If your Apple TV says it is low on storage, open Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage and remove the largest apps you no longer need. Choose Offload to remove an app while keeping its data, or Delete to remove both the app and its data.
The word “downloads” can describe two different things. Apple TV 4K stores apps locally, while movies and shows downloaded to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or Android device are stored on that other device—not automatically on the Apple TV.

What actually uses storage on Apple TV?
Apple’s storage guidance describes the basic distinction: “Your Apple TV 4K streams video and music, but it stores apps locally.” The apps installed on the Apple TV therefore account for the reclaimable space shown in its storage-management screen. Streaming a film or song does not create a permanent library of downloaded video on the Apple TV in the way a phone or tablet can.
Start with the Apple TV itself rather than deleting items at random. The device can show each installed app and the amount of storage assigned to it. That list is the most reliable way to decide what to remove because it reflects your hardware and your current app installation.

These instructions are for Apple TV 4K. Apple notes that features and content can differ by Apple TV model, tvOS version, and region. If a menu name or location does not match what you see, identify the model and installed tvOS version before trying an alternative path.

Check which apps are taking the most room
Use Manage Storage before deciding whether an app should be offloaded or deleted. The list gives you an evidence-based target and lets you preserve smaller apps that are not contributing materially to the warning.

- Choose General.
- Move down to Usage.
- Choose Manage Storage.
- Review the apps shown and the storage amount displayed for each one.
Select an app only after checking that you recognize it and understand what you may lose. A rarely used app that occupies substantial space is a logical candidate. An app containing a profile, local preferences, or progress may be better suited to offloading than deletion if you want to keep that information.
Do not assume that the first app in the list is the largest or that a particular category always consumes the most space. Apple does not publish a universal app-size ranking for Apple TV; use the values shown on your own Manage Storage screen.
Offload or delete? The decision that determines what you keep
Apple presents two different outcomes. The app package is removed in both cases, but the treatment of its data differs. Use this table before confirming the action.

Some apps and content providers require you to sign in. Even after an app is downloaded again, you may need to authenticate or complete setup, particularly after deleting it. Free space while keeping an app’s data: Offload it
Offload one app from Manage Storage
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Go to General > Usage > Manage Storage.
- Locate the app you want to remove.
- Select the trash-control icon beside the app.
- Choose Offload and confirm.
Offloading removes the installed app while retaining its data. The app’s icon stays available and shows a download icon. When you select that icon later, Apple TV can download the app again, provided the app is still available in the App Store. Availability is not a promise that every app will remain downloadable indefinitely, so do not treat offloading as a permanent backup.
Turn on automatic offloading for unused apps
If you would rather let Apple TV reclaim app space when apps have not been used, open Settings > Apps > Offload Unused Apps and enable the option. Apple’s automatic behavior keeps the unused app icon available for redownload while removing the installed app. Restoration still depends on the app remaining available in the App Store.

Automatic offloading is useful on a shared television where people install many apps but use only a few regularly. It is less suitable when an app must be ready for an offline moment or when another household member expects every app to open immediately. The setting changes the installed-app state; it does not create extra storage or move the app to external media.
Remove an app and its data: Delete it
Delete from Manage Storage
- Open Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage.
- Find the app in the storage list.
- Select the trash-control icon beside it.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
Deletion removes the app and all of its data. That can include information you would otherwise have kept for a future reinstall, so use this option only when losing the app’s local data is acceptable. Apple says a purchased app can be downloaded again without repurchasing, but the data may not be restored.

You can also act directly on an app icon:
- Navigate to the app on the Home Screen.
- Press and hold the remote’s clickpad or touch surface until the app options appear.
- Select Delete App.
- Choose Delete or Offload, depending on whether you want to remove the app’s data.
The Home Screen route uses the same underlying choices as Manage Storage. If your priority is identifying the largest space users first, use Manage Storage; if you already know which app you want to remove, the Home Screen route is quicker.
What “downloads” means on Apple TV—and what it does not mean
Downloads made on another device
People often see an offline movie or episode in the Apple TV app on an iPhone or iPad and assume the same download is occupying Apple TV storage. Apple’s Apple TV app library guidance says living-room devices can watch and share family purchases but cannot download, import, or hide purchases in that library. Its download instructions apply to computers and mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and Android.
That means a movie downloaded to an iPhone, iPad, computer, or Android device consumes space on that device. It is not evidence that the Apple TV hardware has a corresponding offline copy. Manage the download on the device where it was created.
Apple describes this distinction in Manage your library in the Apple TV app.
Downloads inside a third-party streaming app
A streaming service may use the word “download” for an app-specific feature, but the Apple instructions cited here do not establish a universal download folder or a single cleanup screen for every third-party app on Apple TV. Do not look for a system-wide “delete all downloads” command unless the particular app documents one.
When someone reports that “downloads” filled Apple TV, ask these questions:
- Was the item downloaded on the Apple TV hardware, or on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or Android device?
- Which app created the download?
- Does the item appear in Apple TV’s Manage Storage list, or only inside another device’s app?
- Is the complaint about an installed app that needs updating, rather than an offline video?
If the item is not represented by an installed app in Manage Storage, the cited Apple guidance does not provide a general Apple TV cleanup path for it. Follow the download-management controls in the app and on the device that actually stored the file.

