If YouTube will not change from 1×, keeps returning to normal speed, or no longer shows the speed control, start by checking the player on another video. On a supported desktop browser or mobile app, open the video, select Settings (the gear), choose Speed, and select a rate. If the setting is missing or will not stay selected, update YouTube, your browser, and device software; close and reopen the app or browser; restart the device; and test another browser, network, or supported device. Android users can also clear the YouTube app cache. Smart TVs and streaming devices may not offer playback-speed controls at all.
Use the speed control correctly first
On desktop and supported mobile playback, open the video and use the player controls rather than a keyboard shortcut or a temporary gesture. YouTube’s documented path is:

- Open a video.
- Select the player’s Settings gear.
- Select Speed.
- Choose the playback rate you want.
Play a few seconds after selecting the rate, then pause and resume. This distinguishes a control that never applied from one that applied briefly and was reset by a player event. If Speed is absent, do not assume the account is broken: availability depends on the device and playback environment.

Identify whether the problem is limited or widespread
Before changing settings, test the same action in a second video. This is the quickest way to separate a video-specific player problem from a browser, app, account, or device problem.

Only one video fails
If speed works normally on other videos, the failing video may have a content-specific or player-specific issue. Record its URL, the selected rate, and the action that causes the reset—for example, seeking, pausing, refreshing, entering full-screen mode, or navigating away. Continue using another video as a temporary workaround, but report the individual video if the behavior is reproducible.
Every video fails
If every video returns to 1× or the control is missing everywhere, continue with platform checks. Update the relevant software, restart the playback environment, and test an alternate browser, app, network, or supported device. A failure that follows you across those tests is more likely to require YouTube’s support channel than a local setting change.
Check platform support before troubleshooting
YouTube documents that playback speed may not be available on some smart TVs and streaming devices. A missing control on those platforms can therefore be a product limitation rather than a fault you can repair.

Refresh the software path
Playback speed is controlled by the YouTube player, the app or browser hosting it, and the device software underneath. A stale process or incompatible version can make a valid selection disappear or fail to persist. Apply these steps in order:
- Install any available YouTube app update.
- Update the desktop browser if you are watching in a browser.
- Install pending operating-system or device-firmware updates.
- Close and reopen the YouTube app or every browser window.
- Close unnecessary browser tabs, especially tabs playing media or using substantial memory.
- Restart the phone, computer, TV, or streaming device.
- Reopen YouTube, test a second video, and select Settings > Speed again.
Do not treat a restart as proof that the underlying issue is solved. Test the action that previously triggered the reset—such as a seek or refresh—after the restart.

Fix playback speed in a desktop browser
Confirm the browser is the variable
Open the same video in another supported browser. If the speed works there, the original browser’s state or compatibility is implicated. Update the affected browser, restart it, reduce open tabs, and repeat the test. If the problem remains isolated to one browser, include its name and version when reporting the problem instead of repeatedly changing unrelated device settings.
Test a clean playback context
Use a private window or a separate browser profile only as a diagnostic comparison. If speed works in that context but not your normal session, the difference is session state rather than the video itself. YouTube’s documented general troubleshooting steps emphasize restarting the browser, closing unnecessary tabs, and trying another browser or supported device. Keep the result of each comparison so you can describe a consistent pattern to support.

A Brave browser issue documented mobile-browser playback returning to 1× after a touch-and-hold gesture temporarily played a video at 2×. The same behavior was not observed in the YouTube app. That evidence supports a browser-specific explanation for some reset reports; it does not establish that every browser, video, or device has the same defect. If your reset occurs immediately after a particular gesture, note that trigger and switch to the app or another supported browser while waiting for a browser or YouTube fix.
Fix playback speed in the Android or iOS app
Android cache-clearing path
On Android, clear cached YouTube data without deleting the app:
- Open device Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select YouTube.
- Select Storage & cache.
- Select Clear cache.
- Reopen YouTube and test Settings > Speed on two videos.
Use Clear cache, not an option that removes app storage, unless you deliberately want to reset local app data and understand its effects. If clearing the cache changes nothing, proceed with app and device updates, a full restart, and an alternate playback environment.

