To reclaim Samsung phone storage after backing up photos, first confirm the correct Google Account has finished backing them up, then use Google Photos’ Free up space on this device command. It removes eligible local copies from your phone while leaving the backed-up items in Google Photos and at photos.google.com.
Before you remove photos, confirm they are backed up

Open Google Photos and check the profile picture or initial to confirm the app is using the Google Account where you want the photos stored.

Tap the profile picture or initial and check the backup status. You can also open Photos settings → Backup to review backup settings.

If you need photos from messaging apps, Downloads, screenshots, or other folders, check Back up device folders and make sure the relevant folders are included. Photos outside the folders being backed up may not be in your Google Photos library.

Wait for backup to complete before removing local files. Google advises users to ensure items are backed up before deleting their device copies: Google Photos Help: Free up space on your device.

This removes eligible backed-up photos and videos from the phone. Google says items less than 30 days old may remain on the device, even though they can already be backed up in your library. The amount of space recovered therefore may be less than the total size of your Google Photos library.

Where the photos go—and where they may no longer appear
The backed-up versions remain in Google Photos and at photos.google.com. To browse them, you need to be signed in to the Google Account that holds the backup and have internet access to view cloud-only items.
Because the local copies have been removed, those items may no longer appear in Samsung Gallery’s local albums and will not be available there offline. Google Photos and Samsung Gallery do not show local and cloud items in exactly the same way; Google’s guidance on the interaction is available in Google Photos Help: Find your photos.

If you still need more room on the phone
Freeing backed-up media only addresses the space used by those local copies. For other local storage, review the phone’s storage screen—often under Settings → Storage—and remove files you recognize and no longer need. Menu names and available features can differ by Galaxy model and Android version. Android’s general options are covered in Android Help: Free up space on a device.

Downloads: Check for old documents, installation files, and media before deleting them. If a file is important, move or copy it somewhere safe first.

Apps: Uninstall apps you no longer use. Some Android devices also offer app archiving, which can remove an app while retaining its data for a later restore.

Cache and app data: Clearing an app’s cache is different from clearing its storage or data. Clearing app storage can permanently delete that app’s data, so try the app’s own cleanup options first and do not clear storage unless you understand what will be lost.

Transfer files: You can move files to a computer instead of deleting them, but that is a separate manual workflow; it is not required to use Google Photos’ space-saving command.

Phone storage and Google Account storage are different
Free up space on this device targets local phone copies. Google Photos’ Manage storage is for Google Account storage; it can help identify large photos and videos that use cloud quota. Removing items from the phone does not itself reduce the space used in your Google Account.
Google’s quota rules depend on backup quality and date: Original quality backups count toward Google Account storage regardless of date, while Storage saver or Express uploads from before June 1, 2021 are excluded from the account quota.
