How to Free Up Nintendo Switch Storage Before Installing Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Pokémon Legends: Z-A requires 6.0 GB on Nintendo Switch and 11.2 GB on Nintendo Switch 2, according to the Nintendo eShop listing accessed October 16, 2026. Nintendo notes that the amount of free space needed can be more or less than the listed figure. Check your console’s available space, archive or delete unused downloadable games, and add a compatible microSD card if necessary.

Archiving or deleting software does not erase its save data. Save data stays in the console’s system memory, while downloadable games, updates and downloadable content can be stored on a microSD card. Do not choose the separate Delete Save Data command unless you deliberately want to remove progress.

The storage target depends on your Switch model

Start by identifying which console will receive the installation. The current Nintendo eShop listing gives different figures for the original Nintendo Switch family and Nintendo Switch 2.

Console Listed space for Pokémon Legends: Z-A Storage planning note
Nintendo Switch 6.0 GB The eShop warns that installation may require more or less free space than the listed amount.
Nintendo Switch 2 11.2 GB The eShop warns that installation may require more or less free space than the listed amount.

These are the figures shown by Nintendo’s 2026 eShop listing, accessed October 16, 2026. They are not a promise that every console will show exactly that much free space at the moment you install. Use the figure for your own model as the minimum planning reference, then compare it with the free-space reading in System Settings > Data Management.

SANDISK 256GB microSD Card, Super Mario Super Star Edition | Officially Licensed for Nintendo Switch, UHS-I, Up to 100MB/s Read Speeds
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

If the free-space number is below the eShop requirement, make room before starting the download. If it is only slightly above the requirement, archiving an additional title is sensible because Nintendo says the actual installation can require more or less space than the listing indicates.

Check your free space before changing anything

You can check the requirement and your available storage in two places. Nintendo says the eShop displays the required space before purchase, and the console’s Data Management screen reports how much storage remains.

  1. Open the Nintendo eShop and open the Pokémon Legends: Z-A product listing, or open the game’s installation prompt if you have already started the process.
  2. Note the listed requirement for your console: 6.0 GB on Nintendo Switch or 11.2 GB on Nintendo Switch 2.
  3. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  4. Select Data Management and read the available-space figure shown for the console’s internal storage.
  5. Compare the two numbers. If available space is lower than the listing, archive or delete software, or insert a compatible microSD card before downloading.

Do not confuse the amount of space used by a game with the amount of save data it creates. Nintendo stores game save data in system memory. The software itself, along with updates and downloadable content, is what you manage when you archive titles or move future downloads to a microSD card.

Archive an unused game without removing its HOME Menu icon

Archiving is usually the safest first step when you may want to play an existing download again. It removes the downloaded software from storage but leaves the title’s icon on the HOME Menu. You can download the software again later, and Nintendo states that the game save data is unaffected.

Archive one title

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Select Manage Software.
  4. Choose a large game you do not need immediately.
  5. Select Archive Software and confirm.

The title’s icon remains visible, which makes it easy to identify and redownload later. The downloaded files are removed so their space can be used for Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Archive several titles with Quick Archive

When several smaller games are taking up space, use Quick Archive in the Data Management area. Select the titles you want to archive and confirm the operation. This is faster than opening each game’s management screen individually, while preserving the same save-data protection described above.

Choose games based on size and likely use. A large title you have finished can free more space in one operation than several tiny applications. Before confirming, check that every selected item is software you can redownload with your Nintendo Account.

Delete software when you no longer need its icon

Delete Software also removes the downloaded game files and frees software storage, but it removes the title’s icon from the HOME Menu. Nintendo says the save data remains in system memory, so deleting the software is not the same as deleting progress.

Delete one title

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Choose Data Management, then Manage Software.
  3. Select the game you no longer want installed.
  4. Choose Delete Software and confirm.

To reinstall a deleted purchase, use the Nintendo Account that bought the game and redownload it from the account’s available software. The save data should still be present because the deletion command targets the software, not the separate save-data area.

Archive versus delete

Action What happens to downloaded software? What happens to the HOME Menu icon? What happens to save data?
Archive Software Software is removed to free storage. Icon remains. Save data remains in system memory.
Delete Software Software is removed to free storage. Icon is removed. Save data remains in system memory.

Use archiving when you want a visible reminder of a game you may replay. Use deletion when you want a cleaner HOME Menu and are comfortable finding the title again through your Nintendo Account.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Protect your save data

The Data Management menu contains a separate command named Delete Save Data. Leave that command untouched when your goal is only to free space for a new installation. Nintendo states that save data is stored in system memory and is unaffected by either archiving or deleting software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That separation means you can remove a downloaded game, install Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and later redownload the old game without intentionally discarding its progress. When the old software is installed again, its existing save data is available for resuming play.

