Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If one app is frozen but the rest of your phone responds, close or force-stop that app rather than restarting the entire device. On an iPhone, use the App Switcher; on Android, use Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Force stop (the labels vary by manufacturer). If the whole phone is frozen, use the phone’s restart or force-restart procedure instead. These are different actions, and deleting an app or clearing its data should be a last resort because locally stored information may be lost.
The steps below follow Apple and Google’s current support guidance, with model and manufacturer differences called out explicitly. You do not need a special app, cable, accessory, repair tool or paid utility to try these built-in recovery steps.

First decide whether the app or the phone is stuck
Tap another app, open the Home Screen, or pull down a system panel. If those actions work and only one app will not respond, recover that app. If taps and buttons do nothing anywhere, the operating system itself may be frozen and you need a device-level restart.

| One iPhone app is unresponsive | Open the App Switcher and swipe away that app | Closes the selected app; the iPhone remains on |
| One Android app is unresponsive | Settings > Apps > See all apps > select the app > Force stop | Stops that app’s process; the phone remains on |
| The whole iPhone is frozen | Force-restart the iPhone with its button sequence | Restarts iOS and every running process |
| The whole Android phone is frozen | Hold Power for about 60 seconds on Google’s reference Android version | Restarts the device; other Android models may use different buttons |
Do not swipe away every open app as routine maintenance. Apple says, “You should only close an app if it’s unresponsive,” because iPhone manages background apps without requiring routine quitting. The same principle applies on Android: target the app that is actually misbehaving.

Before you force close anything
Give the app a moment if it is processing a large file, syncing, or loading a page over a weak connection. If the screen eventually responds, save or sync any work before closing it. A force close or force stop ends the running process; it does not provide an opportunity to save an unsent draft.
Note whether other apps respond and whether the problem happens every time or only once. This distinction helps you choose the least disruptive action and gives useful information to support later. If the phone is hot, showing a low-storage warning, or repeatedly losing connectivity, record those symptoms rather than immediately deleting the app.
Close and reopen a frozen app on iPhone
Apple’s app-closing instructions differ according to whether the iPhone has a Home button. Closing an app from the App Switcher is an app-level action, not a restart of the phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsiPhone X and later
- Start at the Home Screen.
- Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause in the middle of the screen. Keep your finger paused until the App Switcher appears.
- Swipe sideways through the app previews until you find the unresponsive app.
- Swipe up on that app’s preview to close it.
- Return to the Home Screen or App Library and tap the app’s icon to open it again.
If the app opens normally, you have completed the recovery. If it immediately freezes again, leave it closed and continue with the update and restart checks in the later troubleshooting section.
iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and earlier Home-button models
- Double-click the Home button to display the App Switcher.
- Swipe sideways to locate the affected app.
- Swipe up on its preview.
- Open the app again from the Home Screen or App Library.
The gesture closes only the selected app. It does not repair a wider iOS problem and does not restart the iPhone.
If the app is not visible in the App Switcher, it may already have closed. Reopen it from the Home Screen or App Library and see whether the behavior repeats. Avoid repeatedly swiping through every preview; the goal is to close the affected app only.
Force-restart an iPhone when the entire device is frozen
Use a force restart only when the iPhone will not respond and you cannot turn it off and on normally. Apple’s current guide for the cited models uses this sequence:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then release the Side button.
This sequence is for the current iPhone models covered by Apple’s guide at Apple’s force-restart instructions. Older iPhone designs can use different button combinations, so check Apple’s model-specific support guidance if your buttons do not match. A force restart reboots the whole phone; it is not the same as swiping one app away.

