If your Xbox disc does not trigger a digital-license prompt, first check whether the console and disc qualify. The feature is for eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs on supported Xbox consoles with an optical disc drive; Xbox 360 and original Xbox game discs are excluded. A missing prompt does not, by itself, show that the console or disc needs repair.
Check the requirements before troubleshooting
Xbox’s disc-to-digital procedure is a way to claim a digital license for an eligible physical game disc. It is not a general conversion for every Xbox game disc, and it does not remove the requirement to keep the qualifying disc.

- Console: Use a supported Xbox console with an optical disc drive. A disc-free console cannot read a disc or carry out this claim procedure.
- Disc generation: The feature covers eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Xbox 360 and original Xbox game discs do not qualify for disc-to-digital licensing. A backward-compatible disc that plays on a console is not therefore eligible for this separate licensing feature.
- Market: Xbox says availability is limited to select markets.
Microsoft’s eligibility rules allow technical, licensing, publishing, and other factors to affect whether a particular disc qualifies; the eligible set can change. Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement said most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but that does not guarantee that a particular title or copy will qualify.
Try the official claim procedure
- Sign in to the Xbox account you intend to use.
- Insert the eligible-generation game disc into the console’s optical drive.
- Launch the game and look for Xbox’s prompt to accept a digital license. Xbox identifies this prompt as the indication that the disc is supported.
- If the prompt appears, follow it to accept the license. Keep the qualifying disc: Microsoft’s terms condition access on continued possession and permit eligibility revalidation.
If there is no digital-license prompt
Work through the checks in order rather than assuming that a reset or repair will make an unsupported disc eligible.

1. Confirm the console can read discs
Check the exact console model and whether it has an optical drive. If it has no drive, this claim method is unavailable on that console. If it does have a drive, the existence of the drive establishes only that the hardware can read discs; it does not establish that this game disc is eligible.
2. Check the disc generation
If the disc is for an original Xbox or Xbox 360 game, it is outside the disc-to-digital feature. Backward compatibility, where available, concerns whether a game can be played; it does not turn an excluded disc into a qualifying digital-license claim.

3. Sign in, insert the disc, and launch the game
Use the procedure above to check for the license prompt. The prompt is Xbox’s stated eligibility check; a disc merely appearing in the console or being playable is not the same confirmation.
4. Treat a missing prompt as an eligibility question first
Because Microsoft says eligibility varies and may change, the title or specific disc may not qualify. The official rules do not establish a generic reset, reinstall, or disc-cleaning step that can make an ineligible disc qualify. Do not replace a drive or buy repair parts solely to address an absent prompt: hardware cannot resolve a licensing or publishing exclusion.

How to assess a displayed error
The error text or code matters. Xbox’s published feature explanation and Microsoft’s digital-goods terms establish the requirements and eligibility conditions, but they do not provide a code-by-code repair procedure for every disc-to-digital error. Record the exact message, along with the console model, whether it has a disc drive, the disc’s game generation, and whether the license prompt appeared. Those details distinguish a prerequisite or eligibility issue from a fault that may need a specific remedy.
If Xbox accepts the license, its Play Anywhere and cloud gaming benefits apply only to titles for which those services are supported. A disc-to-digital license should not be taken as a promise that every converted game works on every device or through every service.

What the license does—and does not—mean
The digital entitlement remains tied to the qualifying physical disc. Microsoft says it may revalidate eligibility, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the disc. Claiming the digital license therefore does not make the game independent of the qualifying copy.
