You can reclaim PS5 space without touching your progress. Open Settings > Storage, remove or relocate installed games and apps from Console Storage > Games and Apps, and leave the separate saved-data controls alone. Deleting an installed game does not revoke a purchase: Sony says you can download it again from your Game Library.
For extra protection, synchronize PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage before changing saved-data settings. PS4 saves can also be copied to a USB drive; PS5 saves cannot be copied from the console to USB. If you want to keep large installations locally, use compatible USB extended storage or an internally installed, compatible M.2 SSD.

Understand what is safe to remove
PS5 storage is divided into different kinds of data. A game installation contains the files needed to run a title; add-ons may include separately installed language packs, campaigns or expansions; captures include screenshots and video clips; and saved data contains your progress, settings and other profile-specific information. The deletion controls for these categories are separate, which is why removing a game from Games and Apps does not normally remove its save.

Check the storage breakdown first
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Storage.
- Review the categories for console storage, including games and apps, media captures and other data.
- Open the category that is consuming the most space and note which titles or files are genuinely expendable.
This check prevents you from deleting a small game when captures or a few very large installations are the real cause of the warning. Sony does not publish a universal number of gigabytes that any particular cleanup action will recover; the result depends on your installed games, optional content, captures and other data.
Delete an installed game while keeping its save
Deleting an installation is the fastest way to recover its local disk space. It removes the game files from the selected storage device, not the purchase entitlement or your account progress.
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the game or application you no longer need installed.
- Choose Delete, review the selection, and confirm.
- Leave the saved-data menus unchanged unless you are deliberately managing backups or removing old saves.
If the game was purchased digitally, Sony says you can redownload it from Game Library whenever you want. A disc-based title still requires its disc to play after reinstalling. Deleting a game does not preserve its installation-specific patches or downloaded add-ons, so those may need to be downloaded again.
Remove optional content with Customize
Some games show a Customize option in the games-and-apps storage view. When available, it can expose separately installed content that you do not currently use. Remove only the optional packs you recognize, such as an unused language file or a campaign you have finished. The exact choices vary by title; do not assume every game offers the same components.
Protect saves before touching saved-data settings
Game deletion and save deletion are separate, but a backup is sensible before any broad cleanup. PlayStation Plus subscribers can upload saves to cloud storage through this path:
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5 or PS4).
- Select Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Choose Upload to Cloud Storage and select the games or saves to upload.
Sony’s storage-solutions guidance lists 100 GB of cloud storage for PlayStation Plus members. That allowance can be plan- or date-sensitive, so check the current PlayStation Plus terms on your account rather than treating 100 GB as a permanent entitlement.
Wait for the upload to finish before deleting anything under a saved-data heading. A cloud copy is useful only if synchronization completed and you can see the expected title and timestamp in cloud storage. If you use more than one PS5, confirm that the console is signed in to the same PlayStation Network account associated with the saves.

PS4 saves can have a USB copy
For PS4 saved data, Sony documents an additional USB-copy route:
- Connect a USB drive to the PS5.
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Select Copy to USB Drive and choose the saves.
This USB procedure applies to PS4 saved data. Sony explicitly states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the PS5 console to a USB drive. Do not infer that a USB extended-storage game drive is also a supported PS5-save backup; it is not.
Move games instead of deleting them
Moving an installation keeps the local game files on another storage device. It takes longer than deleting because the console must copy the data, but you avoid a full redownload when you return to the title.
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose the available USB extended-storage or M.2 destination and confirm.
Sony describes this as moving games between PS5 console storage, a connected USB extended-storage device and an added M.2 SSD. The destination must be connected, recognized and eligible for the selected game.

A compatible SuperSpeed USB drive can hold both PS4 and PS5 game installations. Sony’s stated capacity range is 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum. Verify the drive’s SuperSpeed USB support and capacity before relying on it; a drive that merely has a USB connector is not automatically suitable.
| Data or action | USB extended-storage behavior | What you do when you want to play |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 game installation | Can be stored and played directly from the USB extended-storage drive. | Start the game while the drive is connected. |
| PS5 game installation | Can be stored on the drive, but Sony does not support launching it directly from USB extended storage. | Copy the game back to PS5 console storage or compatible M.2 storage first. |
| PS4 saved data | Can be copied from the console to a USB drive through the saved-data menu. | Use the separate Copy to USB Drive command; this is not the game-move command. |
| PS5 saved data | Cannot be copied from the PS5 console to a USB drive, according to Sony. | Use supported PlayStation Plus cloud storage for a backup. |
When a PS5 game is archived on USB, the installation remains available locally on that drive, but the playable copy must be restored to console or M.2 storage. Sony’s wording is direct: to play PS5 games, copy their data from USB extended storage back to PS5 console storage.
When USB is the better choice
- You need inexpensive bulk space: the documented range reaches 8 TB, allowing many installations to be archived.
- You play PS4 titles frequently: those games can run directly from the USB drive.
- You want a portable archive: moving a drive between compatible consoles is simpler than opening the console, although the games still follow PlayStation account and license rules.
Keep the drive connected while launching a PS4 game stored on it. Disconnecting it while data is in use can interrupt the game; use the console’s safe-removal process when one is available.

