You can usually reclaim Android storage without uninstalling apps or touching your camera roll by working from the Storage screen: remove temporary cache, review junk-file suggestions, delete offline downloads, and move bulky non-photo files to a computer or supported external storage. App archiving is another option on compatible devices, but it temporarily removes the app software.
Start with the storage categories that are actually consuming space. Android menus differ by manufacturer and version, so search Settings for Storage if the paths below do not match your phone. There is no universal number of gigabytes you will recover; the result depends on what is stored on your device.

Storage and memory are different
Android uses storage for apps, app data, downloads, offline media, photos, videos and system files. It uses memory (RAM) while apps are running. A phone can have plenty of free storage but still close background apps when RAM is busy, or have free RAM while storage is nearly full. “RAM cleaner” tools do not solve a storage shortage, so keep this guide focused on the Storage category in Settings.

- Temporary app cache can be rebuilt.
- Junk files can be reviewed and removed.
- Offline movies, music and other downloads can be downloaded again later.
- Large non-photo files can be copied elsewhere before their phone copies are removed.
- Archiving can remove an app’s software while keeping its icon and data, where Android supports it.
Do not treat an app’s entire storage allocation as temporary. Saved projects, messages, downloaded maps, game progress and account data may be inside it.
1. Inspect the Storage screen before removing anything
Open Settings and select Storage, then inspect the categories using the most space. On some phones the entry is under Battery and device care, Device care or a similar manufacturer section. If you cannot find it, use the Settings search box and type Storage. Google’s Android Help instructions for clearing space describe the same diagnostic-first approach.
Record the largest categories before you act. A phone showing a large Downloads category needs a different fix from one dominated by app cache or offline video. Open a category only far enough to identify its contents; do not confirm a deletion merely because Android labels something as large.
Use the result to choose a low-risk action
- Apps or a single app: inspect its cache controls and consider archiving an app you can temporarily go without.
- Downloads: remove installers, documents or media you have already copied or no longer need.
- Offline media: remove the offline copy from the app that downloaded it.
- Other or temporary files: review a trusted cleanup list instead of deleting folders at random.
- Videos and documents you must keep: copy them to a computer or supported external storage first.
2. Clear an app’s cache, not its storage
Cache is temporary data an app can recreate. To clear it, open Settings, choose Apps (sometimes Apps & notifications), select the app, open Storage or Storage & cache, and tap Clear cache. The exact labels vary by Android version and phone maker.
Clearing cache leaves the app installed and is intended to preserve its accounts, settings and user data. Google notes that an app may open more slowly the next time because it must rebuild temporary files. That slowdown should be temporary.
Do not substitute “Clear storage,” “Clear data” or “Delete data.” Google’s Android guidance states that clearing an app’s storage permanently deletes all data stored by that app. That can sign you out, remove downloaded content, reset settings and erase locally stored work. If you are unsure which button you are viewing, stop and verify the wording before confirming.

| Control | What it removes | What to expect | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Temporary files | The app remains installed; its next launch can be slower while temporary data is rebuilt. | You need a low-risk way to remove rebuildable data. |
| Clear storage or Clear data | All data held by that app | Permanent deletion of app data, including settings and locally stored content. | Only when you intentionally want to reset the app and have verified any needed data elsewhere. |
| Archive (where supported) | App software, permissions and temporary files | The icon and app data remain; notifications stop until the app is restored. | You can temporarily make the app unavailable while retaining its data. |
Clear caches selectively
Start with apps that stream or generate a lot of temporary content, but inspect each app’s screen rather than clearing every cache automatically. Android may rebuild a cache soon after you remove it, so clearing a small, full cache is more useful than repeatedly clearing tiny ones. If the cache control is absent, the manufacturer may expose it under a different menu or restrict it for that app.

If it is installed on your phone, open Files by Google and select the Clean area. Google’s instructions for clearing junk files describe a Junk files card that identifies temporary files. Google says clearing these files does not affect app settings.
Treat the card as a recommendation to review, not as blanket permission to erase everything. Open the list, read the filenames and locations, and deselect anything you recognize as necessary. When you confirm, Files by Google warns that selected junk files are permanently deleted. There is no general recovery amount to expect because the list is built from your phone’s actual contents.
Check each cleanup card before confirming
- Open the Clean tab and choose the Junk files card.
- Expand the selection so you can see which files will be removed.
- Keep files that are part of an active project or that you cannot replace.
- Read the confirmation dialog, then approve only the items you have checked.
- Return to Settings > Storage to see whether the category changed.
Do not install a paid “cleaner” simply to perform this basic review. The relevant cleanup controls are built into Android and Files by Google; an unfamiliar cleaner can create additional prompts or remove files you intended to keep.
4. Remove offline media and downloads from the place that created them
Offline copies are often the fastest space recovery that does not affect your photo library. Open the app that downloaded the content and use its own downloads or offline section. Android Help gives Google TV and YouTube Music as examples and advises removing content from the source app when another service created it.
Movies and television
In a video app, open the Downloads or Offline view, select a title you have finished watching, and choose the app’s remove-download command. This deletes the offline copy, not your account and not the streaming service’s online catalog.

