The WT32P4C5-43S is a dual-processor board: an ESP32-P4 runs the main application and an ESP32-C5 or ESP32-C61 handles wireless functions. Flashing the wrong chip, using the wrong USB-C connector, or guessing image offsets can leave you with a board that appears dead. Confirm the board revision (reported as ZX4D30CE405-V1.3), target processor, connector and vendor image before you write anything. Use the manufacturer’s current manual and repositories for the board-specific filenames and offsets; the generic procedures below explain how to perform and recover the operation safely.
Understand what you are flashing
The WT32P4C5-43S combines two independent Espressif processors. The ESP32-P4 is the main application processor. It normally runs the display, camera, storage and user application. The companion ESP32-C5 or ESP32-C61 provides wireless connectivity and has its own firmware, boot process and debug path. A wireless “slave” image is not a substitute for the P4 application image.

| Target | Role | Firmware source | Connection to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESP32-P4 | Main application, display and peripherals | Wireless-Tag P4 board project/BSP or release for your revision | P4 programming or debug USB path identified by the manual and silkscreen |
| ESP32-C5 or ESP32-C61 | Wireless companion (“slave”) | Wireless-Tag C5/C61 slave project or release | Wireless-chip programming or debug path, separate from the P4 path |
The manufacturer describes the board as having a 4.3-inch, 800 × 480 display and USB interfaces for firmware download and debugging. Independent hardware coverage reports one high-speed USB-C connector for power/programming and another USB-C debug connector, plus separate debug connectors for the P4 and wireless processor. Connector names and button wiring can vary by revision, so do not infer the target from the connector shape alone.

Confirm the board revision and target
- Read the board marking and record the revision. ZX4D30CE405-V1.3 has been reported for this model, but use the marking on your board if it differs.
- Decide whether you are updating the main P4 application or the C5/C61 wireless firmware.
- Open the current Wireless-Tag manual and the repository or release that corresponds to that revision. Note the exact image filenames, flash addresses, security settings and required connector.
- Keep the two firmware packages in separate directories. Label each with its target processor to avoid selecting a C5/C61 binary in a P4 flashing session.
Inspect the physical interfaces
- Identify the high-speed USB-C interface and the separate debug USB-C interface described for the board. The manufacturer’s listing confirms multiple USB functions, but it does not establish that both connectors program the same processor.
- Locate any P4 and C5/C61 debug headers or test connectors. A 15-pin MIPI CSI camera connector and a 14-pin expansion header are also reported; neither should be assumed to be a programming port.
- Use a known-good data cable, not a charge-only cable. Connect the board directly to the computer while troubleshooting, rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Provide stable power. A brownout during erase or write can corrupt the bootloader and produce symptoms that look like a software mistake.
The exact manual PDF, boot-button labels and pin timing for this board revision were not verified here. Treat the silkscreen and the current Wireless-Tag documentation as authoritative for your hardware.

Install and prepare the flashing environment
Use the vendor image, not a guessed binary
Obtain the release intended for your processor and board revision. A C5/C61 slave repository can support both wireless chips while still being completely unsuitable for the main P4. Likewise, a P4 project image may contain board-specific partitioning or security settings that cannot be replaced by a generic ESP32-P4 example.
- Check that the release names the WT32P4C5-43S or your exact board revision.
- Keep all files in the release together if the vendor supplies a bootloader, partition table, application and data images.
- Record whether the release expects encrypted or plaintext bootloader and application images.
- Do not rename files in a way that loses their target or address information.
Choose command line or GUI
Espressif’s esptool is useful when you need explicit, repeatable image-and-address control. Espressif’s ESP32-P4 Flash Download Tool provides a graphical workflow. Its Develop mode is intended to flash one chip at a time, which is appropriate for careful board repair; Factory mode is designed for batch or production workflows. In either tool, selecting the correct chip does not automatically select the correct Wireless-Tag image or offset table.

How do I flash firmware to the WT32P4C5-43S?
Step 1: Put the board in a known state
- Disconnect other USB devices and close serial monitors that may hold the port.
- Connect the cable to the connector identified for the target processor in the manual.
- Note the operating system’s serial-port name (for example, a COM port on Windows or a device path on Linux).
- Leave the vendor’s bootloader, partition and application files unchanged until you have verified their addresses.
Step 2: Verify the image/address table
esptool writes one or more binary files as explicit address/image pairs. Its documentation uses a generic form such as:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
esptool --port COM4 write-flash 0x1000 my_app-0x01000.bin
This is an illustration of command syntax, not a WT32P4C5-43S recipe. Do not use 0x1000, the example filename or any other address unless the Wireless-Tag release for your board explicitly assigns it. A wrong offset can erase a valid boot component or leave the ROM unable to find the next-stage bootloader. Copy the complete address table from the vendor release into your command or GUI profile.

