Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere are two different things to prepare: the USB stick’s filesystem or partition layout, and the floppy-disk image that the emulator presents to the host machine. For FlashFloppy image-file mode, format the stick as FAT32; exFAT and NTFS are not supported. HxC firmware can instead use ordinary image files, mount a folder through a blank DOS image, or emulate floppy-sized USB partitions. Identify the firmware, version, target machine and operating mode before formatting, because the wrong layout can erase data or leave the emulator unable to boot an image.
Start by separating the USB format from the floppy image format
A USB flash drive is only the storage medium. The emulator reads that medium and then exposes a virtual floppy disk to a computer, synthesizer, CNC controller or other host. The storage medium and the virtual disk can therefore have different formats.

- USB filesystem or partition layout: how files or emulator-ready partitions are arranged on the stick. FAT32 is required by FlashFloppy in its documented image-file setup. HxC partition mode uses dedicated layouts rather than a normal, general-purpose format.
- Floppy image: the file or virtual disk that contains the sectors, geometry and encoding expected by the host machine. Examples include HFE, IMG and, in FlashFloppy configurations, raw IMG/IMA images.
Changing a filename extension does not convert the data inside an image. An arbitrary file renamed from .img to .hfe remains invalid. The image must be created or exported in a format and geometry supported by both the emulator firmware and the target machine.

Choose the operating mode before you format anything
| Mode | Firmware or version requirement | What the USB contains | Filesystem or layout | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FlashFloppy image-file mode | FlashFloppy firmware | Disk-image files selected by the emulator | FAT32; exFAT and NTFS are unsupported | Image compatibility, configuration-file location and selector behavior still matter |
| HxC image-file mode | HxC firmware for Gotek | Supported image files such as HFE or IMG | Use the filesystem and naming arrangement described for the installation | Support varies by target machine; indexed operation without a display can require DSKAxxxx names |
| HxC folder emulation | Firmware v3.2.1.1a or later | A source directory ending in .mnt, plus a blank DOS image |
A FAT-capable blank image at /mount/emptyfat.img |
The blank image may be 720 KB, 1.44 MB or another compatible size; firmware creates a mounted copy |
| HxC USB partition emulation | Firmware v3.5.1.1a or later | Floppy-sized USB partitions, not ordinary image files alone | Documented GPT, MBR, no-partition or compatible batch-tool layout | GPT supports up to 128 floppy partitions; MBR supports up to 4 and is recommended by HxC for older operating systems |
These are separate workflows. A FAT32 stick prepared for FlashFloppy should not be substituted for an HxC partition-emulation layout unless the HxC instructions for your firmware explicitly call for it.

Safe preparation checklist
Formatting is destructive. HxC specifically warns that its built-in USB formatting operation erases the drive. Complete these checks before connecting the stick to the emulator:
- Copy every needed file from the USB stick to another drive.
- Record the emulator firmware name and exact version shown by its menu, display or update utility.
- Identify the host machine and its expected floppy geometry, encoding and capacity.
- Decide whether you will select image files, mount a folder, or emulate USB partitions.
- Keep the image files in a separate backup until the host has successfully read and written a test disk.
- Use the firmware’s own documentation for any special image writer, partition template or naming convention.
FlashFloppy: format a USB stick for image-file mode
FlashFloppy’s documented requirement is explicit: the USB drive must be formatted with FAT32. ExFAT and NTFS are not supported. This requirement applies to the USB storage filesystem, not to the image file’s internal floppy format.
Step 1: confirm the installation and target
Verify that FlashFloppy is installed and that the emulator is connected to the correct host interface. Confirm the host’s disk format before selecting an image; a FAT32 storage stick does not make every floppy image compatible with every machine.

Step 2: back up and format the stick as FAT32
- Copy the stick’s existing contents to a safe location.
- Use your operating system’s removable-drive formatter, select the correct USB device, and choose FAT32.
- Do not choose exFAT or NTFS for this FlashFloppy workflow.
- Safely eject and reconnect the stick so the operating system has completed the format before copying images.
If the operating system does not offer FAT32 for the device, do not improvise with a different filesystem. Use a formatter documented for the device and firmware, or follow the project’s supported preparation method.