M.2 SSD: add internal space for PS5 games
An added M.2 SSD increases available PS5 storage and can be used to download, copy and launch both PS5 and PS4 games. Unlike USB extended storage, it is installed inside the console’s expansion bay and behaves as high-speed internal game storage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Compatibility is not universal. Check Sony’s current M.2 requirements before buying, including the supported drive type, physical dimensions, cooling or heatsink requirements and performance specification for your PS5 model. A drive that fits physically but fails the console’s compatibility checks should not be used for game storage.
- Back up or synchronize important saves before hardware work.
- Turn off the PS5 completely, unplug it and allow it to cool.
- Install the M.2 SSD according to Sony’s console-specific instructions and the drive manufacturer’s guidance.
- Reconnect the console and format the drive when the PS5 prompts you. Formatting erases data already on that SSD.
- Use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps to relocate titles, or select the M.2 storage location when downloading a game.
Because an M.2 drive is internal expansion storage, PS5 games moved there can launch without the copy-back step required by USB extended storage. The trade-off is the installation effort and the need to confirm compatibility before purchase.
Choose the right cleanup method
| Option | Space recovery | Future access | Play location | Save protection | Setup burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete an unused installation | Immediate; depends on the installation size. | Redownload the purchase from Game Library. | Reinstall to console or another eligible storage device before playing. | Saves remain separate; verify cloud synchronization before changing saved-data settings. | No additional hardware. |
| Move to USB extended storage | Frees console space while retaining the local game files externally. | PS4 files remain playable on USB; PS5 files remain archived there. | PS4 games play from USB; PS5 games must be copied back to console or M.2 storage. | PS5 saves are not copied to USB; PS4 saves have a separate USB-copy option. | Connect and format a compatible 250 GB–8 TB SuperSpeed USB drive. |
| Move to an M.2 SSD | Frees console space while adding usable internal capacity. | Game files remain on the installed SSD. | PS5 and PS4 games can launch from compatible M.2 storage. | Save handling remains separate from game installation. | Internal installation and a Sony compatibility check are required. |
| Delete optional content through Customize | Recovers only the packs the title exposes and you select. | Re-download availability depends on the title and your entitlement. | The remaining installation runs from its current storage. | Save data is a separate menu and is not the target of this action. | Available only for games that show Customize. |
Cost, capacity and setup trade-offs
Sony documents capabilities and limits, not a universal price comparison. A compatible USB extended-storage drive is generally the simpler external expansion choice, while an M.2 SSD requires an internal installation and a compatibility check. Compare the actual listing’s SuperSpeed USB support or M.2 specifications rather than choosing by connector shape or advertised capacity alone.
For USB, stay within Sony’s documented 250 GB to 8 TB range. For M.2, confirm the drive type, physical size, cooling or heatsink arrangement and performance requirements for your PS5 model. If the console rejects the drive, its capacity does not make it suitable. Also remember that formatting an M.2 drive erases data already stored on it, so never use a drive containing files you still need.

Keep captures from becoming the hidden space hog
Deleting a game will not necessarily solve a nearly full console. Screenshots and video clips are counted separately under storage, and a long capture library can outgrow several smaller games. Review the captures category after handling installations, and remove only media you have already copied or no longer want. Captures are not saved data, so this cleanup does not target campaign progress, but you should still preview important clips before deleting them.
What to do when storage still looks full
The game is gone but free space did not increase
Return to Settings > Storage and wait for the storage categories to refresh. Confirm that you deleted the installation from the intended storage location, then inspect captures and other data. A large video library can consume substantial space even after games are removed.

A PS5 game on USB will not start
This is expected behavior, not necessarily a faulty drive. Use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps to copy the PS5 game to console storage or the installed M.2 SSD. PS4 games are the ones Sony supports playing directly from USB extended storage.
The move destination is missing
Check that the USB drive is connected directly to the PS5, recognized in Settings > Storage and formatted as extended storage. For an M.2 SSD, shut down and reseat the drive only if you are comfortable following the console’s installation procedure; otherwise consult Sony’s hardware instructions. A drive that does not meet the compatibility requirements may not appear as a valid destination.