Step 3: Run the vendor-recommended command or Develop-mode profile
- Select the actual port connected to the target chip.
- Select ESP32-P4 when flashing the main board application, or the appropriate ESP32-C5/C61 target when flashing wireless firmware.
- Enter every supplied binary and its documented address. Include bootloader, partition table and application files only when the release instructs you to do so.
- Keep the board powered and still while erase/write/verify operations run.
- Save the complete tool log, including the detected chip, MAC address, erase ranges, write addresses and verification result.
Step 4: Reset and validate the target
After a successful verification, reset the same processor and watch its serial output. A successful write only proves that the tool communicated with flash; it does not prove that the application image is compatible or that you flashed the processor you intended. Confirm that the P4 application reaches its normal boot messages, or that the C5/C61 wireless firmware reports its expected startup. If the product uses both processors together, test the inter-processor link after validating each image separately.
Why does esptool say “Failed to connect”?
“Failed to connect” generally means esptool could not establish the ROM download-mode handshake. It is not proof that the flash contents are damaged. Work through the causes in this order.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Check the simple connection causes
- Confirm that the selected port appears and does not belong to another board or debug adapter.
- Try another known-good data cable and a direct USB connection.
- Close terminal programs, IDE monitors and background tools that may have opened the port.
- Use the connector specified for the P4 or wireless chip. The two USB-C ports may expose different functions.
- Check power and ground. If the board resets repeatedly or disappears during erase, suspect supply or cable problems before changing images.
- Use the baud rate and target options required by the vendor release. A very high baud rate can make marginal wiring fail; reduce it for diagnosis if the tool supports that option.
Understand automatic reset
Normally, esptool uses DTR and RTS control lines from a USB-to-UART bridge to reset the ESP32-P4 and select Firmware Download mode. If the WT32P4C5-43S connector does not route those lines, or routes them differently, the automatic sequence can fail even when the serial data path is healthy. Espressif’s ESP-IDF Programming Guide v5.5.5 notes: “Depending on the kind of hardware you have, it may also be possible to manually put your ESP32-P4 board into Firmware Download mode (reset).”
How do I enter ESP32-P4 ROM download mode manually?
Use GPIO35 only when the board exposes the required control
Espressif’s ESP32-P4 boot-mode guidance uses GPIO35 as the boot strap: hold GPIO35 low while resetting the chip, then keep it asserted through the reset sampling point. On Espressif development boards this is commonly represented by holding Boot (GPIO35) and pressing EN. That exact button sequence is not confirmed for the Wireless-Tag board, and its labels or routing may differ.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Identify the P4 Boot/GPIO35 and reset/EN controls from the current Wireless-Tag manual or schematic.
- Connect the programming interface for the P4, not the C5/C61 debug path.
- Assert GPIO35 low using the board’s documented Boot control.
- Reset the P4 using the documented EN/reset control while GPIO35 remains asserted.
- Keep GPIO35 low until the ROM has sampled it and esptool begins connecting; then release it if the manual says to do so.
- Retry the vendor command at a conservative baud rate and capture the ROM text.
Confirm the ROM log
A correctly selected download path should produce a boot log containing a download-mode label such as DOWNLOAD_BOOT(UART0/UART1/SDIO_REI_REO_V2) or DOWNLOAD(USB/UART0). If the log shows a normal boot instead, GPIO35 was not sampled low, the reset was applied to the wrong processor, or the selected interface is not connected to the P4 ROM. Correct the hardware path before retrying repeatedly.
Recover when the board enters ROM but will not boot
Interpret an “Invalid header” at 0x2000
Espressif describes this fatal condition as: “The bootloader tried to read the software bootloader header at address 0x2000 but failed to read valid data.” On the WT32P4C5-43S, treat that address as a diagnostic clue, not as permission to write a guessed image there.
- Missing or misplaced bootloader: the image may not contain the software bootloader expected at the documented address, or it may have been written elsewhere.
- Flash connection or power fault: unstable supply, a poor connection or a damaged flash device can make a correctly written image unreadable.
- Encryption mismatch: an encrypted bootloader cannot be treated as plaintext, and a plaintext image may not satisfy a device configured for encryption.
- Wrong target or release: a C5/C61 image, a different P4 board configuration or an incompatible partition table can produce a non-booting result even though writing completed.
Recovery sequence
- Capture the complete ROM and bootloader log, including the chip identification and the address reported in the error.
- Recheck that the log came from the processor you intended to repair.
- Compare your files and addresses with the current Wireless-Tag release for the board revision. Do not substitute offsets from another ESP32-P4 board.
- Verify whether the release is encrypted and whether the device security configuration expects encryption.
- Check cable, connector seating and power stability. If the chip can enter ROM but reads inconsistent data, hardware is a stronger suspect.
- Only after those checks, erase and reflash using the vendor’s complete image set and documented offsets. An erase removes potentially recoverable contents, so preserve logs and any needed data first.
- Reset without forcing download mode and verify that the P4 reaches its application boot messages.
Choosing between automatic and manual recovery
| Situation | Prefer | Reason | What confirms success |
|---|---|---|---|
| DTR/RTS reset is known to be wired and the correct port is selected | Automatic esptool reset | Fast and repeatable | Tool detects the expected chip and starts erase/write |
| esptool repeatedly reports “Failed to connect” but the serial port is present | Manual GPIO35-low ROM entry | Bypasses uncertain auto-reset wiring | ROM log contains a DOWNLOAD_BOOT or DOWNLOAD(USB/UART0) label |
| ROM connects but application does not boot | Log and image/offset diagnosis | Communication is working; boot content or security may be wrong | Valid bootloader header and normal application log |
| Many identical boards must be programmed | Validated Factory-mode profile | Repeatability after a single-board validation | Each unit passes target, write and verification checks |
When the Flash Download Tool is the better option
The GUI can be useful when a vendor release provides a ready-made configuration or when a technician needs visible per-file address fields. Select Develop mode for one chip at a time. Confirm the processor selection, image list, offsets, encryption options and communication port before starting. Factory mode is intended for production-style workflows, not for discovering an unknown board configuration. A GUI cannot compensate for a C5/C61 image selected for a P4 or for an offset copied from another board.

