The safest way to make room is to use Call of Duty’s own file manager: open the game, choose Menu > Manage Files, and uninstall only the titles or modes you do not use. Check the current install screen for your exact platform and edition, leave room for mandatory updates, and add storage only after confirming that a compatible drive can run the game on your device.
Start with the actual install requirement
Call of Duty storage figures vary by title, platform, edition, language packs, texture assets, updates, and the content you select. Do not rely on a single “Call of Duty size” quoted in an old article or on a combined library total. Before deleting anything, open the current store page, launcher, or installation prompt for the game you intend to install and note the free-space requirement shown there.

Activision’s official Black Ops 6 PC requirements list an SSD with 149 GB of available space at launch, or 78 GB when COD HQ and Warzone are already installed. Those numbers apply to that PC page and its stated existing-install condition; they are not a universal requirement for every Call of Duty release, console, update, or optional pack.
On Xbox, the Black Ops 6 listing warns that “Additional storage space may be required for mandatory game updates.” The listing does not establish one fixed buffer that works for every update. Treat the number in your current install prompt as the minimum for that configuration, then keep additional free capacity so an update does not fail halfway through.

Decide what you actually need before removing files
Call of Duty installations can contain several separately managed components. Depending on the current title and platform, you may see campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, shared technology files, high-resolution texture assets, language packs, or other packs. Names and grouping change over time, so use the labels on your own Manage Files screen rather than assuming that a pack has the same name or size shown in a guide for another release.
- Single-player campaign: keep it only if you plan to play the story or want it available offline.
- Multiplayer: retain the multiplayer pack if competitive or cooperative online matches are your priority.
- Zombies or other co-op modes: remove these when you do not play them; they can usually be downloaded again later.
- Warzone: treat it as a separate choice when the manager presents it. Existing Warzone or COD HQ files can change the amount the installer needs to download.
- Shared or required files: leave anything the manager marks as required for the modes you selected. Removing a shared component can make another mode unavailable until it is restored.
Make a short list of the modes you want after installation. This prevents the common mistake of deleting one component and then immediately downloading it again because it was still needed.
Use Call of Duty’s Manage Files system
Activision says its file-management system gives players greater control over downloaded content and helps reduce the overall storage used by their Call of Duty library. Its support guidance recommends the in-game content manager when uninstalling full games or game modes, because platform-level deletion can expose individual files and behave differently.

- Open the main Menu.
- Select Manage Files. On some releases this may be presented as a storage, installation, or content-management option within the menu; follow the current on-screen label.
- Review every installed title and mode. Note the listed size and whether an item is required by another mode.
- Select an unused campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, language, or texture component, as appropriate for your planned setup.
- Choose Uninstall or the equivalent remove command, then confirm. Remove one logical component at a time so you can identify what reclaimed the space.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the game or disconnect the storage device while the manager is changing files.
- Reopen the content page or your platform’s storage view and verify the available capacity before starting the new installation.
An uninstalled mode is normally a reversible decision: you can download it again from the same manager when you need it. That is safer than deleting personal folders or save data manually. Do not remove Call of Duty directories in File Explorer or a console file browser unless the platform’s own uninstall process directs you to do so, and avoid third-party “cleaner” utilities that cannot identify the game’s current content dependencies.
Select only wanted content during a new installation
If you are installing Call of Duty for the first time, look for a content-selection screen before accepting the default package. Activision’s current guidance directs new installers to choose specific content rather than automatically downloading every available game and mode. Select only the titles and modes on your list, then review the resulting required-space figure.

The available choices differ by release. A current installer may let you choose campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, or other packs, while another may group some files together. The absence of a separate checkbox does not mean a component can be removed safely; use the manager’s required/not-required indicators and the game’s own descriptions.
Do not use an old recommendation based on the aggregate size of the entire Call of Duty experience. Activision’s support material has changed as newer games are added and older components are reorganized. The current installer and Manage Files page are the authoritative view for your account, platform, and edition.

Storage meters can refresh after a delay, particularly when a launcher is still deleting or rebuilding installation data. After uninstalling content:
- Close and reopen the game or launcher if the free-space figure has not changed.
- Check the platform’s storage-management page, not just the download progress bar.
- Verify that the intended game remains installed and that another mode was not selected accidentally.
- Start the target installation only after the available-space figure is comfortably above the current requirement.
A download size is not always the same as the temporary space required during installation. Launchers may need room to unpack, verify, or replace files, and mandatory updates can require additional capacity. Because the Xbox listing gives no universal update buffer, use the amount shown by your current prompt and keep practical headroom rather than treating the advertised download as a guarantee.
Choose what to remove when Call of Duty content is not enough
If Manage Files cannot free enough space, move to other large items in a deliberate order. The goal is to reclaim capacity without risking irreplaceable data.