  • Safe for freeing software space: Archive Software and Delete Software.
  • Not a routine cleanup action: Delete Save Data.
  • Storage location for saves: The console’s system memory.
  • Storage location for downloadable software: Internal storage or a compatible microSD card.

A microSD card cannot be used as a backup location for save data. Nintendo’s storage guidance says save data cannot be copied to microSD, so do not buy a card expecting it to hold an independent copy of your progress.

Add a compatible microSD card when cleanup is not enough

If archiving or deleting games still leaves too little room, insert a compatible microSD card before downloading or redownloading software. Nintendo says a microSD card can store downloaded software, software updates and downloadable content. With a card inserted, downloads default to the card.

What the card can and cannot store

Content Can it be stored on microSD?
Downloaded games and applications Yes.
Software updates Yes.
Downloadable content Yes.
Captured screenshots and video Yes, according to Nintendo’s storage guidance.
Game save data No. Save data remains in system memory.

The card expands space for the software files; it does not expand the location used for save data. Existing games that you archive and later redownload can use the card when it is inserted and available as the default download destination.

Check compatibility for your console

The original Nintendo Switch family and Nintendo Switch 2 do not use identical card requirements. Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express compatibility, so verify that the card type is compatible with the specific console model before purchasing or inserting it. Do not assume that a card suitable for an older Switch model will meet the Switch 2 requirement.

Nintendo also states that external USB hard drives are not currently supported for this purpose. A USB drive is therefore not an alternative method for installing Pokémon Legends: Z-A or moving Switch software out of the console’s storage system.

Use the card for the installation

  1. Confirm that the card is compatible with your Switch model.
  2. Insert the card into the console before downloading or redownloading the game.
  3. Open the eShop listing or installation prompt for Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
  4. Start the download after confirming that Data Management shows enough available space for the listed requirement.
  5. Allow the console to use the inserted card as the default location for downloadable software, updates and DLC.

If you are installing on Nintendo Switch 2, the 11.2 GB listing still applies even when the software is placed on a compatible card. The card changes where the downloadable files are stored; it does not change Nintendo’s published requirement for that console.

Choose the quickest cleanup method

Use this decision path when you want to make room without touching progress:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You may replay the game soon and want its icon visible: choose Archive Software.
  • You are finished with the game and want the HOME Menu cleared: choose Delete Software.
  • Several titles are taking space: use Quick Archive to select multiple games at once.
  • The library still will not fit after cleanup: insert a compatible microSD card before downloading.
  • You want to preserve progress: do not select Delete Save Data; saves remain in system memory and cannot be copied to microSD.

For the least disruptive result, archive one or two of the largest unused downloads, recheck Data Management, and continue only if the free-space figure is comfortably above the Pokémon Legends: Z-A requirement. If you need a larger margin, archive additional titles or use a microSD card rather than deleting save data.

Troubleshoot common installation problems

The console says there is not enough space

Return to System Settings > Data Management and compare the available-space figure with the eShop listing for your model. Archive or delete another downloadable title, then check the figure again. Nintendo’s listing warns that the actual space needed may be more or less than the displayed number, so a very small surplus may not be sufficient.

An archived game still appears on the HOME Menu

That is expected. Archiving preserves the icon by design. Select the icon when you want to redownload the software, using the Nintendo Account associated with the purchase. The save data remains available because archiving did not remove it.

You deleted software and cannot find the icon

Deletion removes the HOME Menu icon. Find the title through the Nintendo Account that bought it and redownload it. Deleting the software does not itself delete the save data stored in system memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are worried that progress disappeared

Check whether you used Archive Software or Delete Software rather than Delete Save Data. Nintendo says saves are unaffected by the first two commands. If the separate Delete Save Data command was used, it was an intentional save-data deletion rather than ordinary software cleanup.

A card does not solve the storage problem

First verify that the card type matches the console model, especially on Nintendo Switch 2, which requires microSD Express compatibility. Remember that a card stores software, updates and DLC, not save data. External USB hard drives are not supported as an alternative storage device.

Installation-day checklist

  1. Identify the console: Nintendo Switch lists 6.0 GB; Nintendo Switch 2 lists 11.2 GB.
  2. Open the eShop listing or installation prompt and note the requirement shown there.
  3. Open System Settings > Data Management and check available space.
  4. Archive large games you may replay, using Manage Software > Archive Software.
  5. Use Quick Archive for several unwanted downloads.
  6. Delete software only when you are comfortable removing its HOME Menu icon.
  7. Keep Delete Save Data untouched unless erasing progress is intentional.
  8. Insert a compatible microSD card if the internal library still does not fit.
  9. Start the Pokémon Legends: Z-A download and recheck storage if the console reports a different requirement.

This process frees software space while preserving the saved progress Nintendo stores in system memory. It also leaves you with a clear choice: archive for easy redownload access, delete for a cleaner HOME Menu, or use compatible microSD storage for a larger downloadable library.