Step 3: copy a compatible image
Copy a disk image documented as compatible with the target system to the FAT32 stick. FlashFloppy can use raw image types such as IMG or IMA when the appropriate configuration describes their geometry and encoding. The file extension alone is not a conversion.
Step 4: check configuration-file placement
FlashFloppy can use configuration files such as FF.CFG and IMG.CFG. A subtle layout rule can explain why a correctly formatted stick still behaves unexpectedly: if an FF/ subfolder exists, configuration files in the root are not searched. Put configuration files where the firmware expects them, or remove an unintended FF/ directory after preserving any files it contains.
Step 5: select and mount the image
Insert the stick, use the emulator’s selector to choose the image and mount it, then start the host machine. If the host reports an unformatted disk or read error, stop before writing over the image and check geometry, encoding and configuration rather than reformatting the USB stick again.

HFE
HFE is HxC’s encoded floppy-image format and is described as universal for its native HxC format. It is useful when the image was produced for HxC’s encoding and the host’s disk behavior is represented correctly.
IMG and other machine-specific formats
HxC lists IMG for PC-compatible machines and separates support by machine family. Do not assume that an IMG file made for a PC will work in a proprietary workstation, synthesizer or controller. Consult the format table for the exact target and verify the image’s geometry.
Indexed selection and filename rules
Some HxC indexed-mode installations without a display require names in the DSKAxxxx style. The selector may use the number embedded in the name rather than a directory listing. If buttons appear to select the wrong slot, inspect the naming convention before changing the USB filesystem.
Basic HxC image-file workflow
- Identify the HxC firmware version and host machine.
- Back up the USB stick.
- Prepare the filesystem or directory arrangement specified for that HxC installation.
- Copy an image in a format listed for the target machine, such as HFE or a supported IMG variant.
- Apply any required indexed filename convention.
- Insert the stick, select the image and test a read-only boot or directory listing before allowing the host to write.
HxC folder emulation: mount a directory as a virtual floppy
Folder emulation is not the same as copying a floppy image. It adds files from a selected USB directory into a mounted FAT/DOS floppy image. The feature is available from HxC firmware v3.2.1.1a or later.

Required files and directories
- Place a blank, preformatted DOS IMG at
/mount/emptyfat.img. - Create a source directory whose name ends in
.mnt, for examplemyvirtualdisk.mnt. - Use a blank image of a size supported by the host. The manual gives 720 KB and 1.44 MB as examples and allows another FAT-compatible blank image where appropriate.
Preparation procedure
- Make a backup of the USB contents.
- Obtain or create a blank DOS IMG with the correct FAT geometry for the target machine.
- Create the
mountdirectory on the USB storage and copy the blank image to/mount/emptyfat.img. - Create a directory ending in
.mntand place the files you want the host to see inside it. - Insert the stick and select the folder-mount entry using the HxC interface.
- Allow the firmware to create the mounted copy, then test the host’s directory listing.
The manual states that the blank image remains untouched while the firmware creates a mounted copy. Keep that source image unchanged so it can be reused if the mount source becomes damaged.
HxC USB partition emulation
Partition emulation presents floppy-sized USB partitions directly to the host. It is a specialized HxC mode, available from firmware v3.5.1.1a or later, and it should not be treated as a normal FAT32 formatting exercise.
Supported layouts
| Layout | Documented capability | When it may be appropriate |
|---|---|---|
| GPT | Up to 128 floppy partitions | Large collections on systems whose firmware and operating system handle GPT |
| MBR | Up to 4 floppy partitions | HxC recommends this for older operating systems |
| No partition | One floppy image | A single-image setup that does not need a partition table |
| Original Gotek Batch Manage Tool compatibility | Uses the documented legacy arrangement | Installations already built around that tool |
HxC says the firmware recognizes a prepared layout automatically. Its documentation also points to supplied Image_Less_Mode images and an image writer for some setups. Use those supplied assets and the version-matched procedure instead of creating a generic partition table by guesswork.
Built-in HxC formatting
The built-in HxC USB formatting mode is documented for firmware v3.8.0.0 and later. It erases the USB drive, so verify the device identity and complete a backup before invoking it. If your firmware is older, do not assume the menu exists or that a newer procedure applies.

