Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a sleep meditation playlist, set the stream to Normal latency if you operate it: YouTube recommends this mode for non-interactive streams, and it offers the least viewer buffering. If you are watching and the video keeps pausing, that is a playback problem—not something you can fix by changing the stream’s latency setting.
First: identify delay or buffering
Latency is the time between a stream being captured or encoded and appearing for viewers. A broadcast can have a noticeable delay without interruptions. Buffering means playback pauses or stalls; it can happen even when the stream’s configured latency is unchanged. Lower latency reduces the time available to buffer video, so it can make interruptions more likely, especially when a connection is congested or inconsistent.

For a sleep meditation playlist, viewers usually do not need to interact with the broadcast in real time. That makes Normal latency the practical starting point for the operator. If you are a viewer, use the playback checks below; only the operator can change the stream’s latency mode.
If you are watching the playlist
- Work out which symptom you have. If the video plays smoothly but trails the live source, that is latency. If it pauses, stutters, or repeatedly buffers, troubleshoot playback.
- Try another connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if available, then replay the stream. This helps determine whether the current connection is contributing to the interruptions.
- Adjust playback quality. In the YouTube player, select a lower video quality and see whether playback becomes more stable.
- Check the app or device. If the problem continues, clear the YouTube app cache where that option is available, restart or update the app or device, and try the same stream on another supported device.
- Check whether it is broader than YouTube. If playback problems also affect other services, YouTube recommends consulting the device maker’s support.
These steps can help with your playback path; they do not change the creator’s stream latency mode or remove source-to-viewer delay.

If you operate the stream
Choose a latency mode for the stream’s purpose
In YouTube Studio, open the live stream in Live Control Room and inspect Stream latency in its settings. YouTube’s guidance is to use Normal latency for non-interactive streams. Use a lower-latency mode only when the stream’s interaction needs justify the buffering trade-off.
| Mode | Intended use | Typical delay stated by YouTube | Trade-off and support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams | No figure stated | Least viewer buffering; supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low | Limited interaction | Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds. | More buffering risk than Normal; does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation | Most viewers experience less than five seconds. | Higher buffering risk; does not support 4K. |
The delay figures are YouTube’s descriptions of typical viewer experience, not guaranteed limits for each viewer. Actual delay and interruptions can vary with network and playback conditions.

Check upload capacity and stream health
- Compare your available outbound upload capacity with the stream bitrate, allowing headroom for other network traffic rather than planning to use the entire connection.
- Use a reliable connection. Congestion or fluctuations can affect delivery even if the connection’s average capacity appears sufficient.
- Test the setup and preview the stream before going live.
- Monitor stream health while live so you can spot delivery problems instead of mistaking every delay for a latency-mode setting.
Account for the ingestion protocol if you control it
YouTube says HLS ingestion has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments. YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option is disabled when HLS is selected. If you use HLS, shorter segment duration can lower latency, subject to YouTube’s documented HLS requirements. Protocol and segment settings matter only if you control the encoder and ingestion setup.