Force stop one unresponsive app on Android
Google’s general Android route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap See all apps (or the equivalent list option).
- Select the app that is frozen.
- Tap Force stop.
- Confirm with OK if Android asks.
- Open the app again from the Home Screen or app drawer.
The exact wording and location can differ among Android manufacturers and software versions. If you cannot find See all apps, use your Settings search for the app’s name or “Force stop,” then follow the matching manufacturer instructions. Google documents the general path in its Android app troubleshooting guide.
Force stop acts on the selected app. It does not restart Android, and it does not erase the app’s saved data by itself. Do not tap Clear data or uninstall the app merely because you found the Force stop screen; those are separate, potentially destructive choices.
Some Android phones show the app’s permissions, battery or storage controls on the same page. Those controls are not substitutes for Force stop. If you are unsure which entry is the affected app, check its icon and name before confirming so you do not stop a different application.
Restart a frozen Android phone
When the screen, buttons, and other apps all stop responding, an app-level force stop may be impossible. Google’s instructions for the Android version shown in its support material say to hold the Power button for about 60 seconds to restart the phone. Release it when the device begins restarting.
That timing is not a universal Android rule. Google explicitly describes a particular Android version and directs readers to their phone manufacturer when the procedure does not work. Button combinations, the required hold time, and whether a Power-plus-Volume shortcut is used can vary by device. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model rather than repeatedly trying an unrelated sequence. The general guidance is at Google’s Android frozen-device help page.
If only one app is frozen and Settings still opens, do not use the device-level restart first. A whole-phone restart interrupts calls, media, navigation and other work, while Force stop is limited to the faulty app.
What to do after the app opens—or freezes again
A successful close or force stop is a useful first recovery, but a recurring failure needs a controlled sequence. Work through the relevant platform’s steps in order so you can identify whether an update or the app itself is the problem.

iPhone escalation sequence
- Close and reopen the app. Use the App Switcher procedure for your iPhone model.
- Restart the iPhone normally. Use the standard power-off and power-on controls if the phone responds; use the force-restart sequence only when it does not.
- Check for an app update. Open the App Store, check the account’s available updates, and install an update for the affected app if one is offered.
- Check for an iOS update. In Settings, open the Software Update area and install an available update that your iPhone supports.
- Delete and redownload the app only after those checks. Apple warns that deleting an app can remove data stored inside that app. Verify that important information is synchronized or backed up before deleting it.
- Contact the app developer. If other apps work but this app continues to stop responding after the sequence, the developer is the appropriate next contact.
Apple’s complete escalation guidance is available in its support article for apps that stop responding, close unexpectedly, or will not open.
Android escalation sequence
- Restart the phone. If it responds, use the normal restart control; if the entire device is frozen, use the manufacturer-appropriate procedure.
- Install app updates. Check Google Play for an update to the affected app.
- Install system updates. Open your phone’s software-update settings and apply an available Android or manufacturer update.
- Force stop the app. Return to Settings > Apps, select the app, and use Force stop.
- Consider clearing the cache. Android menu names differ, but the app’s storage page may offer a cache-clearing option. Read the confirmation text before accepting it.
- Consider clearing app data or uninstalling. These are later steps, not interchangeable with Force stop. Check the app’s own backup or synchronization status first because information stored only on the phone can be removed.
- Contact the developer if the failure is isolated to one app. A developer can identify an app-specific defect or account problem that device settings cannot fix.
Google’s sequence and its manufacturer-variation warning are covered in the Android app troubleshooting guide. The phone-freezing procedure is in Google’s device troubleshooting guide.
Understand the data-loss risks before using destructive options
Closing an app on iPhone, force stopping an Android app, and restarting a phone are recovery actions. They are not the same as deleting the app or clearing its stored data.
- App close or force stop: targets the running app. Reopen it and see whether the problem was temporary.
- Restart: reloads the phone’s operating system and all apps. It is appropriate when the device itself is unresponsive.
- Clear cache: may be available on Android and removes cached files, but the exact behavior and menu vary by device.
- Clear data or uninstall: can remove information saved only inside the app. Confirm backups, cloud synchronization, login details, and any app-specific export options before proceeding.
On iPhone, Apple specifically warns about data stored in an app when recommending deletion and redownloading. On Android, Google likewise places data clearing and uninstalling after restart, updates, and force stop, with settings varying by phone. If the app contains drafts, downloaded files, offline content, or unsynchronized records, treat deletion as a potential data-loss event rather than a routine fix.
Cloud synchronization is not automatic for every app or every type of content. A visible account login does not by itself prove that drafts or offline files are backed up. Check the app’s own backup, export or sync status before removing anything.
Check storage when Android apps keep failing
Google publishes this troubleshooting clue: “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” This is a general threshold in Google’s guidance, not proof that low storage caused a particular app freeze. Check available storage in your phone’s Settings and free space only after protecting important files and app data.
Storage pressure is one reason to inspect large downloads, unused apps, and media, but do not delete an app’s data just to make the warning disappear. Confirm what each cleanup option removes, and preserve anything that has not synchronized elsewhere.

