To free up RAM without adding hardware, first identify which programs are using memory, close apps and browser tabs you are not using, reduce unnecessary programs that launch at sign-in, and limit background activity where Windows provides that control. If the computer is still sluggish, restart it. These steps reduce current or recurring software use; they cannot create additional physical RAM.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the required tools. You do not need a third-party “RAM cleaner.” Storage Sense can help when the real problem is low disk space, but it is a storage-cleanup feature, not a direct way to recover RAM.

What “freeing up RAM” actually does

RAM is the fast working memory that Windows and running programs use while the PC is on. When many applications, browser tabs, or background tasks are active, they compete for that working space. Closing software you do not need allows Windows to reclaim memory for the programs you keep open.

This is different from disk storage. Deleting temporary files, emptying the Recycle Bin, or removing downloads can increase free space on a drive, but those actions do not add physical RAM. Use Storage Sense for a space-on-disk problem, not as a RAM-recovery step.

The practical goal is not to force the memory percentage to zero. Windows uses available RAM for active work and system operations. The useful test is whether closing unnecessary activity makes the programs you need respond normally. Microsoft’s performance guidance does not promise a specific number of gigabytes recovered or a guaranteed speed increase, so treat the steps below as housekeeping rather than a measured upgrade.

1. Observe memory use before changing anything

Start with Task Manager so you can see what is consuming resources instead of ending random processes. Microsoft recommends using Task Manager to review CPU, memory, and disk activity, then closing apps that are not in use and checking the Performance and Startup apps views. See Microsoft’s performance tips for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Open the relevant Task Manager views

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If Task Manager opens in its compact view, select More details.
  2. On Processes, select the Memory column heading to sort running entries by memory use. The largest item is not automatically unsafe; it may simply be the application doing the most work.
  3. Identify ordinary programs you recognize, such as a browser, meeting application, editor, game, or launcher. Note whether you are actively using each one.
  4. Select Performance and choose Memory to see overall memory use and whether pressure remains after you close an application.
  5. Open Startup apps to review programs that start automatically when you sign in. The Startup impact column can help you decide what to investigate first.

Read the list conservatively

Use the Processes list to find applications you deliberately opened or clearly recognize. Do not end an unfamiliar Windows process just because it appears near the top, and do not treat a high memory figure alone as proof that a process is defective. If you cannot identify an entry, leave it running and investigate the associated application through its publisher or Windows settings rather than guessing.

2. Close applications and browser tabs you are not using

Closing unused software is the quickest reversible way to reduce active memory demand. Save your work first, then exit the application normally. A browser with many tabs, several document windows, a game launcher, a chat client, or a video editor can keep memory allocated even when it is not currently visible.

A safe closing sequence

  1. Save documents, projects, or downloads in the application.
  2. Close individual windows or tabs you no longer need.
  3. Quit the entire application from its own File menu, close button, or tray-menu command if it continues running after its window disappears.
  4. Return to Task Manager and check whether memory use falls. The amount and timing will vary with the application and what else is running.

Use End task in Task Manager only when a recognized application is frozen and will not close normally. Ending a task can discard unsaved work. Never use it as a routine method for stopping unfamiliar system components.

Browser-specific checks

Close tabs containing video, large web applications, or active collaboration sessions when you have finished with them. If you need the session later, bookmark the page or use the browser’s own tab-suspension feature if available. Keep only the windows required for the current task; the aim is to reduce active work, not to remove every browser process.

3. Reduce programs that launch at sign-in

Some software starts every time you sign in, even when you do not need it immediately. Reducing that recurring activity can leave more memory available after startup and prevent unnecessary programs from remaining active throughout the day. Microsoft documents startup controls for both Windows 10 and Windows 11; menu names can vary slightly by release. The official walkthrough is Configure Startup applications in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option A: Windows Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Choose Apps, then Startup.
  3. Review the list and switch off an application you recognize and do not need to launch when you sign in.
  4. Leave essential security, hardware, accessibility, backup, or work-related tools enabled unless you understand their function and have another way to start them.

Option B: Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and open Startup apps.
  2. Select a recognized program you do not need at sign-in.
  3. Choose Disable. Task Manager’s Startup impact label is a prioritization aid, not a diagnosis; a “High” label does not mean the app is harmful.
  4. Sign out and back in, or restart later, to confirm that the program no longer launches automatically. You can return to the same screen and choose Enable if you change your mind.

What to disable—and what to leave alone

Startup entry Safer decision Reason
A program you installed and rarely use Disable if you recognize it and can open it manually Prevents recurring activity you do not need at sign-in
A tool required for your job, accessibility setup, backup routine, or device controls Usually leave enabled Disabling it may remove a function you expect to be available
An unfamiliar entry with no clear publisher or purpose Leave enabled until identified Guessing can disrupt Windows or another application
An entry you disabled and later need Re-enable it in Settings or Task Manager Startup changes are reversible

Startup management addresses programs that begin automatically. It does not uninstall them and does not prevent you from launching them manually later.

4. Limit background activity selectively

Some applications continue synchronizing, checking for messages, or performing other work while you are not actively using their windows. Microsoft identifies background apps as one source of activity that can affect performance and describes controls for apps that expose background-permission settings. The exact control depends on your Windows release and the application.

