Use the free-space figure shown by Windows Update for your specific upgrade. There is no universal target: a typical feature update may need 6–11 GB or more, while a quality update may need 2–3 GB or more, and Microsoft’s Windows 11 examples range from 5.5 GB+ to 20 GB+ depending on installed languages, optional features and update configuration. Open Settings > System > Storage, remove only reviewed items, move personal files if necessary, and retry the update. You do not need to erase the entire drive.
Find the exact space requirement first
Open Settings > Windows Update and start or resume the upgrade. If Windows cannot continue, it may show a required amount of free space or a Fix issues link. Treat that message as the controlling number for this computer and this update. Microsoft explains that “The total free disk space your device requires to complete an update varies.” The requirement depends on the update path, optional features, installed languages and other updates that apply to the PC. See Microsoft’s Windows Update space guidance.

Published figures are useful for planning, but they are not a substitute for the prompt:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Update or requirement | Space figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Windows feature update | 6–11 GB or more | A broad Microsoft estimate; the actual request can be higher. |
| Typical Windows quality update | 2–3 GB or more | Monthly or other quality updates can still require additional working space. |
| Feature-update examples | 5.5 GB+ to 20 GB+ | Microsoft’s examples range from a minimally configured PC to one with substantial optional content, languages and updates optimized for reduced offline time. |
| Windows 11 device requirement | 64 GB or larger storage device | This is the minimum device capacity for Windows 11, not the free space needed for one upgrade. |
Write down the requested amount and leave some headroom rather than trying to finish with only a few megabytes free. If Windows Update does not display a number, continue with the storage review below and return to Windows Update after each major cleanup.

See what is filling the system drive
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select the system drive, normally C:, to open its category breakdown.
- Review categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, Documents, Pictures, Videos, Other and System & reserved.
- Open a category before deleting anything so you know whether Windows manages the files or they are your personal data.
Storage Sense works on the system drive only—the drive containing Windows and usually identified as C:. Cleaning a second internal drive or an external drive requires a separate action. Microsoft describes the Storage settings categories and controls in Storage settings in Windows.
Use Cleanup recommendations before deleting manually
In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations. Windows groups possible savings into sections such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files and unused apps.
Review temporary files
Expand Temporary files and read the description beside every checkbox. Items can include temporary installation files, thumbnails, delivery-optimization files, error reports and Recycle Bin contents. Select only categories you understand, then choose Clean up. Leave a category unchecked if you are unsure what it contains or still need the files for troubleshooting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check large and unused files
Sort the suggested files by size. A large video archive or installer can recover more space than dozens of small caches, but personal files are not automatically disposable. Open the file location, confirm that you have a backup or another copy, and then delete or move it deliberately.
Evaluate unused apps
Windows can identify apps you have not used recently. Uninstall only software you recognize and no longer need. If an app stores projects, game saves or locally cached data, check its own export or backup process first. Removing an app is generally reversible by reinstalling it, but its local data may not be.

Handle cloud-synced files carefully
Cloud files may have a local copy and an online copy. Making a file online-only can release local disk space while keeping it visible in the cloud service, but it changes offline access. Do not use a cleanup recommendation to remove a file unless you understand whether it is being deleted everywhere or merely unpinned from this PC.
Clean temporary and system files with built-in tools
Storage Sense
Enable it at Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense, then open its settings before running it. Storage Sense is designed for the system drive and selected unnecessary temporary files and Recycle Bin content. Its default behavior does not clean your Downloads folder or cloud content unless you configure those choices. Files in OneDrive marked Always keep on this device are exempt from online-only management.

Read each setting for Recycle Bin and Downloads carefully: changing a retention period can make deletion automatic. Storage Sense is convenient for repeat maintenance, but Cleanup recommendations gives you a more explicit, one-time review before an upgrade. Microsoft documents the controls at Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
Disk Cleanup
Search the Start menu for Disk Cleanup, choose the system drive, and wait for the scan. Select a category to read its description, then choose Clean up system files for a second scan with system-level options. Review the resulting list and select only data you are willing to remove. The exact categories and reclaimable amount vary by Windows installation.
Do not treat every item marked temporary as disposable without reading the description. If you are in the middle of diagnosing an update failure, retaining error reports and setup logs until the upgrade succeeds can make troubleshooting easier.

