Free space on a crowded Windows drive by reviewing Windows’ own cleanup recommendations first, then move your largest Steam installations to a library on another drive. In Steam, add the destination as a library folder, use the built-in move command for each game, and keep the original files until Steam confirms the transfer and the game launches.
This approach avoids downloading games again, shows exactly how much space each action recovers, and reduces the risk of Steam marking a moved game as uninstalled.

What you need before moving anything
Have the destination drive connected, formatted for normal Windows use, and free enough space for the games you plan to move. Check the source drive first so you know which one is actually full: open File Explorer > This PC and read the free-space indicator under Devices and drives.
- A permanent internal SSD is the safest default for a desktop or laptop that has an available slot.
- An external USB SSD works when another internal drive cannot be installed, but it must stay connected while you play.
- A USB SSD or NVMe enclosure can repurpose a compatible spare drive; verify the enclosure interface, drive format and sustained performance before relying on it for games.
- Do not begin a transfer with less free space than the selected games require. Steam needs room to complete the copy before it can remove the old installation.
Steam can move installed games between its library folders on different drives. The move is a file transfer, not a fresh installation, so your saves and installed files normally remain available when Steam finishes.

Free space on the Windows drive first
Moving games is usually the largest single recovery action, but Windows can remove expendable data before you touch your library. Use the built-in review tools so you can approve each category instead of deleting folders blindly.
Review Cleanup recommendations
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
- Review the sections for Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud and Unused apps.
- Select only items you understand. Windows displays an estimated amount of space saved before you confirm the cleanup.
- Apply the cleanup, then return to File Explorer > This PC to check the updated free-space figure.
Large or unused files can include installers, old archives and videos that are unrelated to Steam. Files synced to the cloud may have an online copy, but confirm that the service can redownload them before removing a local copy. For unused apps, check whether another person or account on the PC still needs the program.
Enable Storage Sense
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Turn on Storage Sense and review its schedule and deletion rules.
- Run it when appropriate, or let its schedule remove temporary data automatically.
Storage Sense is designed to remove items you do not need, including temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Its main controls focus on the Windows system drive. To inspect another internal drive, use the Storage used on other drives view rather than assuming Storage Sense is cleaning every volume.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check personal folders and the Recycle Bin
Open your Downloads, Videos, Pictures and other large folders. Move files you want to keep to another internal drive or to USB or SD storage. Delete files you no longer need, then empty the Recycle Bin; deleting a file without emptying it does not immediately return that space to the drive.
Windows also lists the previous installation in some cleanup views as Windows.old. Removing it can recover substantial space, but it permanently removes the ability to roll back to the previous Windows version. Keep it until you are certain the current installation works and you will not need that recovery option.
Choose the right destination drive
The best destination depends on whether the drive will remain in the computer, how many games it must hold and how it connects. Capacity is not a universal number: the space you recover equals the actual size of the files you select.

| Option | Best use | Advantages | Limitations to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Permanent Steam library | Fast local access, no removable cable and reliable availability when the PC starts | Drive bay or M.2 slot, interface compatibility and capacity must match the computer |
| External USB SSD | Laptops or desktops with no free internal slot | Portable and usually faster than a mechanical external disk | Must remain connected; USB port, cable and sustained performance affect loading; Steam warns external hard-drive installations can cause performance issues |
| USB SSD/NVMe enclosure | Repurposing an existing compatible SSD | Lets a spare drive connect over USB without installing it internally | Enclosure protocol, USB generation, thermal behavior, drive format and sustained read/write speed need checking |
For a permanent library, an internal SSD is the safer default because it does not depend on a removable connection. If you use an external drive, connect it directly to the computer rather than through an unreliable hub, keep the cable secure and avoid unplugging it while Steam or a game is running.
Add a Steam Library folder on the other drive
Steam must know the destination path before it can move an installed game. Creating an ordinary folder in File Explorer is not enough; add that folder through Steam’s storage management.
- Connect or install the destination drive and confirm in File Explorer that Windows can read and write to it.
- Open Steam and select Steam > Settings.
- Open Storage. The page lists your existing library folders and the games installed in each one.
- Use the add-library control, choose the destination drive and create or select a library folder there.
- Confirm that the new path appears in Steam’s storage list before starting a move.
The exact button styling can change with Steam client updates, but the required sequence remains a storage-management page, a second library path and then a game move. If the destination does not appear, close and reopen Steam, check that the drive has a letter in Windows and add the library again.
Move installed games without reinstalling
Move from Steam’s Storage page
- In Steam > Settings > Storage, select the drive that currently contains the game.
- Tick the game or games you want to transfer. Start with the largest installations to recover space quickly.
- Choose Move, select the library folder on the destination drive and confirm.
- Leave Steam open while it transfers the files. Do not delete the old folder manually and do not disconnect either drive during this step.
- Wait for Steam to finish and update the game’s listed library location before starting another large transfer.
Moving several games in one session is convenient, but moving one or two first makes troubleshooting easier. If the destination fills during a batch, the remaining games can stay in the original library while you add capacity.
Use a game’s Properties when needed
For a single title, open the game’s library entry, choose Properties and look for the installed-files management area. When the client offers a move command there, choose the destination library and confirm. The command is available only when Steam recognizes more than one suitable library folder.

