For the authoritative result of a U.S. election, check the relevant state or local election office and its certification record. Election-night totals are preliminary and unofficial; a news organization’s projection or race call is its own assessment, not government certification. The distinction matters because counting, canvassing and other required steps can continue after election night.
Where do I find election results?
Start with the election authority responsible for the contest: the state or local election office. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) directs voters to state and territory election websites for election information. On the relevant office’s results page, check who published the figures, the last-updated time, the status label and which contests or jurisdictions the page covers.

Election-night reporting systems collect, aggregate and share unofficial returns; they are useful for seeing results develop, but they do not make those returns certified. The EAC’s guidance is direct: “Only election officials provide official election results.” (EAC election results guidance.)

What do “projected,” “called,” “unofficial” and “certified” mean?
| Label | Who applies it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Unofficial results or returns | Election offices and reporting systems displaying election-night or ongoing totals | Votes reported so far; eligible ballots may remain to be counted, and the results have not completed certification. |
| Projected or called | A news organization | The newsroom’s judgment about the likely outcome, according to its own methods. It is not an election authority’s certified result. |
| Certified results | The responsible election official or authority | The official attestation of the final accounting after required post-election processes. The specific record and date depend on the jurisdiction and contest. |
These labels answer different questions. An unofficial total reports the count at a particular point; a media call assesses whether the outcome is effectively decided; certification is an official step in the election process. Attribute a call to the newsroom that made it rather than treating it as a government announcement.

For example, the Associated Press says it calls a race only when it is fully confident that trailing candidates no longer have a path to victory. That describes AP’s own methodology, not a universal standard for newsrooms and not certification by election officials. (AP’s role in elections.)
Why do election results change after election night?
Election-night totals are an incomplete snapshot, even when a results page says “100% of precincts reporting.” That phrase describes precinct reporting status; it does not mean every eligible ballot has been counted or every post-election procedure is complete.

Eligible mail, provisional, military and overseas ballots may be counted later under the applicable state rules. The canvass also checks and reconciles records and vote totals. As those steps proceed, reported totals can change. A change or delay by itself is not evidence of misconduct; consult the responsible election office for the explanation and status of a particular contest. The EAC explains why totals can change and when results become final in its voter FAQ.
What happens between election night and certification?
The broad sequence is similar across U.S. elections, but the details and order vary by state and sometimes locality. The election authority’s calendar and notices govern the specific contest.

- Unofficial returns are released. After polls close, local officials publish returns as quickly as possible. Reporting systems may aggregate those figures for public viewing.
- Eligible ballots are processed and counted. Officials continue to handle ballots that state rules allow to be counted after Election Day, including eligible mail, provisional, military and overseas ballots.
- The canvass reconciles the record. Officials confirm and reconcile valid ballots, voter records and totals, and address discrepancies.
- Audits or recounts may occur. Many states conduct audits under their own processes. A recount is an additional count that may affect official results; its triggers and rules vary.
- Results are certified. After required processes are complete, the responsible officials attest to the final accounting. Certification is the official result, not a newsroom call.
The EAC describes the roles of canvassing, audits, recounts and certification in its election-results guidance.

There is no single U.S.-wide certification date for every race. State and local deadlines differ, and recounts or other required steps can affect timing. To find out whether a specific result is final, use the election authority’s certification record for that contest and check its calendar or official notices. A media call, an unofficial results page and a “100% precincts reporting” indicator cannot answer that question on their own.