iPhone and iPad checks

On iOS, use the supported steps that apply to every mobile platform: update YouTube and iOS, close and reopen the app, restart the device, and test the same account and video in a desktop browser or another supported device. This comparison shows whether the issue belongs to the iOS app session or follows the account and video.
When an Android incident may be involved
Android Authority reported on August 6, 2025, that YouTube had acknowledged an Android playback-speed-controls problem and was working on a fix. That is historical evidence of a real Android-side incident, not confirmation that the same incident is active now. If your symptoms match and current app updates do not help, capture the app version, Android version, device model, and exact reset behavior before contacting YouTube.
Separate connection quality from speed-control failures
YouTube’s troubleshooting material recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. The recommendation concerns the connection needed for HD playback; it does not establish that insufficient bandwidth causes the playback-speed setting to reset. A slow connection can cause buffering or quality changes, but do not label it the cause of a speed-control failure without testing.
To isolate the network, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or use another trusted network. If the control works on one connection but not another, include that result in your report. If speed resets identically on different networks, focus on the app, browser, device, account, or YouTube service rather than buying networking hardware.
Use a second device to distinguish local and service problems
Sign in to the same YouTube account on another supported device and test the same video plus a second video. Interpret the results as follows:

- The app fails but a browser works: treat the app version or app state as the primary lead.

What to do when the control disappears
On a computer or supported phone
Verify that you are using the normal YouTube player and not an embedded player or a device interface that omits advanced controls. Open another standard video, select the gear, and look specifically for Speed. If it is missing on all videos, update and restart the browser or app, then test another supported environment.
On a television or streamer
Do not keep searching through menus if the platform does not support speed adjustment. YouTube explicitly notes that some smart TVs and streaming devices lack the feature. Use a supported computer or mobile device for variable-speed playback, and report the model and software version if you believe the control should be available.

A reset that follows one action is more useful diagnostically than a random reset. Reproduce it once, then record:
- The action: refresh, seek, pause, resume, full-screen change, navigation, or touch-and-hold playback.
- The rate selected before the action.
- The rate shown afterward.
- Whether the same action resets a second video.
- Whether the reset occurs in the app, browser, or both.
For example, a touch-and-hold 2× gesture that returns to 1× only in a mobile browser points toward browser handling of that gesture. A rate that resets after every refresh on every device points toward a broader service or account-level problem. These are working classifications, not guarantees; confirm them with alternate environments.
Send a useful report to YouTube
If updates, restarts, cache clearing, alternate environments, and network tests do not resolve the issue, report it immediately after reproducing it. In YouTube, open your profile menu, choose Help and Feedback, then choose Send Feedback.
Include all details needed to reproduce the failure:
- Device make and model.
- Operating-system version.
- YouTube app version or browser name and version.
- The video URL, especially when only one video fails.
- The selected speed and the speed shown after the reset.
- The exact trigger: seek, pause, refresh, navigation, touch-and-hold, or another action.
- Whether the problem occurs on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both.
- Whether another browser, app, or supported device behaves differently.
A precise report is more actionable than “speed is broken.” Mention if the control is absent, if it appears but will not apply, or if it applies and then returns to 1×; those are distinct symptoms.

- Assuming 7 Mbps explains the reset: the HD figure concerns streaming quality, not proof of a speed-control cause.
- Changing hardware before checking support: a TV or streamer may simply omit playback-speed controls.
- Testing only one video: a single-video failure does not establish a device-wide fault.
- Clearing Android storage instead of cache: use the documented Clear cache path first.
- Reporting without versions or triggers: support needs the device, operating system, app or browser version, video URL, and action that causes the reset.
- Treating an old incident as current: the August 6, 2025 Android report shows that such bugs have occurred, but current status must be checked through present updates and testing.
Practical recovery sequence
When you need the shortest reliable sequence, follow this order:
- On a supported device, open a video and select Settings > Speed.
- Test a second video to establish scope.
- Update YouTube, the browser, and device software.
- Close and reopen the app or browser, close unnecessary tabs, and restart the device.
- On Android, clear YouTube’s cache through Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage & cache > Clear cache.