Choose cleanup actions by risk and likely savings
| Action | Likely space reclaimed | What is removed | Reversible? | Drive affected |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cleanup recommendations: temporary files | Varies by PC; not stated as a fixed amount | Windows-selected temporary or system-managed data | Usually no; review each category | System drive |
| Storage Sense | Varies by configured categories | Selected temporary files and eligible Recycle Bin content | Usually no | System drive only |
| Disk Cleanup | Varies by installation and system-file backlog | Selected temporary and system files | Usually no | Chosen drive, normally C: |
| Uninstall an unused app | Depends on the app; not stated as a fixed amount | Program files and possibly local app data | Usually reinstallable; data may not return | System drive or the app’s install drive |
| Move videos, photos or documents | Equal to the files moved | Personal files remain on another drive | Yes, if the destination is backed up | Frees the system drive; destination must have capacity |
| Remove an optional Windows feature | Can range from under 1 MB to nearly 2 GB, according to Microsoft | Windows feature components | Often reinstallable through Optional features | System drive |
| Delete the previous Windows installation | Varies by installation; no fixed amount stated | Rollback files for the earlier Windows version | No rollback after deletion | System drive |
Move personal files safely
When built-in cleanup is not enough, target your largest personal folders: Videos, Pictures, Music, Documents and downloads of installers or disk images. In File Explorer, open This PC, inspect each folder, and sort by Size. Copy files to another internal volume or an external drive, open several copied files to verify them, and only then delete the originals from C: and empty the Recycle Bin.
- Keep at least one additional backup of irreplaceable photos, documents and project files.
- Do not move a folder while an application is actively using it.
- For a cloud library, confirm whether the action makes files online-only or deletes them from the account.
- Remember that copying does not free space until the original is removed and the Recycle Bin is emptied.
If the destination is removable, use Safely remove hardware before disconnecting it. A drive that is disconnected during setup can make files unavailable to applications or backups.
Uninstall apps and optional Windows features
Remove applications you no longer use
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by size, select an app, choose the three-dot menu and select Uninstall. Confirm the publisher and application name before proceeding. Large creative tools, games and development environments can reclaim substantial space, but Windows does not provide one guaranteed amount for any particular app.
Review optional Windows features
Open Settings > System > Optional features. Select an installed feature to see its details and remove features you genuinely do not need. Microsoft says optional features can vary widely—from under 1 MB to nearly 2 GB—so inspect the listed size rather than assuming every feature is large. Features may be added again later through the same page, Windows Update or installation media, depending on the feature.
Do not remove a feature merely because its name is unfamiliar. Search its description, consider whether work software depends on it, and record what you changed so you can restore it if an application stops working.

Use an external drive when Windows Update offers it
If Windows Update displays a storage warning with Fix issues, it may offer an external-storage path. Microsoft’s instructions specify an external device with at least 10 GB free; the device may still need to be accompanied by additional free space on the internal drive. The 10 GB figure is free capacity, not the number printed on the packaging.
- Back up important files before connecting the device.
- Connect the external drive and make sure File Explorer shows at least 10 GB available.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Fix issues on the space warning.
- Choose the connected drive when Windows asks where it may use temporary update space.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the device connected throughout preparation and installation.
- After Windows reports completion, use Safely remove hardware before disconnecting the drive.
Windows can still request internal space after you connect the drive. If that happens, return to Storage and remove or move the amount shown in the new prompt. No particular brand or model is guaranteed to satisfy a specific update; capacity, free space, file-system condition and Windows’ own eligibility check matter more than the advertised size.
Retry Windows Update and verify the result
- Return to Settings > System > Storage and confirm that the system drive has gained the intended space.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates or Retry.
- If the same warning returns, read the new requirement rather than repeating random deletions. Windows may have recalculated space for a different update stage.
- Keep the PC connected to power, close applications, and allow the installation to restart the computer as required.
- After the upgrade, revisit Storage to check whether temporary setup files remain and confirm that your personal files and applications are present.
Do not delete the previous Windows installation before upgrading
Windows.old and related previous-installation files are useful after an upgrade if the new version has a driver, application or compatibility problem. Microsoft says the previous Windows version is automatically deleted 10 days after an upgrade. Deleting it sooner removes the files that allow you to roll back to the earlier version. Microsoft’s explanation is in Delete your previous version of Windows.
For that reason, do not use removal of the previous installation as a pre-upgrade shortcut. After the upgrade, test the hardware and applications during the rollback period. If everything works and you no longer need the earlier version, open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, select the previous Windows installation if it is offered, and confirm the warning before deleting it. The cleanup is permanent for rollback purposes.

Confusing total capacity with free space
A 64 GB or larger storage device satisfies a Windows 11 device-capacity requirement, but it may have too little free space for a particular feature update. Check the free-space figure in Windows Update, not just the drive’s total capacity.

Assuming Storage Sense cleans every drive
Storage Sense operates on the system drive only. To free space on another internal drive or a removable drive, use File Explorer or that drive’s own management tools.
Deleting Downloads automatically
Downloads are not cleaned by Storage Sense’s default behavior. If you enable Downloads cleanup, choose a retention period you understand and move anything you still need first.
Emptying the Recycle Bin without checking it
Cleanup tools can include Recycle Bin contents. Restore anything needed before selecting that category; once emptied, normal recovery is not available through Windows.

Expecting an external drive to eliminate all internal requirements
External storage is an update option, not a guarantee that the internal requirement disappears. Keep following the amount Windows presents.
Removing system components at random
Optional features and system files have dependencies. Use the Settings descriptions, uninstall recognized applications through Installed apps, and avoid deleting folders directly from C:Windows or other protected locations.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Read the Windows Update request. Record the exact amount and whether a Fix issues link appears.
- Inspect Storage. Identify whether temporary files, apps or personal data are the largest safe targets.
- Use Cleanup recommendations. Review each category and clean only selected items.
- Run Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup. Check settings and descriptions before confirming.
- Move or back up personal files. Verify copies before deleting originals.
- Uninstall unused apps or optional features. Keep a record of anything you may need to reinstall.
- Use external storage if offered. Provide at least 10 GB free and expect possible internal-space requests.
- Retry Windows Update. If the warning persists, follow the newly displayed requirement rather than guessing.
- Preserve rollback files. Wait until the upgrade is stable before removing the previous Windows installation.
