To free up space on your iPhone without losing your photo originals, first check whether the full storage is on the phone or in iCloud. If iPhone storage is the problem and your iCloud account has enough room, turn on iCloud Photos and select Optimize iPhone Storage. If you need a separate copy independent of iCloud, export the originals to a computer or compatible external drive and verify them before deleting anything.
First check which storage is full
iPhone storage and iCloud storage are separate. On the phone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and check how much space Photos uses. To check cloud capacity, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Labels and menu placement can vary by iOS version.

Use Optimize iPhone Storage to reduce local photo storage
If the phone is full but iCloud has enough capacity, Optimize iPhone Storage is Apple’s built-in option for reducing the Photos library’s local footprint while keeping the originals in iCloud. Apple says the device keeps space-saving versions and optimizes items accessed least when more device space is needed; the full-resolution version can be downloaded when required. - Make sure iCloud has room. Check Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Optimization depends on the library syncing to iCloud, so do not rely on it as the only preserved copy if the account is full or uploads have not completed.
- Turn on iCloud Photos if appropriate. In Settings, open your Apple Account’s iCloud and Photos settings, then enable the option labeled Sync this iPhone or similar. The exact path and wording can differ by iOS version.
- Choose the optimized storage option. In Photos settings, select Optimize iPhone Storage rather than keeping full-resolution originals on the iPhone. On newer layouts, storage choices may appear under Saved to iCloud.
- Give syncing and optimization time. Upload time depends on library size and connection speed, and local space may not be freed immediately. Check the Photos sync status and iPhone Storage again later.
This method requires iCloud capacity and an internet connection to retrieve originals when needed. It does not solve a full iCloud account; Apple explains how storage is used and managed at Manage your iCloud storage.
For an independent copy, export originals before deleting
If you want a copy that does not depend on the iCloud Photos library, export unmodified originals to a computer or compatible external storage. Verify that the files open on the destination—and, for important photos, consider keeping a second copy—before removing anything from Photos.

- Choose a destination. You can transfer photos to a Mac or PC, or connect compatible external storage. Apple’s instructions cover transferring photos to a Mac or PC and importing and exporting photos and videos on iPhone.
- Check external-drive compatibility. Connector, supported file system, and power requirements vary. Consult Apple’s guide to connecting external storage to iPhone and the drive maker’s specifications.
- Export and verify. Follow Apple’s export instructions, then inspect the destination files before taking any deletion step. Connecting a drive does not automatically back up Photos or remove the iPhone copies.
- Delete only after verification. If iCloud Photos is on, deletion from Photos syncs across devices using the same Apple Account. Use this route only when you have confirmed the separate copy and are ready to remove the synced library item.

Review duplicates, but inspect the merge first
Photos can identify duplicate images and videos. Open Photos and look under Utilities > Duplicates (the section may take time to appear while the library is analyzed). Review the proposed matches before merging. Apple says the merge retains the highest-quality version and relevant data, while the other copies move to Recently Deleted. Know what deletion and Recently Deleted actually do
With iCloud Photos enabled, deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. It is not a command to remove only the phone’s copy. Apple’s iCloud storage guidance describes a 30-day recovery period in Recently Deleted, but notes that when iCloud storage is exceeded, deleted items may be removed immediately and unavailable for recovery. Treat Recently Deleted as a limited recovery window, not as a backup, and do not empty it until you have verified any copy you want to keep.

Safest order of operations
- If only iPhone storage is full, use Optimize iPhone Storage after confirming that iCloud has room and Photos has synced.
- If you need an independent archive, export and verify it before deleting anything from the synced library.
- Use Duplicates only after reviewing the proposed merge.
- Do not assume turning off iCloud Photos or deleting an image affects only the iPhone copy; check Apple’s current instructions for your iOS version before changing sync settings.
