Start at Settings > Storage, identify the largest category, and review every deletion before confirming. Do not use Clear storage unless you intend to erase that app’s data.
Storage is not the same as memory
Android storage is the phone’s long-term space for photos, videos, music, downloaded documents, app data and the operating system. Memory (RAM) is the working area Android uses while apps and system processes run. Force-closing apps may change memory use temporarily, but it does not meaningfully reclaim the internal storage this guide addresses.

Menu names differ between manufacturers and Android versions. A Pixel, Galaxy, Motorola or other phone may place the same control under a slightly different heading. Treat the paths below as the usual route, then look for the equivalent label on your device. Some storage-management features require Android 14 or later, and app archiving has additional Android-version and hardware requirements.
The safest cleanup order
Use this sequence so you begin with reversible or easily verified actions and postpone destructive ones:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Open Settings > Storage and inspect which category is consuming space.
- Review downloaded files, screenshots, duplicate-looking items, and offline music or video that you recognize.
- Use Files by Google > Clean to review junk-file and other suggestions, deleting only selections you understand.
- Clear the cache of individual apps when temporary files are the problem; never confuse this with clearing app storage.
- Verify that photos and videos are backed up before removing their local copies through the Google Photos workflow.
- Copy files you want to keep to a computer or a supported SD card, confirm the copy, and then remove the phone copies.
- Check whether app archiving is offered if app software, rather than personal files, is taking most of the space.
There is no guaranteed number of gigabytes for any step. The result depends on what is stored on your particular phone, how much temporary data apps have accumulated, and which files you choose to remove.
1. Find the largest storage category first
Open the storage breakdown
Go to Settings > Storage. You should see a breakdown such as apps, images, videos, audio, documents, downloads, system data or other categories. The exact labels and the delay before the totals update vary by device.
Do not begin by deleting random files. If videos dominate the chart, clearing a small app cache will have little effect. If one app has unusually large data, investigate that app’s own download or media controls instead of deleting unrelated photos.
Check free space after each major action
Return to the Storage screen after a cleanup and allow Android time to recalculate. A category can appear unchanged until indexing finishes. Keeping a little free space also gives Android room for updates and temporary files; the settings screen, rather than a universal percentage, is the authoritative view for your phone.
2. Remove files you can identify
Downloads and documents
Open the app that downloaded an item when possible. Android’s own guidance recommends removing downloaded content from the originating app, while Files by Google can help locate files across folders. Review filenames, dates and sizes before deleting. Installation packages, exported videos, large presentations and old ZIP files are common sources of avoidable usage, but a file that looks unfamiliar may still be needed by an app or another person.

- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Screenshots, camera exports and duplicates
Use your gallery or file manager to inspect screenshots, screen recordings, edited copies and duplicate exports. Keep the version you actually need, and check that a photo is not merely a low-resolution thumbnail before removing it. If a file matters, copy it off the phone first rather than relying on a recycle-bin feature that may be emptied automatically.
Offline music, video and maps
Streaming and navigation apps can store large offline packages. Delete downloads from inside the service that created them so the app updates its own index. Removing an offline file may require downloading it again later, but it does not uninstall the app. Look for labels such as Downloads, Offline, Saved or Manage downloads within each service.

3. Use Files by Google, but inspect every suggestion
Review the Clean cards
In Files by Google, open Clean. The app can present cards for junk files, large files, duplicate files, unused files and other cleanup opportunities, depending on what it finds. Open each card, expand the selection where possible, and deselect anything you want to retain.
Google states that clearing junk files does not change app settings, but the selected files themselves are permanently deleted. The same permanent-deletion warning applies when you delete files through Files by Google. A cleanup card is a suggestion, not proof that every listed item is disposable.
What to check before confirming
- File names and extensions: a video, document or audio file may be personal even if it appears in a generic category.
- Folder location: files in a messaging, work or camera folder can have meaning outside the cleanup app.
- Selection count and total size: confirm that the amount shown matches what you intend to remove.
- Backup status: deletion from the device is not a backup operation.
If you cannot explain why a suggested file exists, cancel the card and investigate it with a file manager or the originating app first.