App close versus phone restart: the practical choice
| Question | iPhone | Android |
|---|---|---|
| How do I close one frozen app? | App Switcher: swipe up and pause on iPhone X and later; double-click Home on iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and earlier; swipe up on the app preview. | Settings > Apps > See all apps > choose the app > Force stop > OK. |
| When should I restart the whole phone? | When iOS or the screen is unresponsive, or when closing and reopening the app does not resolve a recurring failure. | When the entire phone is frozen or the app remains broken after the initial app-level steps. |
| What varies by model? | App-Switcher access differs between Home-button and gesture-based iPhones; force-restart buttons can differ on older models. | Settings labels and frozen-phone button behavior vary by manufacturer and Android version. |
| Which later steps can risk app data? | Deleting and redownloading an app may remove data stored in it. | Clearing app data or uninstalling can remove locally stored information; check backups first. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Swiping away every app
Routine app quitting is unnecessary on iPhone and can make troubleshooting less precise. Close the single app that is actually unresponsive, then reopen it. On Android, use Force stop for the affected app instead of treating the app overview as a general maintenance checklist.

Using a phone restart for a single-app problem
A restart can help, but it interrupts everything and does not identify whether the app itself needs an update. Try the platform’s app-level action first when the rest of the phone responds.
Assuming Android instructions are universal
Google’s Settings > Apps > See all apps route is a general reference. Your manufacturer may rename menus or place Force stop elsewhere. Search Settings or use the device maker’s documentation when the labels do not match.
Clearing data before checking backups
Force stop is reversible; clearing data and uninstalling may not be. Check synchronization and backups before accepting a destructive confirmation, particularly for apps that store drafts or offline records.
Installing a “cleaner” or repair app
These instructions use controls already built into iOS and Android. A third-party cleaner, booster, paid repair utility or accessory is not required to close an app or restart a phone, and installing another app while storage or system behavior is unstable can add another variable.
When the problem needs the app developer or device support
Escalate when the same app repeatedly freezes after closing, restarting, and installing available updates, especially if other apps work normally. The app developer can investigate an app-specific defect. Seek device-manufacturer or Apple support when multiple apps freeze, the phone repeatedly becomes unresponsive, updates cannot install, or the model’s restart controls do not behave as documented.
Keep the app name, phone model, operating-system version, and the exact step that fails. That information helps support distinguish an app fault from a broader device problem without immediately resorting to data-erasing measures.
Quick decision checklist
- Test the Home Screen or another app.
- If only one app is stuck, close it on iPhone or Force stop it on Android.
- Reopen it once and check whether the issue has cleared.
- If the whole phone is frozen, use the correct device-level restart procedure for the model.
- Install app and system updates before deleting anything.
- Check backups before clearing Android data or deleting an iPhone app.
- Contact the developer or device manufacturer if the failure persists.

How do I restart a frozen Android phone?
Google’s reference procedure says to hold the Power button for about 60 seconds. Android manufacturers can use different hold times or button combinations, so follow the instructions for your exact model if that does not work.
Can low storage make an Android app freeze?
Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free. That is a general troubleshooting threshold, not proof that storage caused a particular crash.
Should I swipe away every open app?
No. Close or force-stop the app that is actually unresponsive. Apple says routine quitting is unnecessary because iPhone manages background apps.
Do I need a special app or accessory to fix this?
No. The recovery steps use built-in App Switcher, Settings and hardware controls. No physical product is specifically needed.
The Bottom Line
When one app is stuck, close that app on iPhone or use Android’s Force stop command. When the entire phone is frozen, restart the device using the model-appropriate sequence. Update the app and operating system before clearing data or deleting anything, and verify backups first because destructive steps can erase locally stored information.
