How to Forget a Wi‑Fi Network on iPhone and Android

To forget a saved Wi‑Fi network, remove its stored connection from your phone’s Wi‑Fi settings. On iPhone, go to Settings > Wi‑Fi > Edit, select the network’s More Info control, tap Forget This Network, and confirm. On Android, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet, touch and hold the saved network, then tap Forget.

Forgetting deletes the saved network and password from that device, so it will not automatically reconnect. If you only want to stop an iPhone from joining automatically while keeping the password, turn off Auto-Join instead.

Quick paths for each phone

Phone Menu path Final action
iPhone Settings > Wi‑Fi > Edit Tap the More Info control beside the network, choose Forget This Network, then confirm with Forget.
Android phones Settings > Network & internet > Internet Touch and hold the saved network, then tap Forget.
Google Pixel Settings > Network & internet > Internet > Saved networks Select the network and tap Forget.

Android manufacturers can rename or rearrange these controls. The exact labels also depend on the Android release. The general Android route above follows Google’s current guidance; the Pixel route is a documented example, not a universal path for every Android phone.

What “forget” does

Forgetting removes the saved Wi‑Fi relationship from the phone, including the password stored for that network. The phone can still detect the network when it is nearby, but it will no longer join automatically using the deleted credentials. To use that Wi‑Fi again, select it and enter the security details so the phone can save the network again.

Forgetting is different from disconnecting temporarily. Disconnecting ends the current connection but leaves the network profile on the phone. A saved profile can still be used for automatic reconnection later; a forgotten profile cannot.

Forgetting also does not make the network disappear from the list of nearby Wi‑Fi networks. Discovery and saved-network management are separate functions.

How to forget a Wi‑Fi network on iPhone

Forget any saved network from the Edit list

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Wi‑Fi.
  3. Tap Edit. The iPhone shows networks it knows, including networks that may not be in range at that moment.
  4. Find the network you want to remove.
  5. Tap the More Info control next to that network.
  6. Tap Forget This Network.
  7. Tap Forget again when the confirmation prompt appears.

After confirmation, the saved profile and password are removed from the iPhone. If the network is currently nearby, it can still appear in the available-network list because forgetting does not disable Wi‑Fi discovery.

Forget the network you are using now

When the iPhone is connected to the network, open its network information page from Settings > Wi‑Fi. Choose Forget This Network, then confirm with Forget. The phone disconnects as the saved profile is removed.

Use Auto‑Join when you want to keep the password

If the problem is automatic connections rather than the stored password, open the network’s information page in Settings > Wi‑Fi and turn off Auto‑Join. The iPhone keeps the saved network and password but stops joining it automatically. You can connect manually later by selecting the network.

Apple’s instructions describe the change taking effect after the phone disconnects—for example, when Wi‑Fi is toggled or the iPhone moves out of range. Turning off Auto‑Join is therefore the less destructive option when you may need the network again without re-entering its password.

How to forget a Wi‑Fi network on Android

Use the standard Android Settings route

  1. Open the phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Network & internet.
  3. Tap Internet.
  4. Locate the saved network. Depending on the phone, you may need to scroll through the list or open a saved-networks area.
  5. Touch and hold the network name.
  6. Tap Forget.

The saved network and its password are removed from that Android device. If the network is still broadcasting nearby, it can remain visible as an available network; visibility does not mean the old credentials are still stored.

Pixel phones: open Saved networks

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & internet.
  3. Tap Internet.
  4. Tap Saved networks.
  5. Select the network you want to remove.
  6. Tap Forget and confirm if the phone asks.

Google documents this path for Pixel phones. Other Android manufacturers may use different names, place saved networks behind a three-dot menu, or expose the Forget command only after opening the network details.

Forget the network or disable Auto‑Join?

Goal Choose Result
Delete the stored password and profile Forget This Network on iPhone or Forget on Android The phone removes the saved relationship and will require the security details the next time you connect.
Keep the password but stop automatic connections Turn off Auto‑Join on iPhone The network remains saved, but the iPhone waits for you to choose it manually.
End the current connection only Disconnect or turn Wi‑Fi off temporarily The saved profile remains, so the phone may reconnect automatically later.