4. Clear an app’s cache—not its storage
The difference
| Control | What it removes | Effect on the app | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Temporary data | The app and its saved data remain. Google notes that some apps may be slower the next time they open while temporary files are recreated. | A specific app has accumulated unusually large temporary files or is misbehaving after a temporary-data problem. |
| Clear storage (sometimes called Clear data) | All data stored for that app | It permanently deletes the app’s local data. You may be signed out, lose offline content or reset in-app settings. | Only when you have intentionally backed up or otherwise accepted the loss and the app’s own deletion tools have not solved the problem. |
How to clear a cache
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications, then select the app.
- Choose Storage & cache or the equivalent storage entry.
- Tap Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data.
- Recheck the Storage screen and open the app again when convenient.
Clearing a cache is not a routine requirement for every app. Cache contents often return because apps use them to work efficiently. If the app’s storage is mostly documents, downloaded media or account data, clearing its cache will not remove those larger items.
Delete data inside the app first
When an app offers controls for downloaded episodes, maps, attachments, drafts or other stored content, use those controls before Android’s Clear storage command. They can remove one category while preserving your account and settings. If the only available Android control is Clear storage, read the warning and verify any cloud sync or export before proceeding.
5. Remove local copies of backed-up photos and videos
Verify the backup before deleting anything
Google Photos can remove device copies of photos and videos that have already been backed up. The backed-up versions remain accessible in Google Photos when you have an internet connection. Backup status must be verified first: an item that is still uploading, excluded from backup, or present only on the phone cannot be safely treated as a cloud copy.
Open Google Photos and check the backup indicator and the individual item’s status. If your phone has more than one Google account, confirm that the account shown is the one containing the backup. Also check whether a photo was edited locally or stored in a folder that your backup settings exclude.
Use the app’s free-up-space workflow
After verification, use the Google Photos option for freeing space on the device and review the count of local items it proposes to remove. This process targets local copies rather than the backed-up versions. You still need an internet connection to view those cloud copies later, and downloading them again will use storage and data.

When not to use this method
- You need guaranteed offline access to the originals.
- Backup has not completed or you cannot identify the backup account.
- Your connection is limited and you cannot reliably retrieve cloud copies.
- You have another local-only photo library that has not been copied elsewhere.
6. Move files to a computer or SD card
Copy to a computer
- Connect the phone to the computer with a suitable USB cable.
- Unlock the phone and choose the USB mode that permits file transfer if Android presents a notification.
- On the computer, open the phone’s storage and copy selected folders or files to a clearly named destination.
- Open several copied files on the computer, compare file counts or sizes where practical, and only then delete the phone copies.
- Empty the phone’s trash or recycle bin if the device retains deleted files and you need the space immediately.
A computer is an off-device destination, so you do not need to buy an accessory to use this method. Keep at least one additional copy of irreplaceable files if the computer is not backed up.
Copy to a microSD card when supported
Only phones with an SD-card slot and software support can use this option. In Files by Google, select the files, choose the move or copy action, and select the SD card as the destination. Confirm that the card is mounted and that the files open from it before removing the originals from internal storage.
An SD card provides a place for files; it does not automatically expand internal app storage. Many phones keep apps and their private data on internal storage even when photos, videos or documents are moved to the card. Card speed, formatting and encryption can also affect whether a particular file or app can use it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Archive unused apps where the feature is available
What archiving does
Archiving is different from deleting personal files and different from clearing an app’s data. Google describes an archived app as having its software, permissions, temporary files and notifications removed while its app icon and data are retained. This can reclaim app-software space without discarding the data Android keeps for that app.
Availability and restoration limits
Automatic or manual archiving is not present on every Android phone. Availability depends on the Android version, device hardware and app-store support; some manual archive steps require Android 15 and supported hardware. The app must remain available from the relevant app store for its software to be restored. An archived app is therefore not a guarantee of instant offline access.

