Start with the console’s storage manager, not by deleting random files. Identify the largest games, apps, captures, and other data, then choose between uninstalling a title, moving it to supported storage, or adding storage hardware. Uninstalling a purchased digital game removes its installed files—not your purchase—so you can download it again from your library while you still have access to the entitlement. On PS5, PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage, but PS5 games must be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played.
Check what is using space before changing anything
A large game install is only one possible cause of a full drive. Captured video, screenshots, applications, add-ons, and other system data can consume enough room to prevent an installation even when the game itself appears smaller than the free-space warning. Open the built-in storage view first and work from the largest categories downward.

PS5: view the storage breakdown
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Review the categories and note which games, applications, captures, and other data occupy the most space.
- Decide whether to remove an install, move game data to USB extended storage, or add a compatible M.2 SSD.
Sony’s storage guidance identifies console storage, USB extended storage, and M.2 SSD storage as locations for game data. Cloud storage is used for supported saved data, while a USB drive can hold screenshots and video clips. Treat those as separate data types: freeing game space does not require deleting captures or saved data unless you deliberately choose those categories.

Choose between deleting, moving, and adding storage
The fastest fix is not always the most convenient one. Use this comparison before pressing a delete button.
| Choice | Space recovered now | What happens to playability | Redownload or transfer time | Effect on saves and captures | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall the game or app | Usually the full installed size, subject to system data and add-ons | The installed copy cannot start until it is installed again | Requires a download or installation later | Removing the install is different from deleting saved data or captures; check the selected category carefully | Games you have finished or can easily reinstall |
| Move to supported external storage | Most or all of the game’s internal-storage footprint | Depends on platform, generation, and title; PS5 games stored on USB must be copied back before play | Transfer time is normally shorter than downloading, but depends on the drive and amount of data | Moving game data does not mean moving every category of console data; review the move dialog | A large game you want to keep without downloading again |
| Add internal or console-specific storage | Creates additional capacity rather than removing an install | Games use the storage location supported by the console and title | Initial formatting or installation is required; existing games may still need to be moved | Does not remove captures or saved data | A growing library and frequent game switching |
A digital purchase is an account entitlement, not a one-time copy tied permanently to the console’s drive. On PS5, Sony says a deleted purchased game can be redownloaded from the game library. On Xbox, reinstalling is appropriate for a digitally owned or subscription-access game while the relevant entitlement is still available. Neither statement means that a title will remain downloadable indefinitely if a subscription ends or an account loses access.
Free space on PS5
Delete a game or app without deleting the purchase
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Highlight the game or application you no longer need.
- Choose the delete option and confirm the item and any add-ons shown in the confirmation screen.
- Return to the storage screen and verify that the available-space figure increased.
- When you want the title again, open your game library and select the download or install command for the purchase.
This removes installed game files from the console. It does not cancel a digital purchase. Saved data is handled in separate storage areas, so do not select a saved-data or capture category unless you intend to remove those files as well. If a game contains valuable local progress, check your saved-data management and backup options before performing any cleanup.

Move a PS5 game or app to USB extended storage
- Connect a compatible USB extended-storage drive and allow the console to recognize or format it when prompted. Formatting erases the drive, so use a blank drive or copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Open Game Library and highlight the title.
- Press the Options button.
- Choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the destination drive and choose Move.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before launching another transfer or disconnecting the drive.
USB extended storage can hold both PS5 and PS4 game data. The important limitation is where each type can run: PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage, while PS5 games can be stored there but must be copied back to PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage before play. A move therefore saves internal capacity without making a PS5 title immediately playable from the USB drive.
Safely disconnect the PS5 drive
Do not pull the USB cable while the drive is formatting, transferring data, or being accessed. Sony warns that an unsafe disconnect can cause data loss, corruption, or damage. Use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5, then disconnect the cable only after the console confirms that removal is safe.
Add a compatible M.2 SSD
A PS5-compatible M.2 SSD adds internal storage for PS5 and PS4 game data. This is different from a USB archive drive: games placed on the M.2 storage are in the console’s supported internal-storage class, so PS5 game data can be copied there for play. Compatibility is not universal; verify the current PS5 requirements and the retailer’s compatibility statement for the exact SSD before buying or installing it.

