Remove Chrome’s AI model files
- Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu).
- Select Settings, then open AI Innovations.
- Turn On-device AI off.
Google identifies this toggle as the only supported way to manage Chrome’s generative AI models. It removes the on-device model files and stops Chrome downloading them again while the setting is off. Google cautions that manually deleting model files may not prevent another download. Google Chrome Help

The setting applies per user and per device, so it can differ between accounts on a shared computer or between devices used by the same person. To use model-dependent features again, turn the setting back on; Chrome may download the models when device conditions allow.
What turning off On-device AI affects
Chrome uses on-device generative AI models for some browser and web features, which may include writing or rephrasing help, scam warnings, page summaries, and tab organization. Features that require those local models stop working when they are removed. Google says other Chrome AI features that do not rely on on-device generative models may continue to work.

Google describes the download conditions as including an unmetered network connection, adequate device performance, and about 20 GB of minimum free disk space. That approximate figure is an eligibility requirement, not the model files’ size; Google’s help page does not state the models’ file size. The page does not expose a publication or revision date, and notes that device requirements may change. Google Chrome Help
Why clearing download history does not fix it
Chrome’s download history is a list of downloads, not the downloaded files themselves. Clearing it removes the list but does not delete files from the computer. Clearing browsing data affects the categories you choose, such as cached files, cookies, or site data; it is not Google’s documented control for removing Chrome’s on-device AI models. If the On-device AI setting is missing or controlled
On a work- or school-managed Chrome installation, an administrator may control local model downloads. Google’s Chrome Enterprise policy documentation lists Local foundational model settings for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The default is Download model automatically; administrators can select Do not download model. Google also documents the Component updates setting as a way to prevent model downloads. Find other storage use on a Chromebook
If storage is still low after removing the model files, review what else is using space. On a Chromebook, open Settings > System preferences > Storage management. Google’s storage view breaks usage into categories including downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android storage, and other users. You can then remove files or apps you no longer need, or clear selected browsing data. These general cleanup steps are separate from Chrome’s On-device AI control. Google Chromebook Help