| Option | Space and effort | Reversibility | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall an unused Call of Duty mode | Often the quickest targeted reduction; the exact amount is shown in Manage Files. | Usually high; redownload the mode later. | Do not remove a component marked required for a mode you intend to keep. |
| Remove another large game | Can reclaim substantial space, but requires finding and downloading that game again later. | Generally high if your saves are synchronized or backed up. | Confirm save-data handling before uninstalling, especially for offline progress. |
| Delete recorded clips, screenshots, or downloads | Varies widely; inspect the storage category first. | Low unless copied to another location. | Back up personal media before deleting it. |
| Clear temporary or cached data using the platform’s own controls | Usually modest and system-dependent. | High, although some settings may need to be restored. | Use documented platform controls; do not erase game saves or profiles. |
| Buy compatible storage | Provides a durable capacity increase when cleanup is insufficient. | Depends on the device and installation arrangement. | Compatibility, performance, and whether games can run from the drive must be verified first. |
Never make personal documents, photos, recordings, or save files your first target simply because they are easy to find. Check backups and synchronization before deleting anything that cannot be downloaded again.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Streaming quality settings do not replace uninstalling content
Activision describes On-Demand High-Quality Streaming with two relevant choices. Optimized favors high-fidelity visuals and uses more internet bandwidth. Minimal reduces graphical quality and bandwidth use. These settings affect how assets are streamed; Activision does not establish that switching to Minimal reliably frees a particular amount of local disk space.
Use Minimal when your problem is bandwidth, a slow connection, or a desire to reduce streaming traffic. Use the Manage Files controls when your problem is local storage. Do not count a quality-setting change as the equivalent of uninstalling a campaign or mode.
When a storage upgrade is the right fallback
If you have removed every unwanted component and still cannot meet the current requirement, additional storage may be more practical than repeatedly uninstalling games. The Black Ops 6 PC requirement specifically calls for an SSD, making a compatible SSD a legitimate path for a PC installation. That requirement does not identify one drive that is suitable for every PC, PlayStation, and Xbox configuration.
Check these details before buying:
- Form factor: confirm whether your computer accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive, an M.2 module, or another physical format. A console expansion slot or proprietary card has different requirements.
- Interface: match the supported SATA, NVMe, USB, or console expansion interface. A drive can fit physically and still be unusable if the connection standard is wrong.
- Platform support: read the current specifications for your exact PC model or console revision, including capacity limits and formatting rules.
- Run-versus-store behavior: some platforms let an external drive store or move games but require an internal or approved expansion drive to run current-generation titles. Do not assume a generic USB drive can run every game.
- Installation destination: confirm that the Call of Duty launcher can select the new drive and that enough free capacity remains after formatting.
- Backup and migration: copy important saves and personal files before opening a computer or moving an installation.
For a PC, install the SSD according to the computer manufacturer’s instructions, initialize and format it using the operating system, and then select it as the Call of Duty library or installation location in the launcher. For a console, follow the manufacturer’s expansion-storage procedure and check whether the game must be moved back to internal or approved storage to play. The correct choice depends on the device, not on the Call of Duty brand alone.

Platform-specific checks
Windows PC
Read the requirement for the exact PC title and edition, then check the free space on the drive selected by the launcher. An SSD is required for the Black Ops 6 PC configuration cited above. If the launcher uses a shared COD HQ installation, note whether COD HQ and Warzone are already present before comparing your free-space figure with the 149 GB or 78 GB figures.
PlayStation
Use the Call of Duty Manage Files screen first, then confirm the console’s free capacity in its storage settings. Pack names and the amount of shared data can differ between PlayStation generations and individual titles. If you add USB storage, verify whether it is approved for running the game or only for storing and transferring it.
Xbox
Check the Xbox installation prompt and the console’s internal or expansion-storage status. Keep in mind the listing’s warning that mandatory updates may require additional storage. If an update fails despite meeting the displayed download size, free more capacity and retry rather than repeatedly restarting the same full download.
Troubleshoot common storage problems
The manager shows less free space than expected
Finish the uninstall operation, restart the game or launcher, and recheck the platform storage page. Pending updates, reserved space, or another download may be consuming the difference. Pause unrelated downloads and verify the destination drive.

The mode you removed appears again
A launcher may have queued an update or restored a shared dependency. Open Manage Files again, deselect the unwanted mode, and review the installation choices before confirming. If the mode is required by the one you kept, the manager should identify that relationship; removing it may not be possible without also removing the dependent mode.

The install says there is not enough space even though the download is smaller
Installation can require temporary unpacking and verification room, and updates can add files before deleting older versions. Free additional capacity, select a drive with more headroom, or remove another large item. Use the current prompt’s requirement rather than an estimate from a different title.
The game will not launch after a cleanup
Return to Manage Files and restore any component marked required for the mode you are trying to start. Allow the launcher to verify or repair files, and avoid deleting more folders manually. If the platform reports a license or account problem, follow its normal sign-in and restore-purchases procedure; storage cleanup alone does not resolve entitlement errors.
A new drive is visible but cannot be selected
Check formatting, permissions, the connection, and the platform’s supported capacity and interface. On consoles, the drive may be limited to storing or moving games. On Windows, confirm that the drive has a usable volume and a stable drive letter, then revisit the launcher’s library-location setting.
A note about older Call of Duty files
Activision’s Modern Warfare II setup information recorded that older files within the Call of Duty experience were scheduled for automatic removal on August 7, 2025, and stated that Modern Warfare II moved outside the Call of Duty experience as a standalone title. The page displays a June 30, 2026 update date. This is historical context, not a manual cleanup instruction: rely on the current installer and Manage Files page for what is present on your device now.
