1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe safest plan for a valuable video game poster is to store the original in conservation-quality conditions and display a well-made reproduction. Paper and printed inks suffer cumulative, irreversible damage from light. If you decide to display the original, use a conservation-minded frame: stable archival mat board, glazing that filters ultraviolet radiation, a spacer or window mat that keeps the poster away from the glazing, and a non-adhesive mounting method. Keep the frame out of direct sun and intense light, and treat display as a limited exposure rather than a permanent installation.
The recommendations below adapt guidance from the Library of Congress, the U.S. National Archives, the Canadian Conservation Institute, and the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association to collectible game posters. Those institutions publish guidance for works on paper generally, not tests on a particular poster’s paper or ink. The poster’s size, printing process, previous treatment, condition and environment can change the appropriate choice.

Decide whether the original should be on the wall
A poster can be perfectly framed and still fade, yellow, embrittle or otherwise change. The Library of Congress states that long-term or permanent display of paper-based materials is not recommended because light damage is permanent. A frame slows some risks; it does not make the poster permanent.
| Approach | Preservation result | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Store the original and display a reproduction | Lowest light exposure for the collectible; the copy can remain visible for everyday enjoyment. | High-value, rare, signed, fragile, already faded or historically important posters. |
| Display the original for limited periods | Accepts some cumulative fading and paper aging while reducing total exposure through rotation. | A sound poster whose owner accepts gradual, irreversible change and can control light and display time. |
| Leave the original on permanent display | Highest exposure and the least defensible preservation choice, even with UV-filtering glazing. | Only when display value clearly outweighs conservation priorities and the owner understands that damage cannot be reversed. |
A high-quality scan or licensed reprint is not merely a compromise. It lets you enjoy the artwork while reserving the original for occasional inspection, exhibitions or a future owner. Keep the reproduction clearly identified so it cannot later be mistaken for the collectible.

Understand what light does to paper and inks
Ultraviolet radiation accelerates fading and chemical change, but visible light also damages paper and colorants. Filtering UV therefore reduces one part of the exposure; it does not stop fading caused by the rest of the spectrum. Lowering light intensity and shortening the time the poster is illuminated generally provide more protection than relying on UV filtration alone.
Light damage is cumulative. A poster exposed to moderate light for many months can receive a similar total dose to one exposed briefly to a much brighter source. Fading, yellowing or discoloration, loss of strength and brittleness may appear gradually, and a faded ink cannot be restored to its former intensity by changing the frame.
The Canadian Conservation Institute publishes estimated time ranges for noticeable fading at different light levels and for materials with different color sensitivities. Those ranges are general estimates for paper materials, not a prediction for a particular video-game poster: its inks, paper, prior exposure and condition have not been examined. Use the estimates to understand why intensity and duration matter, not to promise a service life.

Use the right mat board
The Library of Congress recommends mat board made from 100% cotton rag or chemically purified, lignin-free wood pulp. Choose pH-neutral or slightly alkaline board at least 4-ply thick. These specifications reduce the chance that acids or unstable components in the mat will migrate into the poster.
A window mat creates a physical border around the image and helps keep the sheet flat. It also prevents the poster from touching the glazing. For a large or wavy poster, a deeper spacer may be needed. The visible opening should be sized so the mat does not cover important artwork, signatures, edition marks or margins.

