Check the game’s real storage requirement first
A “large JRPG” has no single honest storage number. The title, device, operating-system version, App Store region, and the game’s delivery method all affect how much room you need. Do not rely on a generic estimate or on the size of another role-playing game.
Read the App Store listing
Open the game’s App Store product page and look for the File size field. This is the practical first check for the exact title you plan to install. Record the number shown there before cleaning your phone.

Look for an additional download notice
Some apps request more resources after installation. Apple’s review guidance says an app that needs additional resources to function on its initial launch should disclose the size and prompt the user. If the game displays such a notice, treat that amount as part of the space you must make available. The App Store figure alone is not a universal guarantee of the game’s final on-device footprint.
Understand what the number represents
Apple distinguishes the compressed download size from the app’s installed size on the customer’s device. The download can therefore be smaller than the space the installed app occupies. Delivery can also vary because app thinning supplies a device- and operating-system-specific variant, while on-demand resources can be downloaded when needed and later purged by iOS when space is low.
These mechanisms explain why two devices can show different storage use for the same game. They do not establish the exact requirement for an unnamed JRPG. Use the listing and every in-game storage prompt for the title you actually want.
Measure available space on the iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap iPhone Storage.
The available amount appears at the top. Below it, iOS shows recommendations and a list of apps with their storage use. Tap an app to see a more detailed breakdown before deciding what to do.
Make a short removal plan
Compare the available amount with the game’s listed file size and any additional download notice. Then identify the largest removable categories in the storage list. A large app that you no longer use, several downloaded videos, or a camera library containing old clips may free space faster than deleting many tiny files.
Storage use can change as apps and content update. Treat the number you see now as a measurement, not a permanent guarantee. Recheck it after each major cleanup and again immediately before opening the App Store.
Allow the storage screen to finish calculating
Give the iPhone Storage page time to load its categories and recommendations. If the figures are still changing, wait before choosing what to remove. The list is useful only when you are comparing current categories, not a partially calculated snapshot. After a large deletion or offload, return to this page and let it refresh again.

iOS may offer recommendations below the storage summary. Open the details for a recommendation and review exactly what it proposes before enabling it or removing anything. Apple’s recommendations can include reviewing content for deletion; they are suggestions, not an instruction to erase every item displayed.
Review each proposed item
- Confirm that you recognize the app, file, attachment, or media item.
- Check whether the item is stored only on the iPhone or is also available through the service that created it.
- Decide whether you need the original locally, such as an offline video or an unedited camera clip.
- Skip the recommendation if you cannot verify what will be removed or whether it can be restored.
After accepting a recommendation, return to the storage screen and verify the new available amount. A recommendation may recover less space than expected if another category grew while you were reviewing it.

Choose between offloading and deleting an app
The key difference is whether the app’s documents and data remain on the phone.

Offload when the data matters
Apple describes offloading as freeing the storage used by the app while keeping its documents and data. The app icon can remain available so you can reinstall it later. This is the safer first choice for an app you may return to, particularly when you are unsure whether its local files are synchronized elsewhere.
From Settings > General > iPhone Storage, tap the app you are considering and choose the offload option shown on its detail page. Check the resulting storage amount afterward. Reinstalling later still requires an internet connection and enough free space for the app at that time.
Delete only after checking saves and files
Deleting removes the app and its related data. For a game, that can include local saves or downloaded content. Before deleting an app with valuable progress, consult that app’s own backup or account instructions. The general iPhone Storage screen does not guarantee that every game save is recoverable.
If you choose deletion, open the app’s detail page in iPhone Storage, select the delete control, and confirm. Recheck the storage summary rather than assuming the displayed amount changed by the full size shown for the app.
Do not confuse an offloaded icon with a complete backup
Offloading preserves the documents and data that remain on the device, but it is not a substitute for the game’s own account or backup system. If the phone is lost, reset, or damaged, local data may not be recoverable. For important progress, verify the title’s sign-in, cloud-save, or export instructions before making any removal decision.

Remove other local content you recognize
Apps are only one part of an iPhone’s storage. Review the categories and locations below, starting with the ones that are both large and clearly disposable.
Files and Safari downloads
Open the Files app and inspect downloaded installers, archives, documents, and media saved for offline use. Safari downloads can remain on the device after you finish using the web page that supplied them. Delete only files you recognize and no longer need, then check the relevant Recently Deleted area if the app provides one.
A file stored in a cloud service may still have a downloaded local copy. Removing that local copy can recover iPhone space while leaving the cloud version available, but verify the service’s status before removing anything you need offline.

Offline video, music, and other media
Streaming apps commonly keep films, episodes, songs, podcasts, or playlists for offline playback. Review each app’s downloads screen and remove completed or duplicated downloads. Keep in mind that an offline item is intentionally stored locally; deleting it means you will need a connection to play it again.

Large videos, photos, and other message attachments can occupy substantial local space. Use the storage view to identify message content, then remove attachments or conversations only when you have confirmed that you no longer need them. A message deletion can remove more than the single image or video you first noticed.
Unused apps
Sort the app list by the storage amounts shown on the iPhone Storage screen. Remove apps you no longer use, or offload them if preserving their documents and data is more important than permanently clearing them. Avoid deleting an app solely because it appears in the list; its associated data may be the part you need.
Inspect Recently Deleted areas
Some apps keep removed photos, files, or messages in a Recently Deleted area for a period of time. That retained content can continue using local space until it is permanently removed. Empty such an area only after checking its contents carefully; permanent removal may eliminate your opportunity to restore an item.
Reduce photo and video storage without losing needed originals
Camera photos and videos are often among the largest local categories. First decide whether you need full-resolution originals available on the iPhone itself. If you do, move carefully and verify another copy before deleting anything.

Use Optimize iPhone Storage when it fits your setup
Optimize iPhone Storage can reduce local photo storage when iCloud Photos is configured and there is sufficient iCloud capacity. Apple says full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while space-saving copies are kept on the iPhone when needed.
This is conditional, not an instant storage expansion. You need iCloud Photos enabled, enough iCloud capacity for the library, and an internet connection for full-resolution items that are not currently stored locally. If those conditions are not met, optimization may not free the amount you expect.
Keep the two storage pools separate
iPhone storage and iCloud storage are separate. Buying or freeing iCloud capacity does not add physical app-install space to the iPhone. Photo optimization may reduce the local photo category, but it is not a guaranteed fix for installing a particular game.
Delete only verified duplicates and unwanted clips
Before deleting a photo or video, confirm that it is the item you intend to remove and that any copy you need is available elsewhere. Long 4K clips and repeated exports can be especially large, but their exact space savings depend on the files on your device. Reopen iPhone Storage after cleanup to measure the actual result.

Compare convenience with local access
Optimized photos can make room for the game, but a full-resolution original may need to download again when you edit, share, or view it at maximum quality. If you regularly work without a connection, keep the originals you need locally and reclaim space from another category instead. The right choice depends on whether local access or immediate game installation matters more.
Recheck space, then install in a controlled sequence
- Return to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Wait for the storage summary to refresh and note the available amount.