Use the setting only when Windows exposes it

  1. Open Settings and go to the installed-app or app-management page.
  2. Select a recognized application and look for Advanced options or a Background apps permissions control, if present.
  3. Choose a less-active option, such as allowing background activity only when needed, when that choice fits how you use the app.
  4. Read the app’s own settings as well; some programs manage synchronization, notifications, or “run at startup” independently of Windows.

Not every desktop program provides a Windows background-permission switch. Do not force a change by ending system processes or disabling services you cannot identify. If notifications, synchronization, or a device feature is important, keep the related background activity enabled.

5. Restart when memory use does not settle

If you have closed unnecessary applications and the PC still feels slow, restart Windows. Microsoft recommends restarting when closing unused apps does not improve performance. A restart ends the current session, clears applications that did not exit cleanly, and gives you a fresh baseline for testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart as a controlled test

  1. Save all open work.
  2. Close applications that offer an explicit exit command.
  3. Choose Start > Power > Restart.
  4. After signing in, wait for Windows to finish loading, then open only the programs needed for the task.
  5. Check Task Manager > Performance > Memory before reopening optional applications.

If performance is normal immediately after restarting but degrades as you reopen a particular program or set of tabs, use that observation to narrow the cause. If the system remains sluggish from the first clean session, continue with the diagnostic branches below rather than repeatedly restarting.

6. Use Storage Sense only for low disk space

When Windows reports that a drive is nearly full, Storage Sense can remove selected temporary files and, depending on your settings, content in the Recycle Bin or Downloads folder. That can resolve a storage-capacity problem, but it does not directly free RAM. Microsoft’s documentation for Windows 10 and Windows 11 is Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

Check what Windows will remove

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Review Storage Sense and the cleanup recommendations shown for your system.
  3. Inspect each category and its selected options before running cleanup.
  4. Pay particular attention to Downloads and Recycle Bin. Files in those locations may be personal or needed later.
  5. Run the cleanup only after confirming that the selected items can be deleted.

Storage Sense works on the system drive. Its defaults and the categories it cleans depend on your configuration; Downloads and cloud content are not handled unless you configure those actions. Keep this task separate from RAM troubleshooting so you do not delete files expecting a memory improvement.

Choose the right action for the symptom

What you observe First action What the action addresses
One recognized application is using most of the memory Save work and close that application normally Current running-memory demand
Many programs reopen every time you sign in Review Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps Recurring startup activity
Notifications or sync continue when an app is idle Review that app’s background-permission or synchronization settings Selective background activity
Memory remains high or the interface stays sluggish after closing apps Restart, then retest from a clean session Processes that did not exit cleanly and a fresh baseline
Windows warns that the drive is nearly full Inspect Storage Sense cleanup selections Disk capacity, not physical RAM

Troubleshooting branches

Task Manager shows high memory, but you need every open program

Do not close work blindly. Save documents, then identify the least important window or browser tab and close only that item. Recheck memory after each change so you know which action helped. If all open programs are required, a software cleanup may not provide enough headroom for the workload; reduce simultaneous tasks where possible or plan for a hardware evaluation rather than expecting Windows settings to create more RAM.

The PC is slow immediately after sign-in

Open Task Manager > Startup apps and sort or review entries by startup impact. Disable only recognized, nonessential programs. Restart and observe the result before changing another group of entries. This one-change-at-a-time approach makes it easier to reverse a setting if a required feature stops appearing.

The PC slows down only after several hours

Check which applications and tabs accumulated during the session. Close items you are no longer using, then compare the Memory view before and after. If the system does not recover, restart and reopen programs selectively. The pattern can tell you whether the workload, rather than Windows startup, is responsible for the pressure.

You cannot identify a process at the top of the list

Leave it running. Expand the entry only if Task Manager provides a clear application name, and use the application’s own settings or publisher documentation to identify it. Ending an unfamiliar process can close a system component or interrupt another program without solving the underlying issue.

Storage cleanup did not make the PC faster

That result is expected when the bottleneck is memory use rather than drive capacity. Return to Task Manager and inspect running applications, startup entries, and available background controls. Storage Sense should be judged by whether it creates disk space, not by the RAM number in Task Manager.

Limits and safety checks

  • These steps change software behavior; they do not increase the amount of physical RAM installed in the computer.
  • There is no evidence in the documented guidance for a guaranteed speed gain or a fixed number of gigabytes recovered. Results depend on the programs, tabs, and startup items active on your PC.
  • Disable only startup programs you recognize and do not need at sign-in.
  • Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes or disable services merely because they use memory.
  • Save work before closing an application or using End task.
  • Review Storage Sense selections before allowing deletion, especially for Downloads and the Recycle Bin.
  • Older PCs with outdated hardware may see little improvement from performance housekeeping; Microsoft cautions that troubleshooting cannot overcome every hardware limitation.

The most reliable sequence is therefore: measure in Task Manager, close what you do not need, reduce recognized startup items, control background activity where available, restart if necessary, and treat disk cleanup as a separate job. If the computer remains unable to handle the programs you require after a clean restart, the limitation is likely beyond what Windows housekeeping can solve.