Make the new library the default for future installs
After the transfer, return to Steam’s storage view and set the destination library as the default install location if the system drive is small. New games will then target the roomier drive unless you choose another library during installation. Steam’s updated library-folder interface is intended to simplify content management across multiple drives, so check the install dialog whenever you want to override the default.

Confirm the move and recover the space
- When Steam reports the move is complete, launch the game from your library.
- Check that the game reaches its main menu and that your expected save data, settings and downloadable content are present.
- Close the game and inspect both drives in File Explorer > This PC. The destination should contain the game files, while the source should show the corresponding space returned.
- Only after a successful launch should you consider the transfer complete. Steam is responsible for removing the old installation during a normal move; do not remove folders by hand to “finish” the process.
Space recovered will equal the size of the files actually moved or deleted. There is no universal gigabyte figure because game installations, workshop content, language packs and optional downloads differ.
Why Steam says a moved game is uninstalled
Steam can show a game as uninstalled when the library path is missing, the drive letter changed or the client lost access to the destination. The files may still be present, but Steam no longer has a registered library location.
Restore the library path
- Reconnect the destination drive and confirm that Windows assigns it the same drive letter used when the game was moved.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Add the existing library folder on the destination drive instead of creating a second empty folder.
- Return to the game in your Library. Steam should discover the existing files and replace the install prompt with a playable state.
Verify the installation
If Steam still reports missing content, use the game’s Properties page and run Steam’s installed-file integrity verification. Steam compares the local files with the expected manifest and downloads only files it finds missing or damaged. The check can take time for a large game, and a small download afterward is normal.

- Make sure the destination drive is online and has free space; a full or disconnected drive cannot complete repairs.
- Check that the library folder you added is the one containing the game’s files, not a parent folder with a duplicate nested library.
- Restore the original drive letter in Windows if another device took that letter after a reboot.
- Do not start a fresh installation into the same folder while Steam is still discovering the moved files; that can create duplicate paths and consume more space.
External-drive precautions
An external USB drive is practical when internal expansion is impossible, but treat the connection as part of the installation. Keep the drive plugged in before starting Steam, use a dependable cable and avoid sleep or power-saving settings that repeatedly disconnect it during play. Steam’s support guidance warns that installing Steam on an external hard drive can create performance issues; an external SSD is generally a better fit, but its enclosure and USB link still determine real-world behavior.
If you move the drive between computers, the second PC must have Steam installed and must be given access to the library folder through its own Storage settings. A drive letter or mount path can differ between computers, so re-adding the library may be necessary.

Common mistakes to avoid
Deleting the old folder during the transfer
Steam needs the source files until the copy and registration finish. Manual deletion can leave an incomplete installation and force a full download.

Creating a folder but not adding it to Steam
Steam only manages paths registered in its Storage view. A folder that exists in File Explorer is invisible to the client until you add it as a library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Assuming Storage Sense cleans every drive
Storage Sense primarily manages the Windows system drive. Inspect other volumes through the storage page’s other-drive view and manage their files directly.
Removing Windows.old without considering rollback
Deleting the previous Windows installation removes the built-in route back to the prior version. Keep it until your current installation is stable and you no longer need that option.
Using an external disk that is too slow or unreliable
A removable drive can hold a library, but disconnections and weak sustained performance cause longer loads or errors. Check the enclosure, cable, port and drive health before moving a large collection.
How to plan capacity for a growing library
Use Steam’s Storage page to sort or identify the largest installed games, then compare their listed sizes with the destination’s available capacity. Leave headroom for updates, shader caches, workshop files and new installations instead of filling the drive to its last gigabyte. Because game sizes vary and optional content can be substantial, plan from the specific titles shown on your PC rather than a generic “games use” estimate.
Keep frequently played games on the fastest dependable drive and move rarely used titles to a secondary library when capacity is tight. You can maintain multiple Steam libraries and choose the location per game, so one drive does not have to hold the entire collection.
Bottom line
Use Windows Storage and Cleanup recommendations to remove safe, unnecessary data, then move the largest Steam games through a library folder on a second drive. An internal SSD is the best permanent destination; an external SSD is workable when it stays connected and performs reliably. Register the destination in Steam before moving files, test each game after the transfer, and restore the library path and verify files if Steam reports an installation is missing.
