To read a golf leaderboard, separate a player’s position from their score: position shows rank, the score-to-par total shows how far above or below par they are, and “Thru” shows how many holes they have completed in the current round. Check the current-round score as well, especially when players have completed different numbers of holes.
What the leaderboard columns mean
Columns differ among tours, broadcasts, and apps, so use the labels on the board in front of you. A PGA TOUR example separates these fields:

| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Position | The player’s current rank. “T2” means tied for second; the “T” describes a shared position, not a score. |
| Total | The player’s cumulative score relative to par, as presented on that board. |
| Thru | How many holes the player has completed in the current round. “F” indicates the player has finished the round on the cited board. |
| Round | The player’s score relative to par for the current round. |
| R1–R4 | Stroke totals for the individual rounds. |
| Strokes | The aggregate number of strokes taken. |
For example, the PGA TOUR’s 2026 PGA Championship leaderboard shows Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley tied at T2, each at -6 with F. Their position, score-to-par, and completed-round status are separate pieces of information. The board also shows individual-round totals and 274 strokes.
On PGA TOUR broadcast graphics, the comparable labels include TOTAL, THRU, and TODAY. A scorecard-style graphic can also show hole-by-hole marks. Names and layouts vary; do not assume every provider uses the same headings.

How to read under par, over par, and even par
A score-to-par figure compares the player’s strokes with the course’s par. A minus sign means under par, a plus sign means over par, and E means even with par. Before interpreting a number, check whether its column is score-to-par or a raw stroke count: -6 and 274 do not mean the same kind of thing.
A player may be even for the current round while still under par for the tournament. In the cited PGA TOUR example, the board separates a -6 total from an E round score. The total includes the tournament standing to that point; the round figure describes only the current round.

How to follow a round in progress
“Thru” tells you how many holes a player has completed, not how many remain. A player marked Thru 12 has completed three more holes than one marked Thru 9. Their scores reflect different amounts of play, so the live order is only a snapshot and can change as players finish holes.
“Today” or “Round” refers to the current round, not the cumulative tournament total. For instance, -2 today and -8 overall can coexist: the first is for the current round, while the second includes earlier rounds. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a specific tournament result.

How the leaderboard relates to the scorecard
A scorecard records strokes hole by hole. The PGA TOUR’s 2025 The Sentry Official Scorecard explains that, after each hole, the marker should confirm the player’s strokes and enter the gross score on the card, under stroke-play Rule 3.3b. Add the hole scores to get raw strokes; compare that count with the course’s par to express the result relative to par.
A leaderboard summarizes; a player’s scorecard can show the individual holes behind the summary. A paper scorecard and pencil are optional if you want to track a player hole by hole—neither is needed to understand a digital board.

What CUT means
CUT means the player has not qualified to continue under that event’s cut rules. The cutoff and qualification formula depend on the event, so there is no universal number to apply across tournaments. Check the event’s official regulations for its advancement rules; a CUT label on one leaderboard does not establish a rule for other events.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to compare players fairly
- Compare their cumulative score-to-par totals.
- Check each player’s Thru value to see whether they have completed the same number of holes.
- Compare current-round scores to understand how they are playing today.
- Use completed round totals if you want to see how they reached their current tournament score.
If the Thru values differ, one player may have more holes left to play. Avoid treating the displayed order as a final result until the round is complete.

Team leaderboards can use different calculations
Team events may combine player scores under their own rules. The International Golf Federation’s 2025 World Amateur Team Championship manual describes team standing to par through the holes completed and notes that a team total can change when a player’s score changes; the team score is not official until the round ends. That is a specific team-event example, not a calculation to assume for an individual leaderboard.