Music, podcasts and maps
Use the same principle for albums, playlists, podcast episodes and offline maps. Remove an individual download when you want to keep other offline items. If you need the content later, you can download it again when connected to Wi-Fi, subject to the app’s availability and account rules.
Files downloaded through a browser or messaging app
Open the Files app, browse Downloads, and inspect items by name and date. Delete only files you no longer need, such as an old installer or a duplicate document. A downloaded file is not automatically a photo from your camera; check the folder and filename before selecting it.
Deleting an offline copy does not remove the original online account content, but it does remove the local copy. If you need to preserve a document or recording, copy it first.
5. Copy large files to a computer before removing the phone copies
For videos, recordings, documents and archives that must be kept, transfer them instead of deleting them. Android Help describes copying files over USB in its space-clearing guidance.
- Unlock the phone and connect it to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- On the phone, open the USB notification and choose File transfer or Android Auto rather than Charging only, if those choices appear.
- On the computer, open the phone’s internal storage and locate folders such as Download, Documents, Movies or app-specific media folders.
- Copy the selected files to a clearly named folder on the computer.
- Open several transferred files on the computer to verify that the copies work.
- Only after verification, delete the original phone copies and empty the phone’s trash if the file manager uses a trash area.
A transfer is not complete merely because a progress bar reached 100 percent. Check file sizes, open representative videos or documents and make sure the destination is not a temporary folder. Keep the phone connected until the copy has finished and eject it safely when your computer offers that option.
6. Move or copy files to an SD card when the phone supports one
Some Android phones have a removable microSD slot; many do not. Do not buy a card until you have checked your model’s specifications and whether Android treats the card as portable or adopted storage. The two modes have different portability and formatting implications.

Files by Google can move or copy compatible files to an SD card. Google’s Files by Google help page documents the file-management controls. In Files by Google, select a file or folder, choose the move or copy command, select the SD-card location and confirm the destination. Copy first when the files are irreplaceable; delete the internal copy only after checking the card.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen an SD card is not a good destination
- The phone has no physical card slot.
- The card is nearly full, failing, encrypted for another device or formatted in a way the phone cannot read.
- You need the files while the card is removed or shared with equipment that cannot read Android’s format.
- The files are inside an app’s private data area that a file manager cannot safely move.
For those cases, use a computer or another storage destination that you control. Never remove a card while a move is in progress.
7. Consider app archiving, with its availability trade-off
Archiving is different from clearing cache. Google’s Android Help explanation of archived apps says archiving removes an app’s software, permissions and temporary files while retaining its icon and data. The app stops sending notifications while archived. This can recover software space without discarding the app’s data, but the app is not usable until restored.
Restoring requires an app store on the device and the app must still be available there. Google identifies Android 15 and supported-hardware limitations for some archiving steps, so the option will not appear on every phone or for every app.
Decide whether archiving fits your goal
- Good fit: a large app you rarely use, whose data you want to keep, and whose temporary unavailability is acceptable.
- Poor fit: an app needed for two-factor authentication, emergency access, travel tickets, work, or time-sensitive notifications.
- Check first: that the app remains available in the device’s app store and that you know how to restore it.
If your definition of “without deleting apps” means every app must remain immediately launchable, skip archiving and use cache, download and file-transfer steps instead.
8. Manufacturer and Android-version differences
There is no single Storage interface across all Android phones. A manufacturer may rename Apps, put storage tools inside a device-care dashboard, or add a recycle bin that delays permanent deletion. Android version, region, language and administrator policies can also change which controls appear.

Use the Settings search field for Storage, Apps or Clear cache when a path does not match. Read the full button label before tapping it. If an option is missing, do not use a third-party workaround that asks for broad access to your files; move to the next supported method, such as removing a download from its source app or copying files over USB.
9. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing storage with RAM
Closing recent apps or installing a RAM booster does not create meaningful device storage. Return to Settings > Storage and work from the category totals.
Clearing app storage by accident
Stop if the control says Clear storage or Clear data. Those commands permanently remove that app’s stored data, unlike Clear cache.
Recommended Free Tools
Accepting a cleanup recommendation without reading it
Files by Google’s junk-file confirmation permanently deletes the selected files. Expand the list and remove selections you cannot identify.
Deleting a local copy before verifying a transfer
Open files on the computer or SD card first. A successful-looking transfer that produced unreadable media is not a backup.
Assuming every phone supports every feature
SD cards, app archiving, USB modes and Storage labels depend on the device. Check compatibility instead of forcing an option that is not offered.
10. A safe order of operations
Use this sequence when storage is nearly full and you want to preserve installed apps and photos:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings > Storage and identify the largest categories.
- Clear cache for selected apps, never app storage, when temporary data is the target.
- Review Files by Google > Clean > Junk files and approve only recognizable temporary items.
- Remove finished offline movies, music, podcasts or maps from the app that downloaded them.
- Inspect Downloads and delete replaceable files only after checking their names and locations.
- Copy large documents, recordings and videos to a computer; verify the copies before deleting phone originals.
- If available and appropriate, move or copy files to a supported SD card and verify them there.
- Archive an infrequently used app only when you accept that it will be unavailable until restored and the app remains available in the device’s app store.
- Reopen Settings > Storage to confirm which category changed and repeat only where the data is clearly replaceable.
What to expect after cleanup
Android may not show the new total immediately; storage calculations can update after a short delay or after reopening the Storage screen. An app whose cache was cleared may recreate temporary files as you use it. Streaming apps may also re-download offline media when you explicitly save it again.
No official source provides a universal recovery figure for these actions. The amount depends on your phone’s apps, cache sizes, downloads, offline media and file collection. The reliable way to measure the result is to compare the device’s own Storage screen before and after each targeted action, rather than relying on a promised number.