How to choose the floppy image format
Choose the image according to the host controller and the firmware’s support table, not according to the USB stick’s filesystem.
- Use HFE when the target and firmware support HxC’s encoded format and the image was generated with the required track and encoding information.
- Use IMG when the target is listed as compatible and the image has the correct sector layout. HxC’s documentation specifically identifies IMG for PC-compatible machines, but that does not establish universal support.
- Use IMG or IMA with FlashFloppy only when the corresponding geometry and encoding are described in
IMG.CFGor the applicable configuration. - Use a blank FAT/DOS IMG for folder emulation only when the HxC folder-mount feature and target accept that geometry.
Some HxC software and firmware combinations allow custom floppy formats. That flexibility does not remove the need to match the host’s physical expectations: track count, sector count, data rate, encoding and disk capacity must all agree.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The emulator does not see the USB stick
- For FlashFloppy image-file mode, verify that the stick is FAT32 rather than exFAT or NTFS.
- For HxC partition mode, verify the dedicated GPT, MBR, no-partition or legacy layout instead of assuming ordinary FAT32 is sufficient.
- Check that the firmware version supports the selected mode.
- Recheck that you formatted the intended removable drive and that the operating system completed the operation.
The stick is visible, but no image appears
- Confirm that the file extension and internal format match a supported image type; renaming does not convert an image.
- For FlashFloppy, inspect whether an
FF/directory is preventing root configuration files from being found. - For HxC indexed mode without a display, check the required
DSKAxxxxnaming pattern. - Confirm that the image is in a directory the firmware scans rather than in an unrelated folder.
The image mounts but the host reports an invalid or unformatted disk
- Check the target machine’s geometry and encoding against the image format table.
- Use the correct HFE, IMG, IMG/IMA configuration or blank DOS image for that host.
- For folder emulation, verify that
/mount/emptyfat.imgis a blank FAT-compatible image and that the source directory ends in.mnt. - Test with a known-compatible image before changing the USB layout; otherwise you may hide an image problem behind repeated formatting.
The host can read but cannot write reliably
Stop using the image for important data and check that the virtual disk geometry, sector layout and write-protect behavior match the host. A successful directory listing proves only that the host can read the mounted structure; it does not prove that every write operation is represented correctly by the emulator and image format.
Formatting erased files
Restore the backup rather than attempting recovery through the emulator. HxC’s formatting function is explicitly destructive, and any operating-system format operation can also remove the existing directory and image files.
A repeatable test plan
- Prepare a spare or backed-up USB stick.
- Write only one known-compatible image or one controlled folder mount.
- Boot the host or open its disk menu and confirm the expected volume label or directory contents.
- Read several files before testing a write.
- Make a small, nonessential write, eject through the host’s normal procedure and verify the result from another read.
- Only then add additional images, mount directories or partitions.
This staged approach distinguishes a USB-layout error from an incompatible floppy image and limits the damage if the host writes a format the emulator does not represent correctly.
Quick Recap
Key rules to remember
- FAT32 is a FlashFloppy image-file-mode requirement, not a universal rule for every floppy emulator.
- HFE, IMG and IMG/IMA describe virtual floppy data; they are not replacements for the USB stick’s filesystem.
- HxC folder emulation needs firmware v3.2.1.1a or later,
/mount/emptyfat.imgand a.mntsource directory. - HxC partition emulation needs firmware v3.5.1.1a or later and a documented partition layout; GPT, MBR and no-partition arrangements serve different compatibility needs.
- HxC’s built-in formatting mode is documented for v3.8.0.0 and later and erases the drive.
- Always identify the firmware, target machine and operating mode before formatting or writing an image.