You cannot find a PS5 save on a USB drive
That result is by design. Sony does not support copying PS5 saved data from the console to USB. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage and the upload path under Saved Data and Game/App Settings. A USB archive of PS4 saves does not create an equivalent PS5-save workflow.
You deleted a game and want it back
Open Game Library, select the title and choose the download option. Your ability to redownload a purchased game is separate from whether its installation remains on the console. If the title was accessed through a subscription, verify that the subscription and catalog eligibility still apply.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A low-risk maintenance routine
- Review Settings > Storage whenever the free-space warning appears.
- Delete completed or rarely used installations from Games and Apps, starting with the largest files.
- Use Customize for optional content when the game provides that control.
- Move games you plan to keep locally to USB extended storage or a compatible M.2 SSD.
- Upload important PS5 and PS4 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage before any saved-data cleanup.
- Copy PS4 saves to USB when you want an additional offline copy; do not attempt the same with PS5 saves.
- Review captures separately so screenshots and videos do not silently become the largest category.
The practical distinction is installation versus saved data. Remove or relocate the former to recover space, and protect the latter through the backup method Sony supports for that console generation.
A quick decision sequence
- Need space immediately? Delete the largest unused installation from Games and Apps. This is the fastest recovery method.
- Want to avoid downloading again? Move the title to USB extended storage or an added M.2 SSD instead.
- Is it a PS4 game? USB extended storage can both hold and run it.
- Is it a PS5 game? USB can archive it, but copy it to console or M.2 storage before playing.
- Are you changing a saved-data menu? Upload the relevant saves first and verify the completed cloud copy.
- Is the category still full? Check captures and other data rather than repeatedly deleting game installations.
This sequence keeps the irreversible choice—removing saved data—separate from routine installation management. It also makes clear why a larger drive does not automatically solve every storage or backup problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete a PS5 game and keep my progress?
Yes. Delete the installation from Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, not from a saved-data menu. The installed files are removed while the separate save normally remains. Upload the save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage first if you want an additional safeguard.

Will deleting a purchased game remove my license?
No. Sony says deleting a game or application does not remove access to it. You can redownload a digital purchase from Game Library. A disc-based game still requires its disc after reinstalling, and a subscription title remains subject to subscription and catalog eligibility.
Can PS5 games run directly from a USB extended-storage drive?
No. PS5 games can be stored there, but you must copy the game back to PS5 console storage or compatible M.2 storage before launching it. PS4 games can be played directly from compatible USB extended storage.
What size USB drive works as PS5 extended storage?
Sony’s documented range is 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum for compatible SuperSpeed USB extended storage. Check the listing for SuperSpeed support and stay within that range; a drive having a USB plug alone does not prove compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I back up PS5 saves to the same USB drive that stores games?
No. Sony explicitly says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive. USB extended storage is for game installations. Use the supported PlayStation Plus cloud-storage upload route for PS5 saves.
Can PS4 saves be copied to USB from a PS5?
Yes. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Copy to USB Drive. This PS4-only procedure does not apply to PS5 saved data.
Should I choose USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD?
Choose USB when you want simple external archiving, substantial capacity or direct play for PS4 games. Choose a compatible M.2 SSD when you want PS5 games to remain playable from added internal storage. USB requires a compatible 250 GB–8 TB drive; M.2 requires an internal installation and Sony’s compatibility checks.
How do I know my PS5 save is protected before deleting anything?
Upload it through Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5 or PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage. Wait for completion, then confirm the expected game and timestamp in cloud storage. Do not treat an unfinished upload as a backup.

The storage display may need time to refresh, and the largest category may be captures, add-ons or other data rather than the game you removed. Return to Settings > Storage, verify the intended installation was deleted, and inspect each category before removing more content.
Does moving a game move its save too?
No. Moving a game installation with Move Games and Apps changes where the game files are stored. Saved data is managed separately through the saved-data controls, cloud storage and, for PS4 saves, the USB-copy option.
The Bottom Line
To free PS5 space safely, delete or move installations under Games and Apps and leave saved-data menus alone. Delete when you can redownload; move to compatible USB storage when you want an archive; use an M.2 SSD when you need playable internal expansion. Back up PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, and remember that only PS4 saves have Sony’s documented USB-copy option.
