First identify where the failure occurs: an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console, or a Windows PC using the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. A console message such as “Installation stopped” needs a model- and code-specific Xbox Support article; PC steps should not be copied to a console. On Windows, record the complete message and any 0x… code, then work through account, eligibility, updates, storage, and app-repair checks in that order.
The sequence below starts with reversible checks and reserves Gaming Services package removal for the specific Windows errors it addresses.

Start with the platform and exact symptom
Before changing anything, write down the device, app, game, and full error text. “Xbox game won’t install,” a download that never starts, a progress bar stuck at a percentage, “Installation stopped,” and a Gaming Services prompt can have different causes.

| Where you are installing | What to record | Use this guide |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Xbox app | Windows version, game, target drive, percentage or message, and any 0x… code |
Follow the Windows flow below |
| Windows Microsoft Store | The Store error text, account in use, and whether other Store apps install | Use the Store checks and reset steps below |
| Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S | Console generation, exact wording, code, and whether the title is digital or disc-based | Use the current Xbox Support article for that generation and code; do not apply the PC procedure |
For a Windows code, search the exact code in Xbox Support rather than guessing from the digits. Codes generally begin with 0x; changing settings without matching the code can make diagnosis harder. Microsoft’s Store guidance also recommends checking whether the app is still listed and whether the device is authorized: Microsoft’s “I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store” guide.

Windows: the safe troubleshooting order
Try one change at a time and retry the installation after each stage. This preserves the evidence in the original error and avoids deleting partial downloads unnecessarily.
1. Check account, Game Pass entitlement, and connection
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used by the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. If the two apps show different accounts, sign out and sign back in with the account that owns the game or subscription.
- For a Game Pass title, confirm that the relevant plan is active and that Windows is online. An expired plan or an offline PC can remove the install option or stop validation.
- If the game cannot be found, the Install button is missing, or the title appears unavailable, check Microsoft’s listed conditions: regional availability, family settings, device compatibility, an app that has been removed from the Store, a device that still needs authorization, or an update that requires a restart. The conditions and remedies are summarized in Microsoft’s Store availability guidance.
Do not buy additional storage or reinstall Windows until you have confirmed that the account is entitled to the game and the title is available for that device.
2. Close the app, update Windows and Store components, then restart
- Close the Xbox app and Microsoft Store completely, then open the app you used for the install again.
- Install available Windows updates. In Microsoft Store, open its update or library area and install pending app updates.
- If Windows installed an update recently, restart the PC before retrying. Microsoft lists closing and reopening the Store, updating Windows and Store apps, and restarting as early fixes for Store installation problems; see Microsoft’s app troubleshooting steps.
- Open the game’s details page and try the installation once. If the download had stopped during a Game Pass installation, a restart can leave usable partial data; starting again from the details page may resume rather than begin from zero, as described in Microsoft Flight Simulator’s Xbox app installation guide.
Avoid repeatedly cancelling, deleting folders, or running administrator scripts at this stage. Those actions can remove partial data without fixing the account, update, or service problem that caused the failure.

A game can fail even when the download size appears small because installation also needs working space. Check the free capacity of the drive selected in the Xbox app and leave enough room for the game and its installation process. If the drive is nearly full, clear space or select another drive that is already available.

When Windows says the selected drive is not set up for game installations, change the Windows destination:
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Storage.
- Open Change where new content is saved.
- Under New apps will be saved to, select the drive you want to use.
- Return to the Xbox app and select that drive for the game, then retry.
The wording can vary slightly between Windows releases, but the relevant setting is the destination for new apps, not merely the location of your personal Documents folder. An additional hard drive is useful only when you have confirmed a capacity or destination problem; changing drives is not a general cure for account, Store, or Gaming Services errors. If you already have a suitable drive, configuring it may solve the issue without buying hardware.
4. Reset the Microsoft Store cache when Store behavior is abnormal
Use this step when the Microsoft Store will not load correctly, updates do not appear, or a Store-based install fails without a useful code. Microsoft’s reset procedure is:
- Press Windows + R to open Run.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- Wait while the blank command window closes and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- Retry the game installation.
The reset does not select a game drive or add an entitlement; it clears Store cache behavior. For continuing Store problems, Microsoft also documents checking for app updates and using an app’s Repair, Reset, or reinstall option where Windows offers it: Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.

5. Repair Gaming Services only when the message points to it
If the Xbox app explicitly says Gaming Services is required, or the installation fails with a Gaming Services-related code, use the Gaming Services Repair Tool provided through the Xbox support flow. This is preferable to copying registry or PowerShell commands from an unofficial forum.
A Microsoft Flight Simulator support article documented that the PC Xbox app needed version 2311.1001.7.0 or newer to run that repair tool at the time of its instructions. That is a historical minimum from the article, not a promise that it remains the current requirement; update the Xbox app and confirm the tool’s current requirement before relying on a version-specific instruction. The same article explains the tool and the surrounding installation checks: Xbox app game-installation troubleshooting.
Run the tool, restart Windows if it requests one, and retry from the game’s details page. If the tool is unavailable, first update the Xbox app and Store, then repeat the account, connection, and storage checks. Do not remove Gaming Services packages manually merely because a download is slow or stuck at a percentage.