Common mistakes and their fixes
| Symptom | Likely mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No serial port | Charge-only cable, missing driver or unpowered board | Use a data cable, verify power and install the interface driver required by your operating system |
| “Failed to connect” immediately | Wrong connector, port in use or auto-reset not wired | Select the target path, close other serial tools and enter ROM mode manually |
| ROM log shows normal boot | GPIO35 was not low when reset was sampled | Follow the board-specific Boot/EN procedure and keep GPIO35 asserted through sampling |
| Write verifies but screen remains blank | P4 image, display configuration or offsets do not match the board | Use the revision-matched P4 release and inspect the application log; do not reflash the wireless image as a remedy |
| Wireless functions disappear after a P4 update | C5/C61 firmware was never updated or the inter-processor protocol versions differ | Check the companion firmware release and update the wireless processor through its own documented path |
| “Invalid header” at 0x2000 | Wrong/missing bootloader placement, flash read fault or encryption mismatch | Verify the complete image/offset/security configuration and hardware before erasing |
What is and is not a safe recovery assumption
- Entering ROM download mode is generally recoverable because it uses the chip’s built-in loader; it does not guarantee that a later application image is valid.
- A successful esptool connection proves the selected processor and interface responded. It does not prove that you selected the correct board image.
- The generic esptool example address is documentation syntax, not a WT32P4C5-43S offset.
- The P4 and C5/C61 have separate firmware roles and should be diagnosed independently.
- No board-specific recovery binary, factory-reset recipe, exact image filenames or verified offset table is established here. Obtain those details from the current Wireless-Tag manual and release for your revision.
Final preflight checklist
- Board revision recorded.
- Target identified as ESP32-P4 or ESP32-C5/C61.
- Correct USB/debug connector confirmed from the manual or silkscreen.
- Vendor image and complete address table matched to the revision.
- Encryption and security settings understood.
- Stable power and a known-good data cable connected.
- Existing logs and important data saved before an erase.
- ROM download mode confirmed when automatic connection fails.
- Post-flash boot log checked on the same processor that was programmed.
