If YouTube warns, “Please correct the sample rate for audio in the stream to 44.1 KHz,” set your live stereo encoder output to 44.1 kHz. If you are streaming 5.1 surround, YouTube recommends 48 kHz instead. When primary and backup feeds are both configured, set them to the same sample rate. Test with representative audio and confirm the warning clears in Live Control Room before your event.
Identify which audio setting applies
The correct rate depends on the live stream’s channel format, not simply on whether the encoder offers a 48 kHz option. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations distinguish stereo from 5.1 surround sound.

| Stream configuration | YouTube live audio sample-rate recommendation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 44.1 kHz | Set the encoder’s outgoing audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz. |
| 5.1 surround | 48 kHz | Confirm that the stream is actually configured for 5.1. YouTube’s dedicated 5.1 guidance also specifies 384 Kbps; for 5.1 over RTMP, it supports AAC, while HLS supports AAC, AC3, and EAC3. |
These are YouTube’s live-stream recommendations; they are not interchangeable with settings for uploaded videos. YouTube recommends 48 kHz on its upload encoding settings page, but that upload guidance does not replace the 44.1 kHz recommendation for live stereo.

Fix the warning step by step
- Read the exact warning in YouTube. Find the Health Indicator in the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room and note the error text. YouTube says unresolved errors continue to appear. If the message asks for 44.1 kHz, first determine whether the stream is stereo or 5.1 before changing a setting. See Live streaming error messages.
- Change the encoder’s outgoing audio rate. For a stereo live stream, locate the audio sample-rate setting in the encoder and choose 44.1 kHz. The exact menu path varies by encoder, so look for the output or streaming audio setting rather than assuming a universal interface location. For 5.1, use YouTube’s 48 kHz recommendation instead.
- Match primary and backup feeds. If you have configured both, ensure each sends audio at the same sample rate. YouTube specifically identifies differing primary and backup audio sample rates as a problem.
- Test before the event. Run a pre-stream check using audio and movement similar to what you intend to broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live; it does not specify a universal minimum test duration.
- Verify in Live Control Room. Review the stream status and specific error messages, then monitor stream health while live. YouTube’s metrics guidance explains how to see your live stream’s metrics.
If the warning remains
After confirming the correct rate and matching any primary and backup feeds, check the encoder’s audio routing and selected input or device configuration. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not document app-specific hardware diagnostics, so the exact checks depend on your encoder and audio setup. The warning alone does not establish that you need to buy an audio interface or other hardware.
- Rate changed, but the warning persists: verify that the changed value applies to the outgoing stream, not just local recording or monitoring.
- Primary feed is correct, backup is not: set both feeds to the same rate, then test again.
- You are sending 5.1: confirm the channel format before applying the stereo warning’s 44.1 kHz value; YouTube recommends 48 kHz for live 5.1.
- You are using HLS: HLS has additional segment and transport requirements, but a sample-rate warning alone is not a reason to switch protocols. YouTube gives the same live audio sample-rate recommendations for HLS; see Set up an HLS stream.