How to decide whether to archive
- Choose archiving for an app you rarely use but may want to return to.
- Do not archive an app you need while travelling, offline or without reliable store access.
- Check that its important data is synchronized or exported before relying on an archive.
- Look for an archive control in the app’s system information or app-store management screen; the label and location vary by device.
8. Consider Smart Storage carefully
Android’s Smart Storage setting is described by Google as automatically clearing backed-up photos and videos when device storage is nearly full. It can reduce manual maintenance, but it changes when local copies are removed. Before enabling it, confirm that photo backup is working, understand that the phone may no longer hold those originals locally, and decide whether your connectivity is sufficient to view or download them later.
Smart Storage is not a replacement for reviewing downloads, offline media or app data. It also does not make an unbacked-up photo safe to delete. If you prefer to approve each deletion, leave the setting off and use the manual Google Photos workflow after checking backup status.
Choose the method by source of the space
| What occupies space | First action | Data-loss risk | Compatibility notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downloads, screenshots or personal documents | Review in the originating app or Files by Google, then delete or transfer known items. | High if you delete without opening or copying the file. | Available on Android phones, though labels and file locations vary. |
| Offline music, video or maps | Remove downloads inside the service that created them. | Usually limited to offline access; you may need to download again. | Controls differ by service. |
| Temporary app files | Use the app’s storage screen and tap Clear cache. | Lower than clearing storage, but the app may be slower on its next launch. | Path and wording vary by manufacturer. |
| App documents, accounts or settings | Use deletion or export tools inside the app; treat Clear storage as destructive. | High: local app data is permanently deleted. | Some data may be synchronized, but do not assume it is. |
| Backed-up photos and videos | Verify backup, then remove local copies with Google Photos. | High if backup was incomplete; low only after verification. | Cloud copies require internet access to view or restore. |
| Files you must keep but rarely access | Copy to a computer or supported SD card, verify, then delete phone copies. | Low after a verified copy; higher if the only copy is deleted. | SD-card support is phone-specific and does not automatically expand app storage. |
| Installed app software | Check whether archiving is available. | App software and notifications are removed; retained data may depend on restoration availability. | Feature support varies; some archive actions require Android 15 and compatible hardware. |
Troubleshooting when space does not return
The Storage total has not changed
Wait for Android or the file manager to recalculate, then restart the phone and check again. Confirm that you deleted internal-storage copies rather than shortcuts, thumbnails or files already stored on an SD card. If a trash or recycle-bin feature is enabled, empty it only after checking its contents.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAn app is still large after clearing its cache
Inspect the app’s storage breakdown. A cache is only temporary data; account databases, downloaded media and user-created files remain. Use the app’s own cleanup controls. Do not escalate to Clear storage unless you accept permanent loss of the app’s local data and have checked backup or export options.
Files by Google suggests something you need
Cancel the cleanup card, locate the file’s folder and open the item with an appropriate app. You can then move it to a computer or supported SD card instead of deleting it. Because Files by Google deletion is permanent, do not rely on recovering an item afterward.
The SD card cannot receive the files
Confirm that the phone actually supports a removable card, that the card is inserted and mounted, and that it has free space. If the card is formatted or encrypted in a way the phone cannot use, copy the files to a computer instead. Do not remove the internal copies until a transferred file opens successfully.
An archived app will not come back
Check the app store while connected to the internet and confirm that the same app is still available for your device. If it has been withdrawn, is incompatible with the current Android version or cannot be downloaded, the retained data may not be useful by itself. Archiving is therefore best for apps you can reinstall when needed, not as a substitute for a backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA final safety checklist
- Identify the largest category in Settings > Storage before deleting anything.
- Open or inspect personal files instead of trusting a generic cleanup label.
- Use Clear cache for temporary data; never use Clear storage casually.
- Verify Google Photos backup before removing local photo or video copies.
- Confirm a computer or SD-card transfer by opening files before deleting the originals.
- Remember that an SD card stores files but does not automatically become internal app storage.
- Treat archiving as a version- and hardware-dependent way to remove app software while retaining data, not as a universal feature.
- Recheck storage after each major change so you know which action actually helped.
The most reliable approach is targeted cleanup: remove or move the largest files you recognize, clear only temporary app data, and use photo removal or archiving only after verifying the conditions that make those actions safe.
