Start at Settings > Storage and confirm which storage location is short. For the fastest, no-cost fix, open Console Storage > Games and Apps, delete a game or application you do not need immediately, then retry the update. Purchased digital games remain in your game library for redownloading. If you want to keep the installed data, move it to USB extended storage or install a compatible M.2 SSD instead.
Do not assume the update’s displayed download size is the amount of free space required. PlayStation Support warns that installing data may require reserving approximately twice the free space required. The console’s own storage warning and free-space figure are the practical limits for that update.

Check exactly where the space is missing
From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage. The storage screen separates categories such as games and apps, media content and saved data. It also distinguishes console storage from any USB extended storage or M.2 SSD installed in the system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead the free-space figure for the destination the game uses. A USB drive can have plenty of capacity while console storage is full, and that does not automatically satisfy an update that must install to console storage or an M.2 SSD. Conversely, deleting files from the wrong destination will not clear the warning.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use Console Storage > Games and Apps to inspect installed titles and applications.
- Check whether the game is currently on console storage or an M.2 SSD.
- Leave saved data alone unless you have a separate backup and a specific reason to remove it. Installed game files are usually the largest and safest place to reclaim space quickly.
After making a change, return to the storage overview and wait for the available-space figure to refresh before starting the download again.
Delete an unneeded game or application
Remove a complete title
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Storage, then Console Storage.
- Choose Games and Apps.
- Highlight a game or application you no longer need installed and select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion, then check the free-space total again.
This removes the installed files, not your ownership. PlayStation’s storage guidance says purchased games and applications remain available to download from your game library. You will need to download the title again when you want to play it. A disc-based installation can require the game disc again, so do not treat deleting a disc installation exactly like deleting a digital purchase.
Use Customize when a game offers it
Some titles show a Customize option in the Games and Apps storage view. The available choices depend on the game, but may include removing an unused add-on, language pack, campaign, or other portion while retaining the rest of the installation. Select only content you recognize as unnecessary; the game’s own menu may identify which modes or packs will be removed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Customize is not available for every game and does not guarantee a particular amount of reclaimed space. If the option is absent, deleting the whole installation or moving it to another supported storage destination are the reliable alternatives.
Compare the three practical ways to make room
| Approach | Cost and speed | Is the installed game retained? | Can you play immediately from the destination? | Setup effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete and redownload later | No purchase; usually fastest | No, the installed files are removed; digital purchases can be redownloaded | No; download or reinstall it first | Low |
| Move to USB extended storage | Requires a compatible USB drive; avoids redownloading | Yes | PS5 games must be copied back to console or M.2 storage; PS4 games can run from the USB drive | Moderate: format, move, and safely disconnect |
| Install a compatible M.2 SSD | Higher hardware cost; preserves local installs | Yes | Supported PS5 and PS4 games can be stored and launched from the M.2 SSD | Highest: verify specifications and install the drive |
Deleting is the sensible choice when you need room immediately and have an unused title. USB extended storage is an archive for games you want to keep without downloading again. An M.2 SSD is the more permanent solution when you regularly need several games available to play without moving them.
Move games to USB extended storage
Prepare and format the drive
PlayStation supports commercially available USB drives formatted as extended storage. The storage-solutions overview lists a 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum for USB extended-storage drives; check the current requirements for your region and PS5 system software before buying or formatting a drive. Formatting erases the drive, so copy any other files elsewhere first.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Connect the USB drive directly to the PS5. Avoid using a USB hub for the initial setup.
- Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage.
- Choose the option to format the drive as extended storage and confirm the warning that its existing contents will be erased.
- Wait for formatting to finish before moving any games.
Formatting as PS5 extended storage makes the drive a game-storage destination; it is not the same as using a regular USB drive for captures or other files.
Move an installed game
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the title or titles you want to relocate.
- Choose Move and select the USB extended-storage destination.
- Confirm and leave the console powered on until the transfer completes.
The move preserves the installation and frees equivalent space on the original storage. You can reverse it from the USB extended-storage Games and Apps list when you want the title back on faster internal storage.
Know the playability limit
A PS5 game stored on USB extended storage cannot be launched directly. Copy it to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before playing. The USB drive is therefore useful as an archive, not as a way to run PS5 titles instantly. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage, so the same drive behaves differently depending on the game generation.
Keep the USB drive connected while its games are installed there. If you disconnect it while the PS5 is powered on, first use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5. Removing the cable without that command can risk data corruption.
Use a compatible M.2 SSD for playable expansion
An M.2 SSD installed in the PS5 adds internal high-speed storage. PlayStation supports compatible M.2 SSDs for storing, downloading and launching supported PS5 and PS4 games. This avoids the USB limitation that prevents PS5 games from running directly from an external archive.
Verify compatibility before purchase
Do not choose an M.2 SSD solely by capacity or a generic “NVMe” label. PlayStation’s current M.2 requirements specify the supported interface, physical dimensions, performance and cooling arrangement. The drive normally needs a suitable heatsink that fits within the console’s clearance limits. Requirements and supported models can change, so consult the current PlayStation M.2 installation and storage guidance for your PS5 model before ordering.