6. Reserve the old package-removal workaround for matching errors
Microsoft documents a narrow Windows 10 failure in which installing or starting an Xbox Game Pass game redirects the user to the Microsoft Store page for Gaming Services. The support article addresses error codes 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F and describes removing Gaming Services packages, restarting the device, and reinstalling Gaming Services through the Xbox app. Microsoft states:

“When you try to install or start an Xbox Game Pass game on your Windows 10 device, you may be redirected to the Microsoft Store page for Gaming Services.”
That procedure is from Microsoft’s 2021 Windows 10 article, KB5004327. Use it only if your code and symptom match the article and after the current repair options have failed. It is technical, changes system packages, and is not a generic fix for every Xbox download problem. Follow the article’s current instructions exactly rather than adapting a command from another version of Windows.
Match the action to the failure point
| Symptom | Most relevant checks | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Game is missing or Install is unavailable | Account, Game Pass status, online connection, region, family settings, device compatibility, Store listing, and device authorization | The title remains unavailable after confirming the account and eligibility; use the exact Store or Xbox Support guidance |
| Download never starts | Close and reopen the app, install Windows and Store updates, restart, then retry | Other Store apps also fail or a specific code appears; search that code instead of repeating retries |
| Download stops at a percentage | Check free space and target drive, restart, and retry from the game details page | The drive is healthy and spacious but the same code returns |
| Windows says the drive is not configured for games | Set New apps will be saved to under Settings > System > Storage, then select that drive in Xbox | The drive does not appear or Windows reports a separate storage error |
| “Gaming Services needs to be installed” or related code | Update Xbox and Store, run the Gaming Services Repair Tool, and restart if prompted | The precise codes are 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F; consult KB5004327’s narrow workaround |
| Console shows “Installation stopped” | Record the console generation and exact code | Use the current Xbox Support article for that console and code; do not use Windows cache or Gaming Services steps |
When the Xbox app and Microsoft Store disagree
Windows games can involve both the Xbox app and Microsoft Store. The Xbox app may show the game while Store components handle licensing or Gaming Services. Sign in to the same Microsoft account in both applications, update both, and retry from the app where the title was originally selected. If one app shows an install button and the other reports that the game is unavailable, treat that as an account, eligibility, Store-listing, or authorization problem before assuming the files are corrupt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the Store itself cannot install unrelated apps, follow the Store troubleshooting path first. If ordinary Store apps work but one Xbox title fails, concentrate on the game’s entitlement, Game Pass status, target drive, and any Xbox-specific code.

Console installs: keep the guidance model-specific
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S installations use a different troubleshooting path from Windows. The exact menu names, storage behavior, and recovery options depend on the console generation and the error code. The available console help pages for preparing games and paused or stopped downloads are presented through a JavaScript interface, so a generic button sequence cannot be verified here.
For a console failure:
- Capture the complete message, code, game title, and console model.
- Check the current Xbox service status if official support identifies a service-side incident; a server problem can look like a local installation failure.
- Open the current Xbox Support article that matches your generation and exact code.
- Follow that article’s storage, update, disc, or network instructions rather than importing Windows steps such as
wsreset.exeor Gaming Services repair.
Do not assume that a PC hard drive, a console expansion product, or a factory reset is compatible or necessary. Compatibility and reset requirements must come from the support article for your specific console.
What not to do first
- Do not guess from an error number. Similar-looking codes can refer to different services or Windows versions.
- Do not repeatedly cancel and restart. A restart from the game details page may preserve partial data; repeated cancellations can discard it.
- Do not delete Xbox or Windows folders at random. Manual deletion can create a second permissions or licensing problem.
- Do not run registry or PowerShell fixes copied from an unrelated post. Use the current Microsoft procedure that matches your exact code.
- Do not purchase storage before checking the destination setting. A correctly configured existing drive may provide enough capacity.
- Do not apply PC instructions to a console. The platforms have separate services and recovery procedures.
A concise Windows checklist
- Identify Xbox app versus Microsoft Store, record the exact wording and
0x…code, and note the game, Windows version, and target drive. - Confirm the Microsoft account, Game Pass plan if applicable, online connection, region and family eligibility, device compatibility, and authorization.
- Close and reopen the app; install Windows and Store updates; restart Windows.
- Check free space and set the correct destination under Settings > System > Storage > Change where new content is saved.
- Retry from the game details page so any usable partial download can resume.
- For Store-specific trouble, run
wsreset.exe, then use Microsoft’s app Repair, Reset, or reinstall option if offered. - For a Gaming Services message, update Xbox and run the Gaming Services Repair Tool.
- Only for matching Windows 10 codes
0x80073D26or0x8007139F, follow the technical KB5004327 procedure. - If the failure is on a console, stop and switch to the current Xbox Support article for the exact model and code.
When to seek support
Escalate with the exact code and the steps already attempted when the same failure survives account, update, storage, and matched repair checks. Include whether other Microsoft Store apps install, which drive is selected, whether the game is a Game Pass title, and whether the failure is in the Xbox app or Store. Those details let support distinguish entitlement, Store, storage, and Gaming Services cases without repeating unrelated fixes.
