A failing Ethernet cable can interrupt a YouTube live stream, but a dropout alone does not prove the cable is at fault. Reseat the connections, inspect the cable, then test with a known-good replacement. If the interruption continues, check the router or switch port, available upload capacity, shared network use, encoder health and viewer playback before replacing more equipment.
First identify what is dropping
Before changing anything, note when the problem occurs and which part of the connection appears affected. A computer may lose its wired network link; the encoder may report a sending error; YouTube may flag stream health; or viewers may report playback interruptions while your encoder and connection appear normal. Record any warning shown by the computer, router or switch, encoder, or YouTube Live Control Room, along with the time it appeared.

YouTube says a connectivity disruption can mean a broken stream. It recommends using an Ethernet connection when livestreaming from a computer, but a wired connection does not rule out a bad cable, port, congested shared network, or other fault. - Reseat both ends. Unplug and firmly reconnect the Ethernet cable at the computer and at the router or switch. Make sure each plug clicks into place and stays seated.
- Inspect the cable and plugs. Look for visible damage, sharp kinks, or a broken or loose retention clip. This is a practical physical check, not a YouTube-prescribed checklist. If the cable is visibly damaged, skip to a known-good replacement.
- Substitute a known-good cable. Use a cable with connectors compatible with the computer and router or switch, and long enough to reach without being stretched or pinched. Keep the rest of the setup the same, then observe whether the wired link and stream stabilize. If they do, the original cable is a strong suspect and should be replaced. If not, continue diagnosing rather than repeatedly buying cables.
- Try another available network port. If practical, connect the known-good cable to another available router or switch port. A change in behavior can help distinguish a cable fault from a port fault; it does not by itself identify every possible network problem.
- Check the live stream under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream and monitoring stream health and messages. If a basic RJ45 Ethernet cable tester is available, it may help identify a cable fault. It is optional: a tester does not establish that your internet connection has sufficient outbound capacity or that the stream remains stable under real conditions.

Check upload capacity against the encoder bitrate
A speed test’s download result does not tell you whether the connection can reliably send a live stream. Run an internet speed test that reports upload speed while connected by Ethernet, ideally at a time and under household or venue network conditions resembling the stream. One result is only a snapshot: shared network traffic can reduce the capacity available to your stream.
YouTube says the total bitrate of the stream must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Compare sustainable outbound capacity—not just a best-case test result—with the encoder’s total configured bitrate. Include a backup stream if you use one. Other uploads or network users can consume the remaining capacity, so an otherwise suitable connection may still become unstable when it is busy. YouTube Help: Streaming tips

YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube Help recommendations for encoder bitrate, not guarantees of the internet plan a viewer needs or universal minimum upload speeds. Match the row to the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually selected in your encoder, then allow for YouTube’s recommended upload headroom.

Separate a network fault from an encoder or viewer problem
Once you have tested the cable and checked upload capacity, use the encoder preview, stream-health messages, and reports from viewers to narrow down what remains. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance describes these clues as ways to investigate; none should be treated as a diagnosis from a single observation. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
- Encoder preview looks and sounds healthy, but sending or connection warnings appear: investigate the outbound network path. YouTube recommends testing outbound internet and contacting your ISP if testing indicates a connection problem.
- Encoder reports errors, or computer CPU load is high: investigate encoder settings and computer load as well as the network. A cable swap cannot resolve an encoder-side problem.
- One viewer reports trouble: their own computer or connection may be involved. Ask whether other viewers on different connections can watch normally before changing your setup.
- Several viewers on different connections report the same playback issue: an encoder-side problem may be more likely than a problem limited to one viewer’s connection. Check encoder errors and YouTube stream health before concluding that the network is responsible.
Choose the next fix based on what the tests show
- The stream stabilizes with another cable: replace the suspect cable with a compatible Ethernet patch cable of suitable length. No particular brand, cable category, or model is established as necessary here.
- The cable change makes no difference, but another router or switch port does: the original port is a stronger suspect. Check the network hardware or ask the person who manages it to investigate.
- Upload capacity is inconsistent or too close to the stream’s total bitrate: reduce competing network traffic where possible, or ask your ISP whether the service and connection are providing reliable outbound capacity. - Network checks look sound, but the encoder reports errors or overload: investigate the encoder configuration and computer performance instead of buying another cable.
- Only one viewer has trouble: have that viewer check their connection and playback device; do not assume your stream is dropping for everyone.