Installing an M.2 SSD involves shutting down the console, removing the side panel and expansion-cover hardware, securing the drive, replacing the cover and formatting the drive when the PS5 starts. Follow the console-specific installation instructions; forcing a drive that does not fit can damage the connector or prevent the cover from closing.
When an M.2 SSD is worth the effort
- Choose it when you regularly keep multiple large PS5 games installed and want them playable without copying.
- Choose USB extended storage when your priority is inexpensive archiving and you are comfortable moving PS5 games back before play.
- Choose deletion when the shortage is occasional and your internet connection makes redownloading acceptable.
An M.2 SSD does not eliminate the need for working space during an update. Leave a meaningful amount of free capacity on the destination even after installing one.
How much free space does a PS5 update need?
There is no universal gigabyte formula for an unspecified game update. A patch displayed as 30 GB may require more than 30 GB of free space because the console downloads, verifies and installs data while retaining the existing game. The required amount also varies by title and by what the update replaces.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

This is general installation guidance, not a promise that every update needs exactly twice its advertised download size. Treat the estimate as a reason to create a substantial buffer, then follow the PS5’s actual prompt.
If the console reports “not enough free space on the console storage,” free space on another drive may not help unless the game and update are moved to that destination and the PS5 supports installing the update there. Check the storage location first rather than deleting random media or saved data.
Retry the update after freeing space
- Confirm the new free-space total at Settings > Storage.
- Highlight the game on the home screen or in your library.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update.
- Accept the download and watch the installation prompt for any additional space requirement.
Games and applications normally check for updates when started, but the manual command is useful after a storage change. Keep the PS5 connected to power and do not disconnect a USB drive involved in the installation.

If the update still will not install
Rule out a stale system state
Restart the PS5, then check Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings for a console software update. A restart can clear a failed download state, while current system software ensures the storage and update processes are using the latest fixes.

Run the PS5’s internet-connection test from the network settings. An interrupted download can leave temporary data that changes the apparent requirement. Once the connection is stable, retry Check for Update and allow the download to complete without repeatedly pausing it.
Use Safe Mode only when ordinary steps fail
PlayStation’s update troubleshooting includes Safe Mode cache and database options. Safe Mode is a recovery environment: turn the console off, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep before connecting the controller by USB. Use only the cache-clearing or database-related option recommended for the specific error. Do not select a reset or reinstall option unless you have backed up what you need and understand that it can erase data.
Delete and reinstall as a last resort
If the update files or the installed game have become corrupted, deleting the game and reinstalling it can resolve the problem. This is more disruptive than freeing space because the entire title and its updates may need to download again. Confirm that your saved data is synchronized or otherwise backed up before taking this step, and make sure you have enough free space for the complete installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to delete casually
- Saved data: saves are separate from the large game installation. Removing them can erase progress and is not the normal fix for an update-space warning.
- Media captures: screenshots and videos can consume room, but review and copy anything important before deleting.
- System software: do not attempt to remove system files to create space.
- Unknown game components: use Customize only when the game identifies the component and you understand which mode or add-on it controls.
Cloud saves require PlayStation Plus, and the storage-management screens distinguish cloud storage from console, USB extended and M.2 storage. Cloud storage is not a substitute for installed game space during an update.

A practical decision sequence
- Need space right now? Delete one unused game or application from Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Need to keep the installation but rarely play it? Move it to USB extended storage, remembering that PS5 games must be copied back before launch.
- Need several PS5 games ready to launch every day? Consider a compatible M.2 SSD after checking PlayStation’s current specifications and installation limits.
- Still blocked after creating a buffer? Retry the update, test the connection, restart, update system software and then follow the relevant Safe Mode guidance.
This order minimizes disruption: reclaim existing space first, add hardware only when the pattern is recurring, and reserve reinstalling for corrupted or stubborn installations.

Keep future updates from becoming emergencies
Review Games and Apps periodically
Large titles, duplicate editions and completed campaigns accumulate quietly. Open the Games and Apps storage list every few weeks and remove games you have finished or have not opened recently. A digital purchase can be downloaded again, so an installation does not need to remain on the console permanently.
Leave working room
Do not fill console or M.2 storage to the last gigabyte. Updates may need temporary space in addition to the final patch, and the approximate-twice guidance means a small buffer can still be insufficient for a large installation. The exact requirement comes from the game and the console prompt.
Separate archives from active games
Use USB extended storage for titles you want to keep without occupying internal capacity. Label the drive, use the safe-removal command before unplugging it, and remember which games are PS5 titles that must be copied back. Keep frequently played PS5 games on console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting a digital PS5 game make me buy it again?
No. Deleting removes the installed files. PlayStation says purchased games and applications remain available to download from your game library; you will need to download the files again when you reinstall them.
Can I play a PS5 game directly from a USB extended-storage drive?
No. USB extended storage can hold PS5 game data, but the game must be copied to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before it can run. PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.
Why does a 20 GB update ask for much more free space?
The displayed number is the download data, not a universal installation-space calculation. PlayStation Support says installing data may require reserving approximately twice the free space required, because the console may need room for working and replacement data.
Is deleting saved data a good way to fix an update-space error?
Usually not. Saved data is separate from the large game installation, and deleting it can remove progress. Start with Games and Apps, then consider moving installed games or adding supported storage.