Use an M.2 SSD when you regularly rotate several PS5 games and want them available without the copy-back step required by USB storage. If your main goal is to archive games cheaply and keep them off the console until needed, USB extended storage is the simpler approach.
Free space on Xbox
Uninstall a large title
- Open My games & apps.
- Find the installed game or app that is consuming the space.
- Open its management menu and choose the uninstall or remove command.
- Confirm the title and any separately listed add-ons you want removed.
- Check the storage screen to confirm the free-space increase.
For a digitally owned game, reinstall it from the library when needed, provided the account still has the purchase entitlement. A game available through a subscription can be reinstalled while that access remains active. If access has expired, the console may show the title in your history without allowing a new installation.
Moving Xbox games requires a model-specific check
Xbox storage behavior is not identical across generations. Whether a game can launch from a particular external USB drive, must be moved to faster console storage, or needs another supported expansion solution depends on the console model, the game’s generation or optimization, and current system software. Do not assume that a drive that stores one Xbox title will run every other title directly.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Before moving anything, open the game’s management screen and read the destination and performance information shown by your console. If the interface offers an internal, external, or expansion destination, use the option that matches the title’s requirements. If no playable-from-external indication appears, treat the drive as storage for transfer or archiving rather than promising yourself instant play from it.
Which storage hardware makes sense?
| Hardware | Capacity and usability | Interface and speed | Compatibility check | Can you play directly? | Portability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| External USB game drive | Choose a capacity that fits the number and size of games you keep; the usable amount is lower than the label after formatting | Performance depends on the drive’s USB interface and the console port; exact speed is not stated in the platform guidance | Check the listing for your exact PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, or other model and the current system software | PS4 games can run from PS5 USB extended storage; PS5 titles stored there must be copied back. Xbox behavior varies by generation and title | Easy to disconnect and move between compatible consoles after the console’s own setup and formatting |
| PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | Adds internal-class capacity for PS5 and PS4 game data; the required capacity range is not stated in the supplied Sony guidance | Uses the PS5’s M.2 interface; verify the current console requirements for the exact model | Must be explicitly compatible with PS5, including any current size, cooling, and performance requirements | PS5 and PS4 game data can be stored in the M.2 location supported by PS5 | Installed inside the console, so it is not a convenient portable archive |
An external USB game drive is the broadest first purchase because it can archive large installs and, on PS5, run PS4 titles directly. It is not a universal substitute for internal storage: PS5 games need the copy-back step, and Xbox compatibility must be confirmed for the exact generation and title. Choose an M.2 SSD when immediate access to several PS5 games matters more than portability.

- Leave headroom: Do not aim for a storage figure that barely exceeds the download size. Installers may need temporary working space, updates can be larger than expected, and add-ons may be installed separately.
- Check the destination: On PS5, select console or M.2 storage for a PS5 game you plan to play immediately. A USB drive can hold it, but the game must be copied back first.
- Finish transfers first: Wait for a move, copy, or format operation to complete before starting the installation.
- Protect captures: If screenshots or video clips matter, move or back them up using a supported USB destination before removing their category from storage management.
- Confirm account access: Deleting a digital install is safe only if you understand which account owns it and whether a subscription still grants access.
- Read the listing: For any drive, check the current console model, capacity, USB standard, and explicit compatibility statement instead of relying on a generic “console-ready” label.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The console still says there is not enough space
Reopen the storage manager and look for a queued download, a large capture category, another user’s installed data, or an add-on that was not included in your first cleanup. Verify the free-space figure after the deletion or move has completed; space may not be released while an operation is still running. If you moved a PS5 game to USB, remember that the console still needs enough internal or M.2 capacity to copy it back before play.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
A USB drive is not accepted
Check that the drive is connected directly to the console, that its capacity and USB specification meet the current platform requirements, and that the retailer explicitly lists your console model. Formatting may be required and will erase existing contents. If the drive contains important files, stop before formatting and copy them to another location.
A moved PS5 game will not start
This is expected when the game is stored on USB extended storage. Use the game library’s move option to copy the title to PS5 console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, then launch it from that destination. Do not repeatedly disconnect and reconnect the drive while the copy is in progress.
An Xbox game will not run from an external drive
Check the console generation and the title’s requirements. External-drive behavior can differ between Xbox models and between older and newer game builds. Use the management screen’s supported destination rather than assuming that a USB archive drive is a playable drive for every title.
You deleted a game and cannot find it
On PS5, open the game library and look for the purchased title in your collection to redownload it. On Xbox, use the library associated with the account that owns the game or holds the subscription entitlement. If the title came through a subscription that is no longer active, reinstall access may not be available until the entitlement returns.
A repeatable cleanup workflow
- Measure first: Open PS5 Storage or Xbox My games & apps and record the largest categories.
- Remove low-value files: Delete finished games, duplicate applications, or unwanted captures, checking each confirmation screen.
- Archive what you may replay: Move compatible data to an external USB drive, remembering the PS5 distinction between PS4 and PS5 playability.
- Install permanent capacity if needed: Select a PS5-compatible M.2 SSD for internal-class PS5 storage, or choose an Xbox-compatible solution only after checking the exact generation.
- Verify: Wait for every operation to finish, confirm the new free-space figure, and start the large-game installation only after the destination has enough room.
- Disconnect safely: On PS5, use the Safely Remove command before unplugging USB extended storage.
The practical rule is simple: uninstall games you can download again, archive games you want to keep, and add internal-class storage when copying a frequently played PS5 game back and forth becomes a regular chore. Always verify compatibility against the exact console model and current software before buying or formatting a drive.