Choose the safest action for common situations
You need room to install or update one app
Open Manage Storage and compare the displayed space amounts. Offload an infrequently used large app first if you may want its data later. If no longer-needed apps are available, delete one whose local data you can afford to lose. After making the change, return to the installation or update you were attempting; the storage list is the authoritative check on what the Apple TV has reclaimed.
You want to keep a child’s profile or household settings
Prefer Offload when the app’s data is important. Deleting removes that data, and Apple warns it may not return after a later download. Tell other household members before enabling automatic offloading if immediate access to every installed app matters to them.
You are finished with an app permanently
Delete it rather than offloading it. This removes both the package and its data. If it was purchased, you can download it again without buying it again, but plan for a possible sign-in and do not rely on the previous app data being restored.
The app is no longer visible after offloading
Look for its icon and the download symbol on the Home Screen. Selecting that icon starts the download again when the app remains available in the App Store. If the app is no longer available, Apple’s guidance does not promise restoration; the retained data cannot make an unavailable app usable by itself.
A careful cleanup order prevents avoidable data loss
Use a graduated approach instead of deleting several apps at once. First, record which app you intended to install or update and note the amounts shown beside the largest installed apps. Next, choose one infrequently used app and offload it. Return to the task that triggered the warning and check whether the available room is sufficient. This limits the number of changes you have to reverse.

If offloading one app does not provide enough room, repeat the process with another app whose data is not important. Only move to Delete when the remaining candidates are apps you no longer need or when their local data can be recreated. A purchase can be downloaded again without repurchasing, but that does not guarantee that profiles, preferences, progress, or other app data will return.
Keep a note of any app that requires a particular household account. After a reinstall, some apps or content providers may require sign-in again. If several people use the Apple TV, tell them which app was offloaded so they are not surprised when its icon shows a download symbol instead of opening immediately.
What the storage list can—and cannot—prove
Manage Storage tells you which installed apps Apple TV is accounting for and the amount associated with each one. It does not establish that a movie downloaded on an iPhone is present on the television, nor does it provide a universal inventory for downloads managed privately inside every third-party service.
If a warning appears while an app is updating, compare the list before and after one change rather than relying on a generic estimate. Apple publishes no universal recovery amount for a particular app category. The displayed value on your Apple TV is the relevant measurement, and it can differ by model, app version, and what is currently installed.

The list also helps distinguish an app problem from a device or menu mismatch. If an expected entry is missing, verify the Apple TV model and tvOS version first. Menu labels can vary with tvOS and localization, and Apple says that not all features or content are available on every model or in every region.

The Apple instructions for this problem point to app management in Settings. They do not identify an external drive, USB storage device, generic cleaner, or accessory as a supported way to expand or directly clear Apple TV storage. Installing a third-party cleanup tool is therefore not a substitute for checking Manage Storage.
Likewise, deleting an offline item from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or Android device changes that device’s storage, not the Apple TV’s installed-app list. Keep the hardware distinction explicit before taking action. If the file lives in a third-party app, use that app’s own documented controls rather than assuming Apple TV has a system-wide download directory.

- Check whether the item called a “download” is actually on another device or inside a third-party app.
- If the menu labels differ, note the Apple TV model, tvOS version, and region; Apple says not every feature is available on every model or in every region.
A storage warning does not by itself identify a particular app or download. The Manage Storage list is the supported diagnostic starting point, and Apple does not provide a published storage-recovery estimate for deleting a given category of app. Use the amount displayed for each app rather than a general rule.
Prevent the same problem from returning
Review installed apps periodically
Keep a short list of apps that must open immediately and offload the rest when they are not in regular use. This preserves app data while reducing the number of installed packages competing for local space.
Use automatic offloading deliberately
Settings > Apps > Offload Unused Apps can reduce manual maintenance. Before turning it on, make sure everyone using the Apple TV understands that an unused app may need to download again before it opens. Its icon remains available, but the app is no longer installed until you select it.
Separate Apple TV storage from other-device storage
When an iPhone, iPad, computer, or Android device is full of downloaded shows, deleting those files on that device addresses that device’s storage—not the Apple TV’s. Conversely, removing an Apple TV app does not remove a download stored on another device. Identify the hardware holding the data before taking action.
Model, tvOS, and region limitations
The paths and labels above come from Apple TV 4K documentation. Apple notes that content and features can vary across hardware models and regions, and localized interfaces can use different wording. A missing Usage or Manage Storage entry is therefore a reason to verify the model and tvOS version, not a reason to install a third-party cleaner or attach external storage. The Apple instructions reviewed here identify app management in Settings as the supported way to reclaim space.
