam is trying to locate it. If the operating system assigned a new mount point or drive letter, restore the original connection or reselect the registered library.
You are considering a full Steam reinstall
Stop and preserve the steamapps folder first. Steam warns that uninstalling the client can remove installed game content, so a reinstall should be the last resort for a single-demo storage problem.
A practical cleanup sequence
For most readers, the safest order is straightforward. First uninstall the demo through its Manage menu. Second, verify the free-space change in both Steam and the operating system if the numbers seem surprising. Third, inspect Storage Manager for larger games on the same drive. Fourth, add another internal or external library and move selected titles if you need capacity without downloading them again. Use Clear Download Cache only when Steam’s download behavior is the problem. Consider account removal only after checking save implications.
This sequence separates reversible, title-level cleanup from broader maintenance. It also avoids paying for hardware unless the internal drive remains inadequate after you have removed the demo and reviewed the installed library.
A safe cleanup checklist
- Close the demo and allow any save or cloud activity to finish.
- Use Library → Manage → Uninstall for the installed demo.
- Confirm recovered capacity in the operating system or Steam Storage view.
- Use Settings → Storage to add another library and move large games when one demo is not enough.
- Keep a destination drive connected whenever you launch games stored there.
- Use Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache only for cache or download problems.
- Check the demo’s local and cloud-save behavior before removing it from your account.
- Never uninstall Steam casually; preserve
steamappsbefore a necessary reinstall.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I uninstall a Steam demo and get the space back?
Open Library, right-click the installed demo, choose Manage, select Uninstall, and confirm. Wait for Steam to finish, then check your operating system’s free-space indicator or Steam’s Storage view.

Can I move Steam games to an external SSD?
Yes. Connect the portable SSD, add a library folder for it under Steam → Settings → Storage, and use the move option for selected games. Keep the SSD connected when launching those games and during transfers.
Does clearing Steam’s download cache delete installed games?
No. Clear Download Cache addresses cached download and configuration data. It is not the normal demo-uninstall workflow, and installed games and demos can remain in their library folders.
Will uninstalling Steam delete my games?
Steam Support warns that uninstalling Steam removes Steam and installed game content from the machine. Do not use it to remove one demo. If a full reinstall is unavoidable, move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I remove a demo from my Steam account after uninstalling it?
Only if you also want the account and library entry removed. Steamworks says demos can be explicitly removed with Manage → Remove from account. Check local and cloud-save behavior first because demo saves may share storage with the full application.
The Bottom Line
Use Manage → Uninstall on the demo, verify the reclaimed space, and use Settings → Storage to move larger games when needed. Clear Download Cache for download problems, not file removal, and never uninstall Steam casually when a single-demo cleanup is all you need.