Separate the poster from the glazing
Never let the paper rest against glass or acrylic. Condensation, static, pressure and abrasion can cause sticking, distortion or surface loss. Use a sufficiently thick window mat or dedicated frame spacers between the poster and glazing, with enough depth that a slight curl cannot bridge the gap.
UV-filtering glass or acrylic is appropriate where an original must be displayed. The Library of Congress describes acrylic as lighter and less brittle than glass, which can matter for a large frame or a wall that is difficult to reinforce. Acrylic scratches more easily and may bow at larger sizes, so select the glazing product and frame construction for the poster’s dimensions, handling needs and installation location. UV filtering does not eliminate visible-light damage.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose stable backing and frame materials
The backing should be rigid enough to support the sheet without flexing and should not contain unstable materials that can contact the poster. A conservation framer can specify a backing board compatible with the mat and frame depth. Avoid wood, cardboard or foams whose composition is unknown when they will sit directly against the paper.
The outer frame protects against handling and some dust, but a sealed frame is not automatically archival. The frame must hold the glazing, spacer, mat, poster and backing without squeezing the sheet. Oversized posters may need cross-bracing or professional construction to prevent the frame from twisting.
| Frame element | Preferred specification | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mat | At least 4-ply, 100% cotton rag or chemically purified lignin-free pulp; pH-neutral or slightly alkaline. | Reduces acidic or unstable contact next to the paper. |
| Glazing | UV-filtering glass or acrylic selected for the frame size. | Reduces ultraviolet exposure; neither option stops all light damage. |
| Separation | Window mat or frame spacers deep enough to keep the poster off the glazing. | Prevents contact, pressure, static and condensation-related sticking. |
| Backing | Rigid, stable conservation-compatible support. | Supports the sheet and limits flexing without introducing reactive materials. |
| Attachment | Non-adhesive corners or reversible conservation hinges. | Allows removal without glue or tape residue. |
Mount the poster without tape or glue
Do not attach an original with ordinary tape, double-sided tape, spray adhesive or glue. The Library of Congress specifically warns against self-stick tape, including products marketed as archival. Adhesives can stain, become brittle, creep into the fibers or tear the sheet when removed.

Non-adhesive photo corners
Paper or polyester photo corners hold the poster at its edges without sticking to it. They are useful when the sheet is sound and the corners can be supported without placing stress on a weak margin. The corners should be sized to the paper, attached to the mat or mounting support rather than to the poster, and positioned so the sheet can expand slightly with normal environmental changes.

Conservation hinges
For a suitable poster, a paper conservator or experienced conservation framer may use Japanese-paper hinges with wheat-starch paste or methyl cellulose. The National Archives identifies these reversible methods, along with non-adhesive corners, as appropriate approaches. Hinging is not a universal DIY instruction: brittle, torn, heavily coated, flaking or unusually large posters require an examination before a method is chosen.
Never flatten a curl by forcing it under glass or by adding tape to hold a corner down. Pressure can leave a permanent crease or transfer ink to the glazing.
Step-by-step framing workflow
- Document the poster. Photograph the front, back, edges, folds, signatures and existing marks. Record dimensions, paper type if known, provenance and any previous repairs. This record helps detect change and proves which object is the original if a reproduction is also displayed.
- Inspect before buying materials. Look for tears, brittle folds, flaking ink, stains, mold odor, active insect damage, detached layers and pressure-sensitive tape. Do not clean or repair a questionable sheet during this inspection.
- Choose display or storage. If the poster is rare, valuable, fragile, already fading or frequently handled, plan to store it and display a reproduction. If it will be displayed, decide how often it will be rotated and where light can be controlled.
- Measure the object and frame depth. Measure the sheet, not just the printed image. Allow for a mat border, the thickness of the poster and a spacer that leaves clearance on every side. Oversized or unusually thick objects should be measured by a conservation framer.
- Select archival mat board. Specify 4-ply or thicker cotton-rag or purified lignin-free board with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. Confirm that the mat opening will not hide important margins or marks.
- Plan the attachment. Use non-adhesive photo corners when appropriate, or have a qualified framer install reversible Japanese-paper hinges. Do not let tape or glue touch the original.
- Install a spacer or window mat. Verify that the poster cannot touch the glazing if it curls, shifts or is pressed by the backing. A deeper spacer is safer than a tight fit.
- Add UV-filtering glazing and stable backing. Choose glass or acrylic for the frame’s size and handling conditions. Check that the glazing is clean before assembly and that no cleaning liquid can run onto the paper.
- Close the frame without compression. The components should be held securely but not forced together. If the backing bows or the poster buckles, stop and correct the construction.
- Label and photograph the finished package. Note the date, materials, mounting method and location. Keep the original documentation with the storage record, not taped to the poster or backing.
Control the display environment
Place the frame on an interior wall away from direct sun, skylights, high-output lamps and heat sources. A room that feels comfortable to people can still deliver damaging light over long periods; use the dimmest practical illumination and switch lights off when nobody is viewing the poster.
Avoid locations above radiators, fireplaces, electronics that exhaust heat or vents that blow dust. Keep the frame away from areas where it can be bumped, splashed or exposed to cooking vapors. Hang it securely so vibration does not make the sheet rub against the mat or glazing.

