A YouTube stream that appears frozen does not automatically mean an older NVIDIA GPU or NVENC has failed. First check whether the freeze is visible in OBS’s local output, whether OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, whether frames are dropping on the connection to YouTube, or whether only viewers are buffering. Each points to a different fix.

Find where the stream is freezing before changing settings

Run a short test stream and check four things together: OBS’s preview, a local recording, OBS’s performance and connection statistics, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. The symptom on a viewer’s screen alone cannot identify the cause.

  1. Check OBS’s preview. If it visibly stalls or falls behind, look for a rendering or encoding performance problem.
  2. Check a local recording. If the recording is also choppy or frozen, the issue is occurring before YouTube playback. If the recording is healthy, continue checking the connection and YouTube’s ingest health.
  3. Read OBS’s counters. Distinguish rendering or encoding lag from network-dropped frames. Record the actual counters during the test rather than guessing from the picture.
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Note its stream-health warnings and whether the problem appears at ingest or only during viewer playback.

YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output and a local archive. If both look and sound healthy, it points creators toward the outbound internet connection. OBS also separates encoding performance problems, connection problems and viewer buffering; they are not interchangeable diagnoses.

If OBS shows rendering or encoding lag

NVENC handles video encoding, but it does not remove the GPU from the rest of OBS’s work. OBS still renders and composites scenes, and games or other GPU-heavy applications compete for capacity. OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide explains that OBS needs GPU time and resources to render and composite a scene. A capable encoder can therefore coexist with an overloaded graphics workload.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1b, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology, Dual BIOS
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Free GPU capacity first

  • Close GPU-heavy applications you recognize and do not need during the stream.
  • If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding game graphics settings.
  • Simplify OBS scenes and reduce or remove filters that add workload.
  • If the problem persists, reduce the output resolution or frame rate. OBS suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator; OBS lists this as a quick fix to try for GPU overload, not a guaranteed cure.

Change one category at a time and repeat a short test. That makes it easier to see whether a lower scene workload or output demand changes the OBS counters and local output.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects

Dropped frames point to the path between OBS and YouTube, not necessarily to NVENC. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Check the stability of your outbound connection and whether it can sustain the bitrate you have selected.

  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system
  • Compare OBS’s dropped-frame counter with YouTube’s stream-health warnings during the test.
  • Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently; a recommended ingest bitrate is not proof that your particular connection can support it.
  • If YouTube’s encoder output and a local recording are healthy but the stream still has connection trouble, test the outbound connection and contact your internet service provider if the connection is unstable.
  • OBS offers dynamic bitrate as a way to reduce bitrate during congestion. It may help keep a stream connected, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce quality.

Changing the NVENC generation will not repair an unstable connection. Keep connection drops separate from rendering or encoding lag when you test adjustments.

Check OBS’s YouTube ingest settings

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs, CBR (constant bitrate), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe frequency of two seconds that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube warns that a keyframe interval over four seconds can cause buffering. It recommends RTMPS and testing before going live while monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations and live streaming error messages for the current requirements.

For H.264, YouTube Help’s current settings page, accessed in 2026 (the access year, not a stated publication year), recommends these bitrates by resolution and frame rate:

Output YouTube H.264 recommendation
1080p60 17 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps
480p30 4 Mbps
360p30 4 Mbps

These are YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. YouTube lists different recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs. Match the codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate to the settings shown for the stream you intend to send, then test while watching stream health.

When an older NVIDIA GPU may be the limiting factor

OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide says NVIDIA NVENC is supported on GeForce GTX 750 Ti, 900-series (Maxwell) and newer GPUs. It recommends a GPU with 6th-generation NVENC (Turing) for best results and notes that GTX 1650 revision 1 has 5th-generation NVENC. Keep NVIDIA drivers current, as OBS advises.

Those compatibility and generation references do not guarantee that a GPU can handle every game, scene, resolution and frame rate. Consider an upgrade only if repeatable tests still show that your intended workload cannot be sustained after freeing GPU resources and reducing scene or output demands. Verify the exact GPU model and revision before making a purchase; the NVENC generation alone does not establish that an upgrade is necessary or will resolve the freeze.