The official Android guidance covered here documents forgetting a saved network. Android phones can have manufacturer-specific controls, but an equivalent alternate setting is not consistent across devices. On iPhone, Auto‑Join is the clearly documented way to prevent automatic connections while retaining credentials.

Important iPhone caveats

iCloud Keychain can affect other Apple devices

If multiple Apple devices use iCloud Keychain with the same Apple Account, forgetting a Wi‑Fi network on one device also removes it from those other devices. Before confirming, consider whether you want the network deleted across that group rather than only from the iPhone in your hand.

Managed or supervised devices may restrict the control

Apple notes that some supervised devices and managed networks may not offer Forget This Network or the ability to disable Auto‑Join. A work, school, or other administrator can impose those restrictions. If the controls are missing, the limitation may be intentional rather than a fault in the phone.

Why you might still see the network afterward

A common misunderstanding is that forgetting should erase every trace of a network from the Wi‑Fi screen. It does not. A nearby access point continues to broadcast its network name, and the phone can continue to list it as available. Forgetting only removes the phone’s saved credentials and automatic-connection relationship.

If your issue is repeated alerts about nearby public networks, that is a notification preference rather than a saved-network problem. Changing that preference addresses discovery notifications; forgetting a saved network addresses automatic joining to a network the phone already knows.

If the Forget control is missing

On iPhone

  • Open Settings > Wi‑Fi and tap the network’s More Info control before looking for Forget This Network.
  • Use Edit to view known networks that are not currently in range.
  • If the option still does not appear, check whether the iPhone is supervised or the Wi‑Fi profile is managed by an organization.

On Android

  • Confirm that you are in Settings > Network & internet > Internet, not only the quick settings panel.
  • Touch and hold the saved network; on some phones, a single tap opens details and a three-dot menu contains Forget.
  • Search Settings for the network name or for Wi‑Fi if the labels in the standard route do not appear.
  • Check the phone maker’s support instructions when the device uses a customized Android interface.

Google notes that some of its Android steps apply to Android 12 and later. Menu names and availability can vary by device and software version, so a missing label does not necessarily indicate that the function has been removed.

Reconnect after forgetting

  1. Open the phone’s Wi‑Fi settings.
  2. Choose the network from the available list when it is in range.
  3. Enter the Wi‑Fi password or other required security details.
  4. Complete any sign-in page required by a public or guest network.

The phone saves the network again only after a successful connection and normal credential-saving behavior. If you do not want it to reconnect automatically in the future, use the iPhone’s Auto‑Join control after reconnecting, where available.

Choosing the right fix

  • The phone keeps joining the wrong access point: Forget the saved network so the old credentials and automatic relationship are removed.
  • You are troubleshooting a password or authentication change: Forget the network, then reconnect and enter the current security details.
  • You may need the network later but do not want automatic connections: On iPhone, turn off Auto‑Join instead of forgetting it.
  • You are giving the phone to someone else: Forget saved networks that should not remain on the device, while remembering that iCloud Keychain may propagate the change to other Apple devices using the same Apple Account.
  • You are trying to hide a nearby network: Forgetting will not do that; the network can remain discoverable while it is broadcasting.

Platform differences at a glance

Detail iPhone Android
Primary forget control Forget This Network Forget
Typical entry point Settings > Wi‑Fi, then the network’s More Info control or Edit Settings > Network & internet > Internet
Saved-network list Edit reveals networks known to the iPhone Often listed directly or under Saved networks; placement varies
Alternative to deleting credentials Turn off Auto‑Join No single equivalent route is consistent across Android devices
Cross-device effect iCloud Keychain can remove the network from other Apple devices on the same Apple Account The documented action removes the profile from the Android device; manufacturer and account behavior can vary

Official guidance

Apple Support’s current guidance, “Forget a Wi‑Fi network or prevent your device from automatically joining it,” covers the iPhone controls, Auto‑Join behavior, iCloud Keychain effects, and managed-device limitations. Google Android Help’s “Connect to Wi‑Fi networks on your Android device” documents the standard Android route and version-dependent menu differences. Google Pixel Phone Help’s “How to fix Wi‑Fi connection problems” documents the Saved networks path on Pixel phones. These instructions were current in the guidance accessed on October 13, 2026.