For a valuable original, set a display schedule rather than leaving it up indefinitely. Rotate it with a reproduction or another collectible, keep a log of display dates and inspect the colors and paper at each change. A schedule cannot reverse exposure, but it limits the total dose and makes gradual change easier to notice.

Handle as little as possible
Clean, dry hands are preferable to gloves that reduce grip and cause a large sheet to slip. Support the entire poster with a rigid, clean sheet of paper or mat board when lifting or moving it. Do not lift by one corner, drag it across a table or allow folds to hang unsupported.
Use archival folders and boxes
For unframed storage, place the poster in an acid-free folder or box large enough that it is not forced to bend. Provide a rigid support for oversized sheets. Do not stack heavy objects on top, and avoid storing the poster tightly rolled unless a conservator has selected a suitable rolling method and core.
Keep the folder or box closed to reduce dust and light, but do not seal a damp object inside. Store it in a clean, stable interior room rather than an attic, basement, garage or shed.

Avoid environmental extremes
Heat accelerates chemical change. High relative humidity can cause swelling, waviness, chemical degradation and mold; repeated swings can stress paper and adhesives. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises avoiding attics, basements and other unstable locations, as well as direct heat and low-quality framing materials. A stable household environment is preferable to a space that cycles between hot and cold or dry and damp.

Know when professional conservation is the safer choice
Consult a qualified paper conservator or conservation framer before framing if the poster is particularly valuable, brittle, torn, stained, mold-affected, flaking, heavily folded, covered with unknown tape or showing damage that is getting worse. Professional assessment is also prudent when the poster will be handled frequently, is unusually large or has uncertain inks or previous treatments.
A conservator can examine the fibers and media, determine whether the sheet can be safely mounted, and specify a reversible support. They can also advise on cleaning, repair, humidification and flattening. These treatments are condition-dependent; a generic online recipe can turn a stable poster into a permanently stained, cockled or weakened one.
Do not attempt to wash the paper, erase marks, remove tape, humidify folds, flatten it under weights or touch up faded ink without an examination. Water, solvents, pressure and heat can solubilize inks, transfer coatings, break brittle fibers or spread stains. Faded color cannot be returned to its former intensity by a frame or household restoration method.
Inspect and maintain the framed poster
Check the frame periodically for a shifted sheet, new waviness, condensation, mold odor, loose corners, insect evidence, scratches in acrylic or a backing that has bowed. Inspect in normal room light rather than opening the frame unnecessarily. Photograph any change and compare it with the original condition record.
If condensation appears inside the package, the poster touches the glazing, or the frame has been dropped, move it to a stable, dim location and have the assembly assessed. Do not open a damaged frame over an exposed table where the sheet could fall or catch on a corner.
Clean the outside of glass or acrylic with a product and cloth recommended for that glazing, applying liquid to the cloth rather than spraying the frame. Keep all moisture away from frame joints and the mat opening. If dust has entered the package or the glazing is scratched, ask a conservator or conservation framer to disassemble and rebuild it.
A practical decision checklist
- Value: Is the original rare, signed, historically important or expensive enough that irreversible fading would matter?
- Condition: Is the paper flexible and stable, or brittle, torn, flaking, stained or previously repaired?
- Exposure: Can you provide low light, no direct sun and a limited display schedule?
- Frame: Will the package use stable 4-ply-or-thicker mat board, UV-filtering glazing, a spacer and rigid backing?
- Mounting: Can the poster be held with non-adhesive corners or reversible hinges rather than tape or glue?
- Storage: Is there an acid-free folder or box in a stable interior room away from heat, humidity swings, attics and basements?
- Expertise: Would an examination prevent a risky cleaning, repair, humidification or flattening attempt?
If several answers are unfavorable, store the original and display a reproduction. If the answers are favorable, a properly separated, conservator-specified frame and controlled exposure offer the best practical protection while the original is visible.
